Naming Liverpool’s Seven Most Likely Summer Signings

According to reports Kenny Dalglish is likely to have substantial amounts of money to spend this summer, potentially in the region of £80 million to rejuvenate his squad. This will potentially be the most money spent in a summer transfer window since the 07? summer transfer window where Liverpool spent in the region of £65 million on Torres, Babel, Mascherano, Benayoun and Voronin who was a free transfer. There have been a large amount of rumours flying around as per usual at this time of year, and I want to discuss who I think will be coming to Anfield this summer.

Jordan Henderson: This transfer has already been completed and is believed to be £16 million up front with £4 million in future add ons. It is a huge amount on a player who turns 21 next week and has only had 1 full season in the Premier League, but I believe it is a shrewd piece of business by Liverpool. He is a versatile player who can play Centre Midfield and Right Midfield, and has huge amounts of energy. He covers on average 13km in a game which is unbelievable, and has a good range of passing. He is a typical box to box midfield, but just needs to add more goals to his game to fulfil his undoubted potential.

Charlie Adam: Liverpool have been pursuing Adam since last January but are confident of getting there man this summer following Blackpool’s relegation from the Premiership. A fee in the region of £9-10 million seems likely, and would be reasonable for a player of his great technical ability. The 26 year old will give Liverpool the passing ability and intelligence that Liverpool have lacked since Xabi Alonso left the club and will make us an even bigger threat at set pieces. Blackpool scored the most goals from set pieces this season which is evidence of Adam’s ability from a dead ball situation, and his freekick against Blackburn this season was one of the best I’ve seen.

Stewart Downing: Liverpool have been crying out for an out an out winger since the days of John Barnes and Steve Heighway. I felt Albert Riera gave Liverpool more of a threat down the Left Hand side, and had a big part to play in the team that finished 2nd in 08/09, but he was sent out to Olympiakos after an alleged bust up with Benitez. Downing, for me is the out an out wideman Liverpool need, particularly with the Aerial ability Liverpool have in the box with Andy Carroll. Downing can cross fantastically well, and has the ability to beat his man consistently. At 26 years old, he is at his peak and would be available for a fee of around £15 million and would likely to be playing on the left hand side of a 3, in a potential 4-3-3 formation.

No players from outside England i have my doubts about that.
With the costs being touted for some of these players it seems like there is a lack of real talent.
I hope they do get Wickham as he could be a superstar.

  • cybersix says:

my 7 players would be :-

    1)Jordan Henderson(15M)
    2)Charlie Adam (11M)
    3)Stewart Downing(13M)
    4)Jose Enrique(9M)
    5)Juan Mata(20M)
    6)Mamadou Sakho(13M)
    7)Park Chu-Yong(7M) = 88M

    • shaunymo says:

Agree with some of what you say Cybersix.

More and more I think Mata (18m + Ayala with Pacheco on loan) is a must, with Park Chu Young (6m), Arda Turan (12m) and Leighton Baines (11m + Eccelston & Amoo) rounding out the transfers for the summer! If you get a CB, Wilson must go on loan and selling either Skrtel or Agger is also a must! Soto is good to have as a back up, even with Kelly an option and may be starting the development of Andre Wisdom is a possibility! Selling fringe players and those who don’t belong is key to having funds. Yes we can rely on Henry and Co’s money, but why have Poulsen (2m), Konchesky (2m), Jovanovic (4m), Cole (2m), Aquilani (13m), Jones (2m), Ngog (5m), Insua (4m-but I think he’s available on a free??)..Thats 36m in sales right there! That covers Henderson and Mata with the additional money to be used on Baines, P.C. Young and Turan!

  • Xile says:

why isn’t Mata on your list?

  • nigel says:

hope we can be a bit more ambitious than downing and adam. The only one on your list that i hope we get is wickham!

  • higgo says:

These would all be good signings as strength in depth is probably the most important factor needed to win the league, i would personally like to see a marquee signing aswell, these are all good players but none of them jump out at you or really get the adrenaline pumping, now santa carloza is a real talent and a realistic one, people are talking of us signing hazard and mata and sanchez, but these three players are the talk of world football at the moment, and im sure they can take there pick of any team in europe atm, between man city and chelsea,s 200k a week contracts and the lure of sunny barcalona and madrid, i dont think we,ve got any hope of signing any of them especially with no european football.

  • nigel says:

instead of adam, we could try for banega or defour. Instead of downing we could try for mata, vargas, shaqiri. Enrique is good but what about aly cissoko. Kyle walker looks very good at right back too. Centre back- cahill, sakho, rolando. Strikers- aguero, hulk, wickham. Attacking mid lucas(sao paulo), eriksen- ajax, ganso.

  • gerard says:

Liverpool is keen on British players to revive the old days when LFC rules with these attitudes and mentality. But a few skilful players of the like of Mata will bring creativity in their game. This is why I hope mata will sign for liverpool.

  • nigel honeyman says:

arda turan would fit just perfect

  • JackC LFC says:

i hope liverpool buy all these players and the prices we should pay to defently get them:

    IN
    1. Charlie Adam 14 mill
    2. Stewart Downing 15mill
    3. Jose Enrique 10mill
    4. Connor Wickham 12 mill
    5. Scott Dann 10mill
    6. Charles N’Zogbia 9mill

    Total- 70 million.

