Three Centre Back Targets: Which One Would You Buy?

Image for Three Centre Back Targets: Which One Would You Buy?

With Liverpool moving their attentions away from Blackburn Rovers’ Phil Jones, the Reds have been reportedly scouting other centre back targets. The three listed below have all been reported as potential transfers. Which one would you pick?

Scott Dann – The Liverpool born centre half has been the most hotly tipped to move Anfield after the Reds missed out on Phil Jones to Manchester United. At 24 years of age, Dann is a few years older than the other 2 centre backs on this list but has already demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level in the Premier League.

In the 2009/10 campaign Dann struck up a strong partnership with Roger Johnson at the centre of Birmingham City’s defence, and managed to assist the club to a 9th place finish in their first season back in the top flight and to an unbeaten home record. A hamstring injury this January though however meant he wasn’t able to help arrest the Blues’ slide to the Championship, and many have cited the player’s absence for the team’s relegation.

Dejan Lovren – At only 21, the Croatian International would certainly fit in to FSG policy of bringing in young, talented players, and Lovren has been tipped for great things in his native Croatia.

Lovren can play at right back, although he prefers to play at centre half, and is described as being a good tackler, with a fair amount of pace, as well decent aerial ability. He started out life in the Karlovac youth setup before moving to Dinamo Zagreb. He then spent two seasons out on loan at Inter Zapresic before returning to Dinamo for the 2008/09 campaign. He became a first team regular and then was subject to interest from Lyon in the January 2010 transfer window. He signed a four and half year contract, after signing for €10m, and has since become a first team player.

Mamadou Sakho – Already Paris Saint-Germain’s captain at the age of 21, the Frenchman looks to have a big future ahead of him. Primarily a centre back, he has played on occasion at left back, and he is known for his leadership abilities and hard working attitude.

The Frenchman is also blessed with a good deal of pace and has great tackling abilities. In addition he is a tactically astute centre half who has shown maturity beyond his years with his abilities to organise the backline. His talent has been demonstrated by his breakthrough into the French national team at the start of last season, making his full debut against England alongside Philippe Mexes. Sakho now has 4 caps to his name and is tipped to have a long stay in France’s international side. He finished 4th in Ligue One with his PSG last season.

  • Shaun says:

Dann…He’s scouse and young (even looks like Stevie a bit and has the growl of Carra!), A bit slow at times and loses footing, but I’m 110% guaranteed he’ll raise his game playing for his boyhood club, plus he’ll be more inclined to learned from Kenny and Co. because he’s always been aware of the significance of King Kenny and what he brings to the club!

    • Jay Wright says:

a bit slow and clumsy but buy him because he will try hard… And this is the type of signing that you think would elevate LFC back amongst the elite??

      • Shaun says:

I know what you’re saying Jay, but didn’t United let Pique go and look at his current track record! I’m not sure why we keep throwing out the bit names when there are good young players waiting for a chance to shine! If we go out there and buy every Tom, Dick or Harry, how will our Coady’s, Wisdom’s, Danny Wilson’s ever get a chance in the back line!??? I’m a regular at youth matches and Reserve games with my mates and to support them by bringing in a Kjaaer, Cahill, Sakho, Lovren would really “stump” the growth of these youngsters! If you are all true Liverpool fans you may bite your lip and grind your teeth when you see the likes of Joe Cole, Shelvey, and others come in and no Pacheco in the lineup! I’ve supported this kid for a long time, just like Nemeth, Dalle Valle and where are they now! Dissapointing!! Why can’t lads like Dann make a difference? Are you all “hyped” up on the big names, like Honda, Hazard, Phil Jones!! Seems that most of you are! Everyone said LFC was a week team at xmas time. Well Kenny/Clarke showed all the so called “pundits” otherwise! Dann for 6-7 million is worth it! Look at his Optra Stats before you all put the Scouser down!!! and another thing! He’s worth more than Agger right now..why you ask?? Just ask Agger how many games he’s played since at LFC and when we’ll see him injured once again!!!

        • Jay Wright says:

You’re getting the argument mixed up there Shaun – Dann may be a scouser, but he’s not our Scouser and as such we’d have to pay good money to bring him in at the expense of our own young centrebacks, just as if we were buying a Sakho, Kjaer, Cahill etc. Man U let Pique go because they couldn’t give him the games that he needed with Ferdinand and Vidic ahead of him. We already have Kelly in the same position (as well as Wilson, Wisdom, Ayala etc) and you want to spend big money on a player of the same age as them that hasn’t conclusively proven that he’s any better than them.

If the player is coming from our reserves than you can make more of an allowance for a lower level of quality initially, but there is no point in spending good money on a backup calibre player just because he is scouse.

