We’d be stupid not to get him back at any cost

|

It’s been almost an entire season now (just three more games to go now) since I suggested that we should bring Sami Hyypia back in a player-coach role, and in admitting that he had tried to, Roy Hodgson let us in on just about the only sensible thing he tried to do as Liverpool coach.

The news in the last 24 hours that Sami has now announced his retirement from football at the age of 37 has interested me a great deal.  If it wasn’t for the fact that he simultaneously declared his intention to coach with Leverkusen and the Finish national side, we’d be stupid not to dive in there and snap him up.  However, letting him have a good 12 months to get his coaching schooling and gain some experience might be a wise move for Liverpool; the club he surely feels most of an affinity with, given that he spent 10 very successful years with the club.  Don’t get me wrong, I’d snap Sami up in any role to bring back this afternoon, if I thought it was possible but it doesn’t appear that it is at the moment.

This summer is going to be incredibly important for Liverpool, there’s going to be between 20-25 comings and goings if we’re to believe everything we read and given that there is going to be some pretty extensive restructuring at the club, it probably won’t be too far off that.  The main focus this summer will undoubtedly be on players – getting the right ones in and moving the dead wood and surplus out.

So perhaps next summer, 12 months on when he’s got a full years experience under his belt and has decided on the role he wishes to play in football, we could look to bringing big Sami back over here and assisting in putting our club back where it belongs.  Because if he can influence the side in the way he used to influence the defence when he was here, then we’d be stupid not to get him back at any cost.

I'm a 32 year old Liverpool fan, living in the heart of the City Centre. I've supported the club since the day I was born and have been writing articles for L4L for over 3 years, writing close over 350 articles in that time. My favorite player of the past generation is Sami Hyypia.

I am the current editor for L4L, with my day job being in R&D for the NHS.

    Get Sami back!

  • Aj says:

would love to have him back, albeit 15 years younger, but would also like to see less of this 20-30 comings and goings nonsense. squad needs 3-4 world class players, however cover is adequate for next season. a 50m fund and 5 high earners to leave (jova, poulsen, konchesky, cole and aquilani) for 25m would leave us well placed to bring in some excellence to compliment the first team and provide competition.

    All the best Sami. YNWA.

He would make a great defensive coach Rafa offered him that job but he said hes still got a few more years left in him, but he did say he would love to come back as coach one day, so i say lets get him back as one of King Kennys back room staff.

Sami Hyypia Legendary player good luck to him but there will always be a home for him at Liverpool……YNWA JFT96

    LEGEND!

  • Pedro says:

Would love Sami back as our defensive coach in the future. A lot of youngsters used to look up to him during his time here. Carra and him would make a very interesting duo in the future.

  • Matt Castellian says:

Nice article – agree with all the comments. What a player, what a man, what a legend. Don’t make them like him anymore. My favourite player of all time.

  • calel says:

Bring Sami back. pay him yaya toure money and get him.

    • Eric says:

Sami Hyypia loves the club so much we wouldn’t need to pay him “Yaya Toure” money to get him. Sami would come back even if he doesn’t get paid, that’s how much he loves Liverpool FC.

    Silly sentimental post!!

    • Kev Crawford says:

It’s good to read a “silly sentimental post” At least we’re more positive about the team so we’re not all moaning. It’s good remember a loyal legend. Do you change your “name” every time we get a new player? You probably used to be NandoRed!!! or NinoRed!!!

  • Mike Arms says:

Sami is a legend. But with Carragher not far from retirement and hopefully staying on at the club in some capacity aswell as the new coaching staff of Clarke and the ever present Lee then how many coaches and back room staff do we need?
We also have Rush doing a job and the Spanish academy personnel would want to being their own staff in, so what position would Sami fill exactly?

  • Mez says:

him and didi hamann oughta return to the coaching staff for us

  • turks says:

@Mike Arms – With all due respect to both yourself and Carra, Jamie has never and never will be fit to lace Sami’s boots, also struggle to see how Ian Rush would make a better defensive coach?

    • Chris says:

Turks, you are even more stupid than the title of this post.

      • Kev Crawford says:

        Elaboration please Chris – Why?

        • Chris says:

Turks: (1) Carra not being fit to lace sami’s boots is a ridiculous comment, and (2) the difference between definite and indefinite articles; Mike Arms said Ian Rush is doing “a” job, not “the” job, and that’s assuming Turks thinks this is a reference to a “defensive” coach role, and there’s no reason to assume he was referring to that. Furthermore, I think Mike Arms made some well considered points, and provided some much needed balance to the discussion.

Title: needlessly sensational. clearly we shouldn’t bring him back at any cost. I understand the website wants to attract readers so they can improve their advertising revenues, but it should also try to maintain some credibility.

          Ok?

  • HypHypHooRaheem says:

Get him back to coach the defence.Should never have sold him in the first place. The amount of goals we conceded from set pieces after he left was testament to his reading of the game.
A true legend and could probably be considered the best piece of transfer business in the modern game.

  • Rory says:

Sami has been one or probably the most underrated defender in the world, he was slow but amazing positioning (defensively and offensively), amazing air game, great passing ability for a defender, terrific leadership and knowledge of the game, in two words: a leader (in and of the field), i would love have him next to Kenny (or Rafa) in the place of Sammy Lee…(he give everything but in my opinion he’s not a great technic support, and we’ve seen that with Rafa, with Woy)

    • ken08 says:

Love all this Rafa conundrum,i also would love to see his abilities used for the good of LFC,and i`m sure he would come in some capacity(Kenny for Prem/Rafa for Europe?)but now Clarky`s here it seems its K/C pulling the tactical strings. ynwa

  • Eric says:

Kenny Dalglish or whoever is in charge next season should do everything to bring Sami Hyypia back. He can be defence coach and his experience will help improve Skrtel and Agger’s game and help bring through the likes of Kelly, Ayala and Wilson. Having the right backroom staff is just as important as having the right players on the pitch and getting Sami to return as an assistant or coach is a MUST.

  • moz says:

would be great to see sami back at anfield, sami hyypia = legend

  • wickid says:

Bring him back in the summer as a defensive coach whilst he is earning his coaching badge.