    YNWA King Kenny We Trust.

  • Benedict says:

Hender[done deal],adam, enrique, wickham and downing are needed desperately at anfield by me.

  • Andy H says:

Speculation, speculation speculation, does anyone on here really know who we are going for? No Kenny will have a big list of candidates but he won’t be held to ransom by anyone, look at Marveaux, does anyone think he’d have gone to Newcastle if we offered the same package? Not a cat in hell’s chance. The name missing on that list is Zapata who claims he’s very close to joining us, now players can lie but how much of a fool would he look if he didn’t join us.

  • Nash says:

Overpriced English players, compare Suarez n Carroll and their price tags! Max 3 English players(who lack skill) if LFC are serious!!!!

  • sam says:

if we sign downing, adam, enrique, henderson, scott dann, and wickham for the squad and not sign any other quality players we are not going to do anything, remember these remarks please….

  • Terror says:

Kyrigakos is staying for another year.

  • red says:

its all rumours flying around at this time of de window, try not to predict who is coming cos we dont know until der are signed, kenny is 1 of de best managers around and he knows who to bring in to get us back to de top without a shadow of doubt..

  • Ben says:

So sick of reading that list its untrue, maybe find something else to talk about until we know more about targets or imminent signings?

  • harley c says:

i want hazard in a liverpool and in no other shirt but in the epl if he dont sign with hazard he can piss off to another league

  • mozo says:

my own opinion i think if we don’t get players like Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, Antonio Cassano, Lucas, Wickham, Fenando Gago and Charlie Adams.Next season will just be a 50-50 race for lfc with no much competition compare to how other big clubs are boosting their squad. pls pls pls kenny, we need a trophy this coming season and we need quality players to help us achieve that.

  • Eric says:

5 of the players mentioned in the article are average British players who are clearly overrated and overpriced. If Liverpool are serious about getting back into the top four and winning the tile then they need to forget about players like Adam, Dann, Downing and Wickham. These guys are not cut for Liverpool and do not possess the quality needed to help Liverpool push on.
We do not need Adam as we already possess two top class players in his position in Meireles and Gerrard while we also have Lucas and Henderson in midfield. The only reason Adam is being targeted is because he had a good season at a rubbish Blackpool side filled with League One quality players.
We do not need Dann as he is average at his best. A clearly overrated English defender who is simply not Liverpool quality. If Kenny wants to strengthen his defence then he should look at top class foreign defenders instead of overrated and overpriced British guys.
Downing is not Liverpool quality and Aston Villa are demanding at least 15m which is ridiculous. He is worth half that price. The only reason Kenny is looking at him is because he is English. N’Zogbia is a much better player and is valued at 9m. Liverpool should forget about the average Downing and sign N’Zogbia instead.
Wickham scored 9 goals in the Championship last season which is hardly impressive. It’s ridiculous how Liverpool are now obsessed with average British guys and especially in this case, the price being touted is 10-12m for an 18 year-old kid who has never even played in the top flight before. Forget about this guy.
The only player who is good enough and will help Liverpool push forward in this article is N’Zogbia. The guy has been absolutely fantastic for the past 2 seasons and will offer a lot to Liverpool as he can cut in from the right and play as an out-and-out left winger. 10m for this guy is a bargain.
I don’t even agree on getting Enrique for 9-10m. There are better alternatives out there such as Cissokho and Baines, both who are top class left backs, available at reasonable prices.
Liverpool simply need to forget about the average British players in Adam, Dann, Downing and Wickham who are all overrated and overpriced. If Liverpool are to stand any chance of getting back into the top four and winning the title, they should focus on bringing in top foreign talent.

  • dj says:

who actually knows very much abou cassano? this guy is rubbish and is only looking for another pay day. he’s been around a bit and is mentally unstable.

i love the way some so called fans only mention him after they see it in the red tops or on some websites. poor!

players we should bring in mata, zapata, enrique or clichy, gago or adams and the young lad wickham.

if downing was that good why hasn.t he been snapped up by the other big teams in th epl, leave him where he is!

    • shubbankar says:

Yes, great thinking ……. we should go for a player after he has been snapped up by someone , right !!!! huh !!!!

Downing was in the same league in which the likes of Malouda, Young etc. played ….. still did better than them ……

Consider this – 10 crosses a game ….. at Liverpool we would offer him atleast 10% more possession than Villa do ….. that means 11 crosses a game perhaps ….. but who is to say that he will have a good season again …. now consider that he has half the season he has had in 2010-11 , roughly 6 crosses a game…… 12 in 2 …… out of these 12 , even if he gets 2 (16% – considering minimal for your arguments sake) good crosses in ….. I would bank our team to convert 1 out of each set of …… either by giving him a direct assist or by getting the second ball ….. that is 19 goals he would be contributing in through the league season , add to that 5 or 6 that he would himslef score given the chances Suarez and Gerrard and our fullbacks would make for everyone …… that is 25 goals minimum …… want to say something further …. !!!! stats from another league don’t give you a guarantee that the player would fare the same in the EPL, plus downing hardly had stats inferior to any in other european leagues