  • Janusz says:

Sakho, without a shadow of doubt. The man is destined for superstardom, and makes Jones’ talent look very average.

He’s got everything a complete centre half should have. Dann lacks a fair share in pace and strength, compared to Sakho, and he’s (Dann) still 3 years older than Sakho..

Would be great to have a scouser and a fan in the club, but not at every cost. Sakho is far too big of a talent to overlook in favour of Dann.

    1. Sakho
    2. Dann
    3. Lovren

    • Nigel says:

agree with you pal… sakho is already captain of one of the biggest teams in France. That speaks volumes for the guy. It my be easier given LFC’S situation of no european football to snare Dann though. To be honest we need someone to take over the reigns from carragher in the years to come AND agger is so injury prone, that we prob need two defenders in the long run? We all rate Agger, but he doesn’t play enough – it’s a shame cos he is so composed on the ball, unlike Skrtel.

    • me says:

totally agree with the order as well. i don’t know who wouldn’t! but sakho will cost far more. dann is decent and in the league below, should be far cheaper.

  • GG says:

Now PSG have got new owners, Sakho will not come. Lovren is an excellent ball-playing CB so I will go for him. Dann is my 3rd choice!

  • Lee says:

    Got to be Sakho!

Never heard of Lovren and Dann is crap.

What about the wingers Kenny? You’re about to miss out on Young to United again!!

  • Nigel says:

    Cahill?

  • Towson Tom says:

Both Dann and Sakho would be worth considering, and I do mean BOTH, afterall we can’t expect Carragher to go on forever and Skrtel isnt the greatest but I would keep him and Kelly(great potential). The prem is all about quality strength in depth – so – if we have the cash…

  • Lee says:

    FAO Shaun.
Almost forgot to mention what a ridiculous post you made. You never ever transfer a player into our team simply because he is scouse. What crap!!

    • Shaun says:

Lee Lee Lee! Doesn’t it feel good cheering your song “We all dream of a team of Carraghers”…or shout and feel the pours raise when our beloved Stevie G scores??? I THINK SO! I truly think it should be mandatory to have locals in every team! That gives us more to cheer on! How would you feel being a Chelsea fan?? Not one player came through the ranks at chelsea nor are any of them Chelsea fans growing up! At least United have that! You may say what you may, but I would like a few scousers in the lineup every so often! or home grown like the Suso’s, Pacheco’s, Wisdom’s, Silva’s, Coady’s of our world! And to be honest, What does Agger bring to the plate??? Skrtel does more!..Then the comment becomes “he’s our best defender you twat!”…Then I ask “When??? for 5 or 6 games a season!!!”…That annoys me and I’d go for both Baines and Dann! Kenny will get the best out of them! and for resonable prices!

      • Lee says:

I just want players that have good quality and want to play for the club.

Obviously it would be nice to have english players (don’t care if scouse or not) but I wouldn’t let it distort/bias my judgement.

If Sakho was valued at 15mill and Dann at 10mill, I would go for Sakho every time because he is much the better player.

I want us to win at the end of the day!

  • john says:

Pieters has more pace and agility than ever and can play well on the left as Lovran. of the list that I like is Sakho

  • Andy H says:

I can’t comment on the Croatian lad I’ve never seen him play, I like Sakho but will he come? I mean Arsenal are reportedly interested so the odds favour them. I like Dann, he’s been the better of a strong partnership and had he been fit Birmingham would not have gone down. At £10 million he represents better value than Cahill at £18 million and actually Lee if we are interested in 2 players and they are of similiar ability I’d go for the scouser every single time. He’d understand the club better and would settle in as of right which can’t always be said of non scousers.

    • Shaun says:

      Well said Mate!

    • Lee says:

I’d go for an English player too if they were of similar quality but this isn’t the case here.

Dann is average at best and Sakho would piss all over him in defending terms as would many others.

  • soebi says:

    sakho…..sakho….sakho…..and then Scott Dann

  • Jay Wright says:

I don’t know who Lovren is and don’t understand all the hype about Scott Dann. I’d much prefer that we just move Kelly into his prefered position in central defence than spend money on another young centreback (thereby also saving a lot of money for the pacey wingers/widemen/wideforwards that have to be a priority for this team), but at this point Sakho would be the only choice out of that list for me.

    • Lee says:

Dann is from Liverpool, that’s it. That is the only reason people want him.

It’s a similar reason for wanting Arda Turan, he mentions he wants to come and suddenly he’s the best winger in the world! Fickle reds fans!

  • a finnigan says:

why not buy sakho and dann but sakho can play on the left but is dann as good as martin kelly and a left back 1st is needed scousers are better cos they know ther score kick and butt rooney and torres
