Five Lessons from the West Brom Defeat

|

1) Raul Meireles is not a left winger – It was quite apparent from Liverpool’s first half performance that the team lacked balance. With Suarez and Carroll playing up front together, Dirk Kuyt was asked to play from the right with Jay Spearing and Lucas Leiva anchoring the midfield. It left Kenny Dalglish picking Raul Meireles on the left hand side for the second match in a row, and although the intention must have been for him to drift in field and have a free role, he was completely isolated out of position. He played a lot better in the second half when playing in his most natural position of attacking midfield after the Reds switched to 4-3-3 but it must be said that if the Reds are to play 4-4-2 in future, Meireles must either play in central midfield or not at all for he has been completely ineffective on either flank.

2) We need wingers, or otherwise we will turn into Stoke – When asked about the need to support Andy Carroll, Kenny Dalglish replied:

“Andy is part of our team, so is Luis Suarez so we need to get players who complement them. Whatever we need we will go for.”

The suggestion being that wingers will be needed to get the best out of the pairing in the summer. From the West Brom display, it is something that need’s sorting fast as the only supply Andy Carroll is getting at the moment is long balls hoofed up from the likes of Jamie Carragher at the back. When you have Roy Hodgson suggesting after the match that the Reds needed midfielders to support Carroll at the knockdowns from hoof balls, you know you are doing something wrong.

3) We need another centre half to replace Kyrgiakos and cover for Agger – It was head banging against the wall time again when Agger was yet again subbed because of an injury. A man made of glass rather than steel, the Dane is no doubt our most able defender on the ball and his passing range was sorely missed when he had to go off. His replacement Kyrgiakos, although mighty in the air, lacks any real pace, and alongside an equally slow Skrtel, it was no surprise to me that the Reds gave away two penalties. Soto was easily turned for the first penalty and he failed to deal with a long ball for the second. A capable footballing centre half is now an essential summer purchase along with another full back.

Adam morgan needs to be fast tracked into the first team.He offers us a robbie fowler type player. We need as many of these youth players as possible for next season.Dalglish is not the genius level manager needed. We need change.Dalglish is old and stays with what he knows. He has no history of youth development.Kuyt,Cole,Poulsen,Maxi,Konchesky.How have we collected such useless s**t.We need a managerial innovator, someone like Andres Villas Boas of Porto.Ferguson and Mourinho operate on mind control techniques with players. We need this type of manager. We are currently being linked with Sylvain Marveaux who is being classed as a winger but once again we will find he plays in the hole behind the striker. It never stops at anfield.THE CLUB WILL FIND A WAY TO F**K UP THESE GREAT YOUTH PLAYERS WE NOW HAVE.

  • Fivelamps says:

Dalglish is the right man for this job he didn’t create the situation we are in – Dalglish after all has been the most closely involved with the youth set up so ‘Kenny’ poster above don’t go speaking through the tube attached to your backside – still games to go this season then sort things out

  • nigel says:

king kenny is a motivator. He isnt a tactical manager- but thats why clarke was brought in. I agree that 4.4.2 is not for us with the squad we have. 4.3.3 or 3.5.2 when kelly and johnson are fit. This season could not end soon enough. Dire again. Its painful to watch. We should be brushing these teams aside. It shows the lack of quality in the squad. The only players that should remain in the first 11 are reina, carra, gerrard, suarez and carroll. Thats it. Meireles, lucas, pacheco, kelly, wilson, kuyt, bench. Players that are dragging us down and are a waste of money and should be moved on are brad jones (why?!), agger(always injured), aurelio(always injured), skrtel(poor composure and gives away fk’s), degen (why?!), insua, darby, koncheskey (why?! ), el zhar, aquilani, poulsen, spearing, ngog, jovanovic. Enough is enough. Too many poor, inconsistent players are dragging us down. Look at it this way. How many of our players would the other top teams want in their squads? Reina, suarez, gerrard when fit, carroll. Thats it. So fed up. Poor player recruitment over time. ive banged on for too long now. We need players like lucas from sao paulo, moussa sissoko. M’vila. Hazard. Sanchez. Lukaku. Wickham. Sakho. Hummels. Aly cissoko. Coentrao. Shaqiri. Jovetic. Etc etc wont get any of them prob. We will end up with wendt- a player who newcastle also want. Says it all. And marveaux- no other big team are going for him. Says it all.

