Reasons why the Reds have NOT been knocked off their perch

|

We received the following reasoning from a Norwich fan:

As there continues to be frequent references of Liverpool being ‘knocked off their perch’, I thought I’d once again look to challenge this from a neutral perspective (I’m a Norwich fan and have no preference over Man Utd or Liverpool).

The claim of United now being ‘top dogs’ seems to be based on their extra league title. However, I would argue that it’s necessary to consider a club’s success in all tournaments before arriving at such a conclusion. Further consideration has to be given to the value of each competition (i.e, a Champions League victory is greater than a League Cup victory), therefore to fairly assess who really does sit on the perch, it is necessary to give a priority score to each tournament. The fairest way I could put this was:

European Cup/Champions League = 5 points for each tournament won.
League Champions = 4 points for each title won.
Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup = 3 points for each tournament won.
FA Cup = 2 points for each tournament won.
League Cup = 1 point for each tournament won.

I am not including the European Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup, World Club Championship or the Charity Shield, as all are more exhibition matches than proper tournaments.

If you tally Man Utd’s victories in each competition and multiply by the appropriate score, they reach a total of 120 points. They will score 125 if they beat Barca in this year’s Champions League final.

Liverpool on the other hand currently score 127 points, therefore in my completely impartial opinion, Liverpool are yet to be knocked off top spot. Sorry United fans, but Fergie’s work still isn’t done.

I dont really care if United became more succesfull overall or not, they didn’t get their 19’th title over night.
It has been 20 years of United competing for titles and winning and 20 years of Liverpool failing even to chalange.

To keep aura of greatness alive, Liverpool must get back where they belong ASAP.

Investing heavily in transfer market would be just a small step forward.
Reason why Liverpool must spend a lot of money is that they need young and proven players like Hazard, Gervinho, Young or Mata and Sakho.

They can not afford to buy older players because they need to build for the future and they have proven to be somewhat unssucesfull at devoloping their own talen of late.

Hopefully that will change but for now a major push is needed, not to mention a bigger stadium!

Being an LFC red it could be said that I may be a touch biased, but the bottom line is you are only as good as your last game or season wise as good as your last season, either way United have the edge and we’ll just have to live with it until next season when hopefully we can even the score.

No offence but this is a load of rubbish, at the end of day no matter how hard it is to take and beleive me it is we have been knocked off just move on we got to look to a brighter future now. But they still got a long way to go in Europe, but i wouldn’t rule them out doing that aswell.

When Fergie first made that statement i think no 1 would have expected him to actually do it even pundits laughed. I also think Liverpool never really challenged them and gave it up to them it was our own dismise most of the time that they our leaders now 19 times.

Looking to the future i have great hopes we have the best manager for the job now and club stability and backing from the new owners, this is the first time i would say since probably Kenny left that we have big hopes for our side for next season with the moneys thats going to be available, having King Kenny and Clarke, kids coming through, Suarez, Meireles and Carroll and the rest the futures bright the futures LFC……YNWA……JFT96

Yes, Manure take almost 20 years to overtake our record and Liverpool failing even to challenge.

With KK in the club, i believe now is the time for LIVERPOOL to show the true color that have been missing for very long long time ago.

  • Lfc4Life says:

Yh It took them 36yrs to beat our record…..
now let’s see how long they can hold on to it!

Spurs fan here. I used to have a lot of respect for the Liverpool tradition. But talking to Liverpool fans not only beguile me but also give me the impression that fans from the Liverpool are stupid and lost touch of reality. No Spurs fans dare say that over the last 20 years Arsenal had been the better team. We just shut ourselves over the achievement of our neigbours.

Pleaase stop these rubbish. Manu had been top dog over you for a long time and you even end up below spurs.

    The table never lie.

      To Jos

You are an absolute idiot. Havent you read the above statements of our fans? We are completely agrre that in last 20 years we failed to even make any challange. We have accepted that they sat on our pearch. But if you seen the history we have overtaken them twice. We will do that again. We would prefer to do it silently rather than barking on other clubs site like you. You have qualified for CL for once and you have started talking. You are the most deluded fan.So shut up and f***k off from here.

        LOL

      • zahid says:

Enjoy it whilst it lasts mate you Spurs fans will come back down to earth with a bump soon (Oh sorry you already have lol) enjoy your last season with Harry before he takes up the England job and fails misserably the most poison chalice of jobs in World Football and all your so called top players leave with him. Maybe he’ll leave in the summer after his court case with HMRC

        • Jos says:

Err… right we are not in CL this season but where is Liverpool next season… oh… not even in Europe.. ouch…Challenging Manu ? There is hope pools fans maybe a trip out of the country to Cardiff for the league cup…LOL… Dump is dump… think before you even open up your loud mouth

        • zahid says:

err we wern’t in contention this season coz we had a clueless manager at the begining, but thats our fault, but the way we finished with our squad we wern’t far off you, besides not being in the Europa is a blessing, ask Tim Sherwood wern’t he going on about how Spurs will play they’re youth in Europe, so will they name they’re 25 youth team players for europe in they European squad?

We can concentrate on getting back in the top 4 first, then if and only then if we are still in contention with the top then we will make a title charge. But no matter where we were this season and what we have and havn’t qualified for we still have more pull then Spurs for the top players and Suarez n Carroll prove that they wanted to come to us more then the lane. We are bigger then you and always will be……YNWA

    • Marazello says:

did Spurs fan lost his way to this site?? come on when the last time spurs win the tittle?? you are talking rubbish.. how can you brag yourself up here just because you qualify for EL? hope your players got more injury playing in EL..just because you play in CL this season that mean you can considered as top 4?? if you are top 4 why you sit at 5th?? 4th and 5th is different number and position.. come on even kid know the different between 4 and 5.. you are dreaming want to win the CL even the league tittle you can’t get it.. keep your feet on ground like we do.. we accept the final position. we accept who we are.. so stop talking.. bring your tittle to lane if you want to brag.. YNWA!!!

  • m kop says:

Liverpool wouldn’t feel much better playing EL, it is maybe comforting for some clubs, and a major step up for Tottenham playing in European competition secund year running but that alone will never satisfy Liverpool’s ambitions.

I dont feel the need to go on Spurs site an make idiotic comments, I would maybe taken the time to annoy United or a Chelsea fan if a mood strikes me but never Spurs.
I wonder why is it so.
