The Daily Star is reporting that Liverpool and Arsenal will fight it out for the signing of Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing. The England international raised questions over his Villa future yesterday after stating he was at a “crossroads” in his career and would not be signing a new contract for the time being:
“I am 26 and at a major crossroads in my career, so I won’t be committing to a new deal at the moment. The most important thing to me is to play football but I would like to play Champions League football at some point.”
Downing still has two years remaining on his contract but the statement could ignite interest from the Reds and the Gunners in the £15million rated midfielder, according to the Star.
