Are Hazard, Mata et al actually realistic targets for LFC?

|

Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Yann M’Vila are just some of the names that Liverpool have been linked with in recent months. For any Reds fan, such names sound exciting but I feel we have to be realistic about the sort of players that will arrive at Anfield in the summer.

Due to the fact that Liverpool will not be in the Champions League or possibly Europe at all next season, it means our sights have to be lowered somewhat. In the case of somebody like Kun Aguero who is expected to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer, the Argentine’s price tag alone of £40m+ will be enough to put off the Reds. On others such as Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata, price would not be an issue but it will necessarily come down to the specific aims and desires of the players themselves.

For Eden Hazard for example, he has stated recently that he doesn’t want to move to Real Madrid because he fears he wouldn’t get a first team place at the Bernabeu. A potential opportunity for the Reds to exploit then, but Hazard then goes on to explain that Inter or Arsenal would be his preferred destination. Places where he can get first team football but also, crucially, play in the Champions League like he can with Lille next season.

A similar problem would most probably arise when trying to purchase Juan Mata. The Spanish playmaker is a player I have long admired, but if the reports are true that Manchester City are indeed interested, the Reds may have little chance of acquiring the Valencia midfielder. City can offer more money and Champions League football next season, while we would have to hope that our history and stature alone could attract the player. The same could be said of another winger Alexis Sanchez who is also attracting interest from Eastlands.

Some players believe in Liverpool and some believe in money.

We’ll get the former regardless of whether another club makes a bigger offer or whether we’re in Europe next season or not. As for the latter, they might be good but we wouldn’t want them anyway. Play for the shirt or don’t play at all. We don’t need people on the team playing for the salary…

  • farhan says:

i think we can do with hazard or sanchez and from the second list of players u are missing payet or elia or marin will do. and but the way great comment red2death

  • DanielLFC says:

I think those signings along with say Hitzlsperger, Parker and maybe a left back and we would have a VERY good team. However, I think we should leave Downing and go for Diego Perotti.

  • richard says:

I’ve heard hazard isn’t too excited about playing for Liverpool. Same with Ashley Young. Some players just aren’t into liverpool. Some will be. But I think if we make one big signing, other players will follow. Who wouldn’t want to play on a team with Suarez and Mata. The problem is getting that first signing.

  • Mike says:

Yup, and thats why evereyone is being way too optimistic about our title chances next season. It will take 2-3 years before we are there yet. But of course we can compete for League and FA cup again.

  • Moz says:

why not aguero, if he sees liverpool are going to improve (which they are) then that might tempt him to come even if we are not in europe

  • DanielLFC says:

Because Aguero’s price is reportedly something like £45million which is ridiculously expensive seeing as we don’t have the sales to cover it.
This is a list of the players I think would fit into the team well, that would strengthen the areas needed and wouldn’t cost astronomical fees each:

    Scott Parker CM
    Thomas Hitzlsperger CM
    Mario Gomez ST
    Sylvain Marveux LW/CAM
    Diego Perotti LW/RW
    Ashley Young LW/RW/CAM
    Mamadou Cissokho LB
    Blaise Matuidi CDM
    Eljero Elia LW/RW/CAM
    Iker Munian ST
    Charles N’Zogbia LW/RW

    • Pedro says:

Gomez will cost a minimum of 30 million. The others would fit our price range though. You also forgot about Affelay. He, Kuyt and Suarez will form a fantastic partnership.

      • DanielLFC says:

I don’t think so as Gomez isn’t a regular started for Bayern anymore however I do agree he would most likely be the most expensive. I thought about Affelay and I would love him to come but it is just the matter of prising him away from Barcelona.

  • Rory says:

We need two quality players, one in midfild and one in offense, we have not enough quality and everybody saw this sunday, games vs teams like fulham, birmingham counts a little, you can see the real value of teams and players in the great matches and sunday we’ve seen that when we must attack we don’t have enough talented players but since we’ll have the cash let’s splash it for two big players, no middle level players like mata (david silva is better even if i don’t like him too much) that will also cost us 20/25 millions…come on…let’s go after real talents like neymar or alexis sanchez, we need fast and quality guys that can create space with suarez and help carrol, and than a playmaker in midfild (same tipe of xabi or fabregas), if you want to play well, you need good players, easy and clear

  • steven hollingworth says:

how about trying for adam johnson? citeh will only want him next season as a sub. when they’ve finished signing iniesta, messi and ronaldo he may as well find somewhere else to play. he’s an england international but that won’t count for much.

    • Rory says:

correct, adam johnson could be a nice one, surely better than mata, and probably with 17/18 millions he could come to anfield, mata will cost 20/25 (ridiculous)

  • gerard says:

Players like Mata, Hazard, or Sanchez are not the sinequanon to be on top of the premier league. There are other players, may be unknown, who can do the job as well provided they fit the position and the team. what is most important then is the MOTIVATION they have to WIN. Liverpool was near relegation and now they are near the top leaguers. Weren’t they the same players? It’s all about how the manager motivate and use the players on the field.

    • sri says:

      great comment!totally agree with you!!

    • Rory says:

i agree at half, surely the motivation is a must but thr fact is clear, if you wanna win or compete at the best level you need great players, sunday we clearly saw that, spearing for example has good motivation but at great level it’s not enough

      • Shaunymo says:

Lad, we had Meireles and Stevie out in the midfield! 1 out is ok because Lucas lacks that offensive punch, but both hurts the movement of the ball in the midfield (Maxi is an attacking player and Spearing is not)…I’m sure if Kenny moved his tactics to have G.Johnson play on the right wing with Wilson in the LB role and may be bringing in Jova and Cole in the lineup, the score may be have been different!

