His Signing Could Provide All Sorts of Possibilities

With Liverpool reportedly interested in Blackburn Rovers’ centre back Phil Jones, I thought it maybe a good idea to look hypothetically at which centre back partnership would be best for the Reds if the 19 year old did in fact arrive this summer:

Carragher & Skrtel – This partnership has been solid for the most part since King Kenny arrived as manager. While Jamie had his injury problems last season, Skrtel has played every minute of every Premier League match, with his form improving as the campaign went on. A concern for me with the pairing is that they encourage the backline to play too deep when they play because of their lack of pace, and they also lack the ability to pass out from the back; a quality essential to Dalglish’s pass and move philosophy.

Carragher & Agger – A cornerstone of Liverpool’s Champions League final run in 2007, the pairing has had limited game time together in recent seasons due to injuries to both players. While the Dane is the most gifted player on the ball, allowing an additional midfield option when bringing the ball forward, Carra compliments his footballing centre half partner, with his organisation and communication and no-nonsense defending. With the number of injuries to Agger and the fact that Carragher is now 33, it means this partnership could not be seen to be a long term solution for Liverpool’s centre back issues.

Agger & Skrtel – This pairing is definitely one of my favourites for a variety of reasons. For starters, Skrtel really needs somebody alongside him, such as Agger or Carragher, who can be decisive and authoritative. I think it is fair to say that the Slovakian is not the best organiser at the back and he kind of needs somebody alongside him who can communicate well, and ensure he is in the right place at the right time. Skrtel’s aerial ability combined with Agger’s passing range means the pairing compliment each other very well.

What!!! Scott Dann is better than this lad and he’s a scouser at heart! Why buy Danny Wilson and not let him play?? hmmmmmm…I really don’t understand! ;s
The whole Agger thing just angers me! He’s injured 90% of the time and we have Wilson, Coady, and Wisdom in the ranks.

Agger is our best center back BY FAR. If he’s in the team I couldn’t care less who partners him.

hmmmmmmmm…when is he in the lineup???…I went to 20 games this season and wore his kit once, because he’s rarely healthy! I love the guy, don’t get me wrong, but HE’S INJURY PRONE!

    Don’t forget about Ayala.

Phil Jones is a promising youngster but Kenny and Comolli should be looking to improve other areas of the squad first such as left back and wingers. We currently have Skrtel, Agger and Carragher at centre back while Kelly will slowly be given more chances in this position. We also have the likes of Ayala and Wilson who are just as promising so Liverpool should not waste the reported 15m on this guy.

Cahill=overpriced=over-rated! Dann does the same, but Cahill gets all the accolades because his amazing bicycle kick 2 YEARS AGO!!! :S

  • zahid says:

Cahill, Jones, Dann, Shawcross or Kjaer?????? out of them i think Kjaer n Dann would be the cheapest but could be wrong……YNWA

  • anfield rd dreamer says:

Kjaer and Dann for me everyday of the week. Arguably as good as any of the other targets in terms of ability and proven at multiple levels (Shawcross was a flop at uniteds academy Cahill was stinking up the subs bench at villa not long ago Jones has only played for one club may not live up to expectations) both kjaer and dann are reasonably priced and will increase in value and both will play with passion for the club!

this was a waste of time this article, theres very little chance of it happening.

why dont you make articles when there is concrete evidence of us being linked with a player, everyone knows skysports fabricates 90% of their stories

dann has no pace jones is a good footballer and could play in midfield as well or right/left back but we should sell agger we have kelly skrtel carra wilson but we need a left back and wingers unless we go 3 at the back

cahill – so over rated and over hyped by his english tag, his price is just a disgrace.

dann – he maybe a liverpool fan in the past, and come from the area but thats nothing to do with it! that doenst make him and great player, and at 10 mill thats a joke, they have been relegated and they want 10 mill, more like 6 mill. no pace, and he gets knocks allot for me too. no thanks.

CHRISTOPHER SAMBA – at blackburn, now he is a strong fit, stuff, great in the air and never missed games, he knows the league and is used to living in the north, would settle well and would give us more power at the back too. for around 10 mill and at 27 he still is worth every penny, if we are buying form here in this league then he has to be first ion th elist.

jones – to young, when we have other many up and coming talents in wilson, ayala, and wisdom, and the club have said that they are not going to buy if it hurts and stops the growth of other leading young talent, so for me jones is not what we want, at his price for what? 15 mill thats a piss take and for what he has done for that to get him a move to liverpool? i think we start giving respect before its earned in football, good player he might well be over time, world class is he – no, will he be better than any if what we have – no way and will he be that good, no way, leave well alone for god sake.

  • Alex says:

good prospect but dont need him. connar coady and andre wisdom are looking pretty good and may be breaking through next season

  • andy says:

think you all might be missing the point this guy reads the game so well and is strong in the tackle and if he does arrive i think he should play along side gerrard in defencive midfield position

  • Willcomp says:

I think in two years Kelly will be first choice center back

  • Jack says:

    We’ll just buy everyone!!!!

  • tony says:

jones & skyrtel carra getting on a bit jones is quality defender agger always injured

  • peter says:

Phil Jones is an amazing player he is 19 playing in a pretty poor team. But he plays like he is surronded by the best players in the world he is one of the most composed defenders ive seen for a long time buy him because utd and city and even wenger are buzzin round.

  • KopiteAnt says:

Why is everyone forgetting about Danny Wilson??
