France Football are reporting (link to article in French here) that Liverpool are interested in signing striker Nolan Roux from Ligue One side Brest. 23 year old Roux is contracted to the French club until 2013 and would cost up to €8million according to the French publication. So who is Roux?
After spending time in the youth ranks of Caen and Beavais, he moved to Lens in 2004. He made his league debut for Lens in the 2008/09 campaign, coming on as a second half substitute in a second division league match against Metz in September 2008, before moving to Brest in 2009.
In his first season at Brest he scored 15 goals and provided five assists as the club were promoted to Ligue One. During his first season in the top flight with Brest he scored six goals in 25 starts, helping the club to a 16th place finish, just above the relegation zone.
Over the past year he has been linked with moves to Lyon and Tottenham. His game seems to fit with the physical nature of the Premier League. Although not the tallest at 5ft 11, he does win his fair share of headers and is a threat when crosses are whipped in from both flanks.
He is most prominent physical characteristic though is his pace. His acceleration without the ball is noteworthy and tends to make useful forward runs behind the defence to beat the offside trap. He is not however as quick with the ball at feet and his technique on the ball probably still needs to improve so he can beat opposition defenders one on one.
Roux also is a tremendous striker of the ball but he lacks the ability to really finish with any subtlety or finesse, and doesn’t really slot his finishes away with a sense control. Still he seems to be a striker who relies on his instincts and tends to be in the right place at the right time.
One of the biggest factors as to why Liverpool might be interested is his adaptability. Roux can also play off the striker or play from the right hand side. He can create chances as well as score them, perhaps making him a useful squad player if David Ngog does depart for Sunderland.