  • Kenny says:

In response to five lamps,we will not have any money in the summer so the manager will have to bring through youth. Can you see Dalglish doing this?He bottled it against Sparta. The fire in Dalglish went out after Hillsborough. We need a manager obsessed with winning. He doesnt have it.Are you another Fan who loves Kuyts workrate but bemoans his total lack of skill. The only solution is the youth with great coaching.Im probably asking too much.Intelligence at Liverpool???That will be the day. PS what kind of name is five lamps?

  • Fivelamps says:

In response to “Kenny” sonny jim you really don’t know what you are talking about – there will be plenty of money available in the summer as Fenway look to invest lets look where we are at the end of the season and how the team perform – actually my name derives from the part of Liverpool I’m from which is in all probability more than can be said for you

  • Kenny says:

In response to five lamps so you are saying to any fan not from the city that they have no right to express an opinion. You are also wrong about NESV any dealings in the summer will be costneutral like January.

  • Fivelamps says:

Claptrap – any true fan from anywhere is welcome to make informed points but not to slag an LFC legend off

    • Jeff Jeff says:

well said. “kenny” ironically seems to be making ill informed assumptions about FSG (not NESV) and any Liverpool fan can only be pleased with the job Dalglish has done since he has come in. He has ensured a vital sense of harmony and positivity within the squad and it is clear the players on the pitch play for him! As fivelamps says, wait until the end of the season before badmouthing a legend and making ridiculous comments about the spending ability of the new owners.

  • Kenny says:

In response to five lamps according to Dalglish himself no one is bigger than the club.Does that include him?Maybe Hodgson was right, the squad is crap.Including your beloved old men Carragher and Gerrard. Why is spearing so useless?Dalglish is a man trading on achievements from decades ago.Why dont we bring back Ronnie Moran? He is only slightly less irrevelent than Dalglish.Five lamps why does your hero keep picking s**t like Cole,Kuyt,Maxi,Poulsen?I forgot. The King cant be criticed.

  • Kenny says:

In response to jeffjeff if you think 20 points out of 33 is anything special then you are wrong. NESV will only do costneutral transfer dealings in the summer because it is the sensible thing to do and they will want the new manager to bring through the likes of Flanagan,Robinson,Wisdom,Ngoo,Coady,Sterling,Suso,Amoo,Ecclesston and Morgan. For this club to progress a clearout of around 19 players is needed in the summer because they are deadwood.

  • Yunus says:

Once again we were disappointing beaten by a relegation candidate team , it seems we only good enough to beat the likes of Chelski & the scum etc. Our so called motivator Carra has a nerve to tell us we still have a chance to make 5th spot echoed by Spearing .Have we now as Liverpool accepted that 5th spot is become the target and winning the league is no longer in the radar, this is not the Shankly and Paisley way.We should begin at getting rid of Carra and Spearing first then start with the mediocre we have others.

    • gharib says:

I think kenny is wright about Daglish, in additional he is only a short term manager not to be installed as a permanent manager as he is old,was out of the game 4 so long and even the way we play is not encouraging, lack of concistence.
for the long term apointment and 4 the future of the club liverpool need manager as ANDRE VILLAS BOAS,DESCHAMPS OR DORTMUND MANAGER.

  • Pedro says:

West Brom was disappointing. Without Kelly and Agger, our defence is poor. Carra has been past it for a while, Soto is only effective when we play head volleyball and Skrtel is not first team material. However, unlike what many are suggesting, we don’t need to break the bank for a new CB. Just play Kelly alongside Agger with Ayala, Skrtel and Wilson deputising. We have 3 highly rated young CBs in Kelly, Ayala and Wilson. Get rid of Johnson and buy two full backs (RB and LB). That will sort our defence.

  • Altinkaya says:

Etherington and Pennant would be 2 quality additions.

  • Fivelamps says:

I am astounded at the ill informed comments from some of the above posters including ‘Kenny’ again (Jeff Jeff and Pedro honourable exceptions) – I’m not defending either Carragher or Gerrard or Kuyt for that matter but understand the ‘Liverpool Way’ if it becomes just another sporting franchise I don’t want to be part of it – If on the other hand it honours its roots and uses the skill expertise and passion at its disposal (Mr K Dalglish) then all will be well – as for most of you PLEASE STICK TO PLAYING FOOTBALL MANAGER ON YOUR PC I am quite exasperated at such a show of idiocy really

    • Kenny says:

Five Lamps: stop living in the past. Liverpool need to be ruthless in order to get back on top in English and European football. Dalglish has made no effort to bring through the youth players like Coady,Wisdom and Ngoo. Kelly was brought through by Benitez and Hodgson, Wilson and Shelvey were brought through by Hodgson. Spearing is a waste of space. Dalglish is still being dictated to by the likes of Carragher and Gerrard instead of calling the shots himself. Forget this Liverpool legend bull, Dalglish or any other so called Liverpool legend cannot be allowed to block the club moving forward. The youth policy is the key to moving this club forward not spending tens of millions more on substandard signings in the summer.

