Is it really a “Catch 22” Situation for any Liverpool fan?

|

Paul Merson has talked about the Catch 22 situation that Reds fans may find themselves going in to the Arsenal/Liverpool match on Sunday afternoon. He told Sky Sports:

“The Liverpool fans will be in a bit of a Catch-22 situation at the Emirates. They don’t want to see their team lose, but they know that if they get a result – any result – they will be helping Manchester United to win a 19th league title. If Arsenal fail to win this game I think it’s all over as far as that’s concerned. It won’t be an issue for the players, they’ll want to go out and win, but the fans will find it hard to let go of that big rivalry.”

The question I would like to ask fellow Liverpool fans, would any of you not mind losing if it meant Manchester United didn’t lift their nineteenth league title? The rivalry between United and Liverpool has always been very fierce, but like when we went into the match against Chelsea last season, I still whole heartedly wanted Liverpool to win the match. I was apoplectic when Steven Gerrard gave away the first goal to the Blues, and wasn’t in a good mood after the match despite the consolation that Chelsea would then prevent United from winning the title.

From my point of view, I see no Catch 22 situation at all, I would like to see any other team than United win the title, but it doesn’t follow that I wouldn’t mind losing to Arsenal to make it happen. Although prospects of a Champions League place are very remote, we must go to the Emirates with the hope of getting a victory from the match to improve our own league position, rather than worrying what is happening up the M62.

No way lets beat Arsenal, thats the Liverpool way.

  • RedNProud says:

It’s a stupid question, when did Liverpool start worrying about other teams?

As Kenny has said our only concern is to get the maximum number of points by the end of the season and then we will see where we are.

Good to see some fans still have some pride – I honestly don’t care if Man U win the title this year. Hopefully that will motivate Liverpool to kick on and win the title back, instead of contenting ourselves with a challenge for 4th yet again!

Liverpool has to thump Arsenal so they go out and win against Spurs on Wednesday.
Liverpool has a responsibility to play well and win titles in their own right than take preventive measures to stop other teams from winning titles. Records are set to be broken and it would be sweet when Liverpool breaks a new United record on the way to 20 titles within the next couple of years rather than the 20 years it has taken united to break the Liverpool record.

King Kenny will be without doubt the lfc manager next season.
For the first time this season,I will be happy if lfc win and wont be sad if lfc lose.
However, i will like to pin point that manu won the 18th league thanks to arsenal or arshavin 4 goals at anfield.

Henry needs to sign a top quality defender and a very top quality midfielder and some more players to add strength in depth. Then only,we can start winning throphies.

Well yes, if losing meant Utd definitely don’t lift the title then sure I wouldn’t mind. But looking at this Arsenal team, even if they beat us they’ll screw up somewhere else. And Utd are of course Utd – they’ll pick up points by hook or often by crook, whether they deserve it or not. So, Liverpool-Arsenal will not be the title decider. #19 belongs to Utd. Full congrats to them and their refs.

Smash the Gunners!! If our defence remains disciplined, we’ll give our attackers a very good chance. Arsenal are a bunch of defeatists and irrespective of what happens on Sunday, Utd. will lift no. 19 and they damn well deserve to do so. They may not have the best squad, but their mentality and fighting spirit have carried them through.

seems like u are in the wrong forum…

Not at all. I’m being realistic. Credit given where credit is due. Utd. don’t even have the best squad in the league but they play with complete belief in their ability to dominate unlike Arsenal who barely put up a fight. Arsenal never have a plan B. They play beautiful football, but they lack killer instinct. I don’t love Utd., far from it. I’d love for them to crash and burn but there are certain things from their attitude and play that we can certainly learn from. They never ever give up, something we have forgotten over the past two seasons. We concede a goal and everybody’s head drops down. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging the strengths of your bitter rivals even if they happen to be scum.

Ridiculous. We always go into matches giving our all, agressive and attacking. That’s the Liverpool way. We won’t resort to throwing matches just to trip united, or anyone else for that matter. Liverpool football club plays for love of the game, with passion and integrity. Playing dirty little tricks like this is just not our way. We always fight. Head on. No matter the odds, or what happens to other teams. JFT 96 in memory of the hillborough 22nd anniversary today.

You are not a real Liverpool fan if you want the team to lose against Arsenal on Sunday. Under no circumstances should we be hoping the team loses even if it means we give Manutd a greater chance of getting No.19. This is simply not the Liverpool way and not a lose-lose situation at all, the team should go for the win and get as many points as possible for the remainder of the season and see where that takes us. The season is not over and Liverpool should push for the highest possible finish. And how stupid would it be if Liverpool do lose but Manutd still get No.19?

  • Dominic says:

As an Arsenal supporter I’m certain that Liverpool will try ro win the game. I’m also certain that if Arsenal win the red nosed one will be bleating to his press lackeys about teams rolling over to thwart United.

  • donypool,..Ghana says:

4 sure ams a true liverpool fan we hav 2 go to Emirates and empty the arsenals…………no mercy….losing with the aim of preventing UTD 19 is nonsense……YNWA

  • Jack says:

As a club, of course we will always go out to win. But as a supporter it will be a slight comfort if we do loose to Arsenal. The most annoying result in these kind of games is the DRAW – It dosen’t benefit either hope.
But I also believe Manure getting number nineteen will be a huge bloody weight off of our back if it happens and lets face it, all records are there to be broken. I think it will free us to finaly kick on and win number nineteen ourselves with proper ownership and that annoying “record” hoodoo gone. Instead of twenty years of looking behind us, now we will have our own encouraging future goal to reach!!
