Is it time to think the unthinkable over Daniel Agger?

|

As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, the loss of Agger is twofold due to our lack of variation in centre back styles. We lose a decent defender but we also lose an essential attacking outlet which leaves us asking ourselves whether we can actually achieve a European spot this season. Dirk Kuyt believes it is essential that we win all of our last seven games of the season. For me, it is a possibility greatly reduced by the loss of Great Dane, and emphasises the lack of variety and depth in our backline.

In a previous article last week, I suggested Gary Cahill as a possible option if we buy another centre half due to both his capabilities on the ball and his commanding presence in the air. I feel it is essential to have a balance in the backline of those who can play the ball from the back to those such as Skrtel and Carragher, who prefer to just clear their lines. If, that is, the Reds want to play an attractive brand of football, this requirement has to be met.

With Agger seemingly struggling to play even 20 league matches a season though, it raises the question of whether we would also have to replace him as well, Rather than just finding another defender who can compliment the Dane, it is time yet for us to think about replacing him rather than just supporting him? Don’t get me wrong, Agger is my favourite Reds defender, but is it time to make a decision over his future in the summer?

Good player but too injury prone. Sell.

Depending on how high his salary is, I’d keep him and get in another ball playing centre back and/or start giving Danny Wilson more games. Strength in depth is never a bad thing. As much as I love the guy, the defender we badly need to replace is Soto, he just makes too many costly mistakes and at 31 he isn’t going to improve.

I am in total disagreement with the last paragraph of his article, agger is a
world-class defender, okay, get hurt easily, but with a
player who can replace (cahill) could be even better. NO SALE

I believe Agger would make a great DM. His defensive abilities are well known, his ball playing skills are widely recognized, his passing is currently good and could improve with time at DM. And his somewhat fragile frame would take less hammer at DM.

And he has a great shot from long range – he scored some wonderful goals for the Reds in the past. Given some time at the position, he could make people forget Makele! (and Mascherano).

we need the man, gets injured a lot but when he’s fit can be trusted at the back. Right now only Carra is doing the job but yet Carra is getting older the great dane shouldn’t go. getting cahill though could be an option.
