Is our pursuit of him totally unnecessary?

Reports have suggested that this week Liverpool will open up negotiations with Blackpool over their midfield talisman Charlie Adam, who enjoyed a remarkable season in the Premier League, attracting many potential suitors. Liverpool are widely expected to continue their January transfer market approach by spending big, but is the former Rangers man actually needed on Merseyside?

Well, why wouldn’t a big side want Adam’s 12 goals and 9 assists? Imagine the statistics the Blackpool man could achieve next season with the likes of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard around him. But perhaps the reason the Scot has done so well is because he was one of, if not the, main attacking outlet at Blackpool; on Merseyside he would be in amongst several world class players in the final third. Would Adam thrive or get lost in amongst some of football’s biggest names?

Tactically Adam is an ideal signing for any manager to have, centre midfield, attacking midfielder or even a deep lying striker, but who would he replace? Kenny Dalglish appears to already be onto a winning formation, so too much transfer activity could hinder his rebuilding process. If Adam were to join though, I simply cannot see who he would replace. Lucas’ performances have improved greatly this season, and he is the only defensive minded midfielder in the starting line up, so sacrificing the Brazilian would be foolish.

Steven Gerrard is obviously the first name on the team sheet (even if his influence has dropped in the last couple of seasons) and then you have Raul Meireles and the returning Alberto Aquilani to consider. The main issue I would have in signing Adam is the impact it would have on Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing, both youngsters who have enjoyed breakthrough seasons and are key in what ‘King Kenny’ is trying to achieve at Liverpool, but signing another centre midfielder would no doubt force the two Englishman out on loan or reduce them to merely a few league cup appearances. Oh, and there is of course a certain Jordan Henderson to consider.

He’s not crap but us completely unnecessary. I have no idea why we’re stocking up on players for the spine of a team that’s as good as anybody’s. Wide positions are a massive problem for us.

I’m amazed why so many Liverpool fans can’t see what King Kenny is doing. He is not buying first team players. He is adding depth and quality to our squad. That is what we have been lacking in the past years. Just look at Man Utd. They virtually have 2 teams in their squad that is good enough to beat any team in the Premier League. That is what King Kenny is trying to do here. I believe in him keeping all the players happy. He will instill “nobody is bigger than the club” mindset just like whiskey nose Fergie is doing to United. If anybody other than Fergie can do this, its King Kenny.

I’ll second that, we need to stop looking at expensive wank squad players and start buying class.

  • Blkkfh says:

So basically no premier league players then

    • Rory says:

exactly, we already have a good base and bench, just need two top players, an offesnsive wing like Sanchez, a playmaker in midfield like schweinsteiger, and a mid level left back, nothing more nothing less…

@ sam…you really think that mata and cazorla are better than downing!? come on, be serious mate, downing, mata and cazorla are three good players but not top players, they’re ok for mid-high teams like tottenham or everton, not for a top team like liverpool…mata, cazorla and downing for tottenham, sanchez, aguero or tevez for liverpool

  • john says:

Liverpool do not need to charlie adam! we need a defensive midfielder as yann m vila, or Blaise Matuidi to help
lucas, plus Coady can play in that position too.
I do not think we need a central defender, we have kelly
wilson, Wisdom and buy a left back, as Erik Pieters, or
Mamadou Sakho (they can play both center and the
left) are covered, as we have robinson and
Mavinga. We need two left-backs, downing is simply not good enough, I would like to see a hazard (lille not sell) and Arda Turan. anyway we have Paul Ince, who did well on loan. a right-lateral (preferably less than 24) I would like Georgian Wijnaldum (although said he prefers the position of attacking midfielder) and at least one more striker, as Wickham (and possibly Romelu Lukaku)

    • Marvel says:

@John: if every club reasoned like u, nobody would be makin any signings cos every1 probably has 2 youth players in every position.