    • Shaunymo says:

Good thinking lad! I know ppl will lambast me for this, but whats wrong in spending 9 million on a prem proven Charles N’Zogbia??? Scores more than Mata and reminds me of an erratic John Barnes! Fantastic game this weekend the lad had! Why does everyone think a bunch of “big namers” can do it! Everyone calls Hazard (defo will not come)and Sanchez, Mata,Marin..lol…THIS IS MADNESS! You all know full well Kenny/Commoli won’t go “ManCity” Crazy!!! Be real everyone. N’Zogbia, Park Chu Young, Daniel Sturridge (Still don’t know why didn’t take him in the Torres deal. He could’ve been that X-factor coming off the bench), Leighton Baines (Red Scouser), Turan (Has the Reds in his heart) and a defender to replace the ever-injured Agger (on the outs)..May be a player with Sami-like skill..Brende Haangaland? Those 5:Baines, Park Chu Young, N’Zogbia, Haangaland, Sturridge and Turan would do the Reds just fine! Move Kelly into the CB Role with Carra and Skrtel and run G.Johnson up the Right! Use Stevie G to spray the ball around to Meireles and the forwards with Lucas playing behind him! Liverpool needs 4 strikers and with Carroll, Kuyt, Suarez and potentially Sturridge we’d be a force to be reckon with…

      • IPAULRODX says:

Sturridge is a die hard rent bhoy, he would never join a club rival to chelsea like liverpool, especially if kenny think carrol should start forward over kuyt.Park chi is the same and haangaland will never leave fulham after signing a new 5 year deal there. Apart frpm that your right

  • steve p says:

I can see the following joining. I agree with some comments about a big signing and then others following. I would be happy with one marquee signing and believe we will get one. But the others will be players who fit in with the youthful policy we are employing, and are talented up and coming players. Here’s my list of potential recruits.

Mata, McCarthy (wigan) or Defour, enrique, jones (blackburn) or another cb, wickham or another promising striker.

Out the door will be: Kyriakos, Konchesky, Poulson, Ngog, Insua, ince (shame as won’t sign contract), Darby, jova + more.

I can also see more of the kids being bought into the squad to take the place of the over paid has beens who may be more experienced but nowhere near as talented as the crop of kids we now have.

I can also see aquaman back. If not then use the cash to bring in a top attacking midfield talent like Honda.

  • nigel says:

scott parker, elia, diego perotti, wickham, iker munain, marin, phil jones, marc albrighton, kyle walker on loan at villa this season, steven defour, arturo vidal, matuidi. All realistic targets for this summer!

  • Alex says:

its not just Aguero’s price that is the problem it wages too ad he is earning loads at Ath and with England taxes we have to pay him massive wages.
and sometimes the less known players can be better look at city, Kompany has bee 1 of there best signings and he was not known as amazing and wasnt expensive.

  • nigel honeyman says:

lfc should spend very wisely this summer a young is very over rated and he not worth 25 mill and their is abetter man for the job faster skillfull on the ball and the man to drive the ball to carrol and is only 15mill and daglish should look no futher than arda turan and back up stricker at good money go for dem ba he a goal scorcer then when we get to champ leag next season then let the magor spending begin and win epl and champ l and fa cup and rub it in fergie face

  • for the look of things is our club [lfc]have lost out on all the players they’ve been going for,the reasons [1]is that we lfc are out of europa league [2]mr,comolli is french man and he’ll lost on bringing top players because of the sign on fees that he’ll pricing the players, with all this there is no way lfc can attract all those players lfc contact before.pls mr,kenny and comolli should make sure they don’t lose out on signing -KARIM BENZEMA-RAMADEL FALCAO-HULK-LASSANA DIARRA-JUAN MATA-SERGIO AGUERO-ALEXIS SANCHEZ-MARKO MARIN-DIEGO PEROTTI-EDEN HAZARD.with this coming in to support our new hero [LUIS SUAREZ]next season lfc are sure of trophy.

  • redfan23 says:

Agree with the article. Those of you who fondly believe the biggest names will come to Anfield no problem are in cuckoo land. No CL, and even no Europe makes a huge difference. I think the Nzogbia shout (Shaunymo)is a good one. Helluva player and would come at a good price. The truth is its going to take 2-3 seasons to get back there or thereabouts. The other teams have got bigger squads now and will spend at least as much as we do. We are playing catch up

  • Rory says:

If we have the cash it doesn’t mean that we must spend for middle level players, i think that if you wanna win you need great players so, it’ better to acquire two 40 millions players than four 20 millions since we have already a good base, so go for big names, one between Tevez (already top level) or Neymar/Alexis Sanchez (super talents if you have see them), and a playmaker (Fabregas O_O, Xabi O_O)

  • Eric says:

Liverpool should forget about competing with the likes of Man City or Real Madrid for players like Mata, Sanchez or Hazard. They are no doubt great players but they will be looking for Champions League football. We are Liverpool and the history and stature of the club is attractive but at the end, those players will be looking to play in the Champions League. Hazard might have a chance to play for a bigger club in Liverpool but why would he come if we don’t have Champions League on offer while Lille do?

There are players around who are equally as good and would require no time in adapting to the Premier League. Liverpool should be focusing on signing N’Zogbia and A.Young who will cost less and will be more willing to join a club without Champions League football. N’Zogbia is a fantastic player who can dribble, can cross, has speed and chips in with his fair share of goals. Just look at the guy now, single-handedly rescuing Wigan. And at 24, he fits FSG’s transfer policy and could be available for 9-10m, even less if Wigan are relegated. James McCarthy, excellent young player, would also be available for less than 10m and would be a great signing.

There are other players who would be more willing to join the club and who would be available for less like Elia, Marin and Turan. Surely these players who are good value for money are better alternatives to spending 20-25m on players like Sanchez, Hazard and Mata.
