A Quick Fix For Liverpool’s Left Back Woes?

|

25-year-old Honduran international Emilio Izaguirre has had a debut season to remember at Celtic Park. In a matter of months he has won over the fans, the pundits and it seems, a number of Premier League clubs who are said to be keeping tabs on the player.

Of course, Celtic boss Neil Lennon will be keen to keep hold of one of his best players in the hope of snatching the Scottish Premier League title away from Rangers next season. Despite his best efforts, however, it’s likely that Lennon will be in for a fight when it comes to keeping Izaguirre for another season.

The left-back was originally thought to be a transfer target for Manchester United, but given that they already have plenty of options in the full-back positions, is unlikely to be a priority. Liverpool on the other hand are in desperate need of acquiring a left-back. Their difficulties in that position this season are well documented.

Paul Konchesky failed to impress to such an extent that he was loaned out to a Championship side. Fabio Aurelio is a perennial sick note and Jack Robinson is just 17-years-old. It’s clear that something has to be done and that Liverpool need to spend money on this position in the summer.

In recent times they’ve been heavily linked to Newcastle’s Jose Enrique, Arsenal’s Gael Clichy, Benfica’s Fabio Coentrao and many other top left-backs. Now that they’ve been linked heavily to Emilio Izaguirre, it’s worth assessing whether he’s cut out to make it at Anfield and whether he’s a better option than the other names mentioned in conjunction with the club.

Keep yer filthy scouse mitts off

  • Danboo says:

Hahaha. You arrogant pratt. We’ll fleece you, just like Newcastle utd did. Paddy? Is that the best you can do you unemployed,perm-headed tit.?8m please. Now trot on.

  • Paul_teh_Gryrce says:

I’d be happy to pay £8mil for him. Only a pair of Koncheskys. Better option than Enrique and if Izaguirre is cheaper than even better. We’d save on wages too since Enrique is apparently the second best paid left back in the league.

Nothing wrong with being a ‘paddy’ either (though it isn’t exactly the most offensive term).

Pretty disappointed to see a Glaswegian (or a Celtic fan) call us on unemployment. Glasgow is one of the few places as bad (and in the last few years worse) than Liverpool. You should know better.

Celtic and Liverpool fans shouldn’t be at each other like this.

    YNWA

  • Danboo says:

It’s the arrogance of using ur debt induced cash. If we want him we will get him? What? Big boys now??? Not the Liverpool I remember. U take an arrogant approach to us n lace it with paddy, well, don’t expect me to throw flowers at ye.

Worse than man ure fans ye’re becoming.

  • BrigBhoy says:

Pilfering our songs, now pilfering our players? WTF?!?!

He’ll be staying for the Lennon Revolution!

    HAIL! HAIL!

    YNWA

    • Jack says:

Check anywhere on the internet about YNWA and it says:
‘this tradition began at Liverpool Football Club in the early 1960s and later spread to several other clubs’

And again Lennon is a TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Andy says:

Jack, as an avid LFC fan I find yuour comment depressing, seriously try constructing an arguement which isn’t insulting. While Neil Lennon, at times, has made it hard for himself everybody needs to grow up. Are you condoning the death threats, the beatings, the bullets and bombs sent to him? Because if you are then you are nothing but an idiot that good footballing people like Walter Smith and Ally McCoist and Kenny would have no bother in disowning.

      • Jay Wright says:

Tbh both sets of comments look pretty depressing – most football fans seem to have no class at all these days. Hopefully it’s mainly just the internet warrior thing…

    • Pedro says:

It’s not like you guys composed YNWA or Just Can’t get enough or fields of Athenry yourselves….you adopted it…just like we did and we tweaked it a bit… the original composers don’t have any problem with that so just bugger off with ur “stealing non-sense”…..also…not our problem if your left back finds us to be a better proposition than you lot….stop being bitter and show some Celtic class will you!!

  • Dean says:

Lol at Liverpool fan calling a Celtic fan “Paddy” obviously knows nothing about his own club .. As for Izaguirre if you lot can fork out £35M for Andy Caroll and rate Enrique at £15M then no less than £20M for Emilio he is one of the best left backs plying his trade at the moment. Keep your grubby scouse hands off!!!

  • Mu11en says:

Best left back on the market the now, please take him but get your cheque book out…10 mil and thats cheap.

    Love izzy but money talks

    Mn the hoops

  • Shab54 says:

Rather have izzy than the money tbh.

  • Jack says:

Celtic are a joke of a club playing in a micky mouse league!!

  • CC7 says:

Celtic are a bigger club than Liverpool! Emilio is too good for you and should stay so he can actually win something…….EPL=over-rated

    • Andy says:

Hang on a minute here CC7 I support both clubs and to claim Celtic is a bigger club is speculative in the extreme. If as I agree the EPL is over-rated what the heck standard is the SPL, it’s dire tripe which is why the Old Firm keep being linked away from it. Do you sell anyway near the merchandise Liverpool do? When was the last time Celtic spent more than £5 million on a player? How many European trophies have Celtic won in comparision to Liverpool? Can Celtic lay claim to the worldwide support Liverpool has, and don’t quote the Irish disapora to me they’re not all of the Catholic faith and even those who are there are many who don’t support Celtic. The lad has done well but I find it difficult to believe he’ll go from Celtic to a top 6 EPL team after a year at Celtic, he’ll need to prove himself in Europe which as a follower of Celtic I hope he does. However I’d say confidently he’d be a Celtic player next season.

      • Max says:

You don’t come anywhere near as big as Celtic when it comes to Global support!
I think the only British club that do would be Man U!
        What’s your stadium capacity?

        • Max says:

Ps. I think your getting a bit confused, don’t you mean you’re the biggest club in Liverpool??? ha ha ha!!

  • chris.cfc says:

andu just to keep i informed, u claim to support both teams then question celtics world wide support and have the cheek to bring religion in to it, typical arrogance and ignorance from a supporter of an epl team, celtic have supporters from ALL faiths in scotland. Celtic play friendly games in america and austrailia to sell out stadiums, and this doesn’t include the support from japan, china, south korea and south america, in 2003 celtic had over 80,000 fans travel to seville for the uefa cup final from all over the planet, not many teams in the world could take so many fans to foreign soil for 1 game, so to imply that we only have supporters from ireland cos their CATHOLIC just shows u know sweet fxxk all about celtic football club, as for emilio going to liverpool f.c he would be going to a better league (but not the best in the world as u all seem to delude yourselves with, more arrogance from epl team supporters, the best team in the epl got absolutely thumped in the CL final last night, the score line flattered them) but will emilio win a trophy or even play european football, doubtful so all this we’ll take him if we want him bxllxcks smacks of epl (best league in the world haha lol) arrogance yet again.

  • albey says:

A Calm Down Calm Down were both great clubs who have been interlinked over many years both have fantastic supporters and a fantastic choice in songs which we both share so lets not loose this over a player if the boy wants to stay at the mighty Celtic then thats his choice and we have to respect that but if he wants to leave then we have to pay Celtic a fair price but we must never loose the conextion of our two clubs albey

  • Said Abdi noor says:

I wil be more hapy whn jose arrve at liverpool

    • Shaunymo says:

Im not sure you’ve seen Jose play LB that much have you? hmmmm..Izzy is good and wouldn’t mind him, but I’d rather Leighton Baines in a heartbeat!!! Celtic fans are dreamers! I’m suprised the SPL is still around! Celtic are no more than a Championship type club may be a Prem bottom feeder at best!