  • Fivelamps says:

“Kenny” you know nothing – your remarks are an insult to any true Liverpool supporter it’s people like you who have no understanding of the culture values and history of the club and city (wherever you are from)I’m not prepared to wave a plastic flag or acquiesce to your vision of some rampant souless money hungry sports concession – the mix is in fact right and youth will get its chance Dalglish deserves his chance – Carragher and Gerrard will soon (one way or another) be history – if it’s not right for Dalglish he’ll walk anyway – your knee jerk reactions and your glory hunting need for some glossy name from the UEFA sports book does not adequately cover any of the bases and to use a old scouse term you are a complete divot

    • Kenny says:

In reply to fivelamps: how can you say the mix is right. 45 points out of 93 is that acceptable? Before you say it is all Hodgson’s fault, who was managing West Brom on Saturday? Hodgson was right about one thing, the squad is rubbish. Dalglish had his chance and has blown it, instead of concentrating on crap like the Europa League he should have been going all out to win the 18 league games he will be in charge for, that would have put the club on 79 points on May 22 which would have guaranteed at least 2nd place. How many league titles and Champions Leagues do you want to see United winning before your oldfashioned views of football finally begin to look incorrect in the modern world of topflight football. Youth will not get any chance under Dalglish, he has never done it before.

  • Fivelamps says:

Oh “Kenny” so it’s all Dalglish’s fault eh? He prepared the team in the first part of the season didn’t he? Ooops oh no he did’nt…And yes you are correct points gained ratio under Dalglish extrapolated over a season would put LFC 2nd (UNDER DALGLISH) The West Brom defeat only serves to show that injuries caused the game plan to be lost plus lousy refeering – the youth set up is without doubt good and there will be chances aplenty in the next couple of seasons – but don’t suggest the likes of Morgan should be slotted he just isn’t ready – you obviously don’t have much history yourself or you’d realise that the smart move is to use everything at your disposal – Fenway are smart and you are just young and inexperienced – LFC is quite unique and if all you are is a knee jerk glory hunter go and support Chelsea – you’ll fit in much much better – like I said before judge at the end of the season not now

    • Kenny says:

FiveLamps: I have been a LFC fan since the FA Cup Final of 1977 so I have seen some of the greatest LFC teams and some of the worst in that time. As I said the 18 league games from January should have been prioritized instead of crap like the Europa League. So you are satisfied with losing to Blackpool,West Ham,West Brom and drawing with Wigan and Everton. You do not get the point about the youth system, Morgan,Ngoo,Wisdom,Coady,Flanagan,Robinson should all be given serious game time in these remaining 7 Premier League games in order to have them blooded to use in the Premier League from the start next season. Champions League football is out of reach this season and qualifying for the Europa League should not be bothered with as it is a mickeymouse competition and has a negative effect on the club’s Premier League games. The results of these remaining 7 games are not important therefore these games should be used totally to blood these youth players mentioned above. With no European football next season a smaller squad would suffice next season so 23 players should be sold in the summer and 9 players signed.

    • Kenny says:

Fivelamps: The day before the youth cup game against Man Utd Dalglish issued the shocking pronouncement that results are not everything at youth level. This was a day before the game so as a result it was no surprise that our players on hearing their hero’s advice subsequently felt that winning the game against United was irrevelant. Dalglish as we have said has no history of youth development unlike Ferguson and does not understand the only thing that matters for young players is to develop the culture of winning from the moment they begin kicking a football. As a result for years Liverpool have totally ignored this absolutely essential ingredient. After all Bob Paisley said that winning is about 90% pespiration and 10% inspiration. Eric Harrison the youth coach at Man Utd who brought through Scholes, Beckham,Giggs,Butt and the Nevilles told those players that they must win every game at youth level to breed the obsession with winning. So Dalglish still it seems does not understand the pyschology of this. PS the two penalties at West Brom were penalties and did you object to the non penalty Kuyt scored at Sunderland. PS over a whole season Dalglish’s percentages would have translated up to now to 56 points, that would have put LFC 10 points behind United with no chance of winning the Premiership so what is to shout about in your point?
