It’s a new day, which can only mean one thing: Liverpool will have been linked in some capacity to a winger of varying talent and ability. Today is no different and Aaron Lennon is the latest name to join the list of wingers linked with a potential move to Liverpool. According to a number of sources the Reds have made Lennon a key target and are preparing to launch a £20m bid for his services.

Whilst links with the likes of Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez may represent more exciting prospects for the club, the potential signing of Lennon from Tottenham does seem more in line with Kenny Dalglish’s transfer dealings this summer. He’s currently plucking up all available British talent and Lennon ticks both boxes given that he was born in Leeds and is fairly handy with the ball at his feet.

What’s more, there were rumours throughout last season that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp and Aaron Lennon had had a falling out (these disputes were said to have culminated with Lennon’s no-show for Spurs’ 4-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champion’s League). Whether there’s any truth to these claims remains to be seen, but it may well be the case that Tottenham are prepared to sell Lennon, should the right bid come in.

The question that we ought to ask ourselves, however: Should Liverpool really pursue Aaron Lennon?

A season or two ago he looked to be the real deal. He had (and still has to some degree) pace, directness and an ability to beat players that made him a genuine threat down the wings. However, last season must have been something of a disappointment for Lennon. He never really found his best form and probably didn’t get as much game time as he would have hoped for.
