Monday’s victory against Manchester City showed beyond all doubt that this Liverpool team can perform when the occasion demands it. (Team sheet below). The biggest problem the Reds have had all season though, is consistency. A major part of our inconsistent performances is the inability to replicate the same intensity in our displays away from home as at Anfield. There have been exceptions to this rule, most notably against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and hopefully the Reds will go into the match at the Emirates with the same work ethic, energy and organisation as they did on Monday night.
Of course that is easier said than done against an Arsenal still very capable of playing any team, bar Barcelona, off the park. It is even more crucial then that the Reds replicate the same intensity in their performance as against City for we will need to get in the Arsenal players’ face and make life uncomfortable for them on the ball. If we allow them to get into their stride, and dominate possession, it will only be a matter of time before they score.

To avert such a scenario, two elements must be similar to the display to the City one on Monday night. Firstly both Lucas Leiva and Jay Spearing must have blinders or otherwise the Gunners’ five man midfield will overrun our defensive lines. Discipline is key from Jay and Lucas, and ensuring the backline is protected is a top priority. Any dip in performance, especially of the likes that Jay suffered against West Brom the week before last, will only lead to one thing; an Arsenal victory.
Secondly, the support to Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez has to be top notch. Without service the big Geordie will not be able to bulldoze through the fragile Arsenal defence, and Suarez will not be able to weave his magic around the opposition penalty area. Service will only be provided if we can control the ball in key areas in midfield, or otherwise the inevitable aimless long ball hoof from Jamie Carragher will kick in, and all is lost. Kuyt, Meireles, Lucas and Spearing will need to be at their imperious best to not be out-passed and outgunned by the Arsenal midfield five.

I have no doubt that the affair will be tightly contested, but it is critical that we don’t get pinned back in our own half for long stretches without the ball. It will put pressure on a defence struggling with injuries as at is and it will leave no chance of victory. Disrupting Arsenal’s flow is crucial and making the most of the ball while in possession will be equally important. Prediction: Arsenal 0 – 1 Liverpool.
