Why Over Spending Should NOT Be Seen As A Problem

Jordan Henderson and Connor Wickham are set to cost Liverpool Football Club a reported (must be stated these are reports rather than facts) 30 million in total. Since these reports there has been rumblings and strong murmurs of discontent amongst Liverpool fans not regarding the players being signed but the extensive price tag attached to them.

This brings about quite a stark contrast in the attitudes of these Liverpool fans between this summer and last. This time last summer we had just endured an awful season on the field despite being regarded by many as title favourites. The summer was supposed to be the time when we finally invested heavily in order to quickly rid the club of the disappointment given from a seventh place finish and challenge for the title again. That never happened. Instead we were looking for Bosman signings or the cheapest possible signings seemingly content with where the club was positioned. Fans were left disillusioned at the lack of money being spent and this quickly lead to protests as the fans called on the two American cowboys to leave.

Twelve months on and Liverpool Football Club is in a completely different position. The club endured another poor season, this time finishing sixth, but despite this there is a whole different feel to the place. The atmosphere engulfing the club is as positive and as optimistic as we have known for quite awhile. The King has returned to his throne, the players are happier and are playing better than ever and we actually have American owners who are willing to spend, Alleluia!

Fair article. I wouldn’t look at forums to guage Liverpool fans reactions though. On most fora it appears the majority of posts will be negative. Simply it is the disgruntled ones that tend to feel the need to post the most, but simply the fact they have an axe to grind does not make them representative of the millions of Liverpool fans. As regards myself I am more than happy to let Kenny do his job and lets just see what this rollercoaster game has in store for us next year 🙂

Spot on if Kenny thinks a player is worth £10 million or whatever then that’s good enough for me. The owners, who some have slaughtered for not doing anything unreal as it seems, have made it clear they want 2 things a younger squad, which will cost, and a reduction of the wage bill, which means the end for Cole, Poulsen, Jones et al. They are gambling on paying fees on the talent that Kenny and Damien Comoli have identified unlike the previous owners. I always remember what the old Swedish defender Bjorlund said when he turned Rangers down in the early 1990’s “If you pay peanuts you get monkeys” so the naysayers should either get onboard or get lost.

In terms of transfers, Liverpool are becoming more of a laughing stock than anything. Some of you are simply ignoring the reality, deciding to trust Kenny no matter what. Some so called fans still think that Carroll is worth 35m and Henderson is worth the quoted 20m. These players might be promising but they are simply over hyped by the British media, clearly overrated and no doubt overpriced. Some of you are saying that we should not be judging Carroll yet since he was signed injured but then if that’s the case then why didn’t Kenny and Comolli wait until the summer to look for another striker, a possibly cheaper and better alternative to Carroll? The price for Henderson is just as ludicrous. There are cheaper and better alternatives in foreign leagues but because of Kenny and Comolli clearly cannot look beyond the Premier League for young talent and instead, are focusing on targeting overpriced and overrated British players. 55m for average English players in Carroll and Henderson is an absolute joke.

I don’t think KK would sanction paying so much just because of media hype!

Its more of a risk brining in young foreign talant as it’s much more of an ordeal for them to move countries at 18-21 years and therefore tend to take much longer to settle.

Young British players are expensive but don’t have to adapt to the culture. British spine, preferably scouse, plus key foreign players = success. My prediction of a team.
    Reina
    Kelly Carragher Skrtel Enrique
    Lucas Adam
    Henderson. Gerrard. Mirieles
    Carroll. Suarez
    Subs:
    Doni, Marveux, Kuyt, spearing, Johnson.

    • Swilliams says:

That would be a brilliant team, I’m sure we’d win almost every game seeing as you’ve put a Twelve man team out there!

    • mepa007 says:

You want a start XII. Adam has no room in our team.

FAO Eric (the moron) et al.

Why is it that we buy 2 youngsters (who happen to be England internationals) for large sums of money and we’re a laughing stock and the papers start saying we paid over the odds?

United spent a fortune to bring Rooney in as a teenager and nobody mentioned a thing. The same with Ferdinand and Jones and neither of those were full internationals at the time.

Seems to me like some people are a little annoyed that the sleeping giant of english football did not go into administration and now have money to spend.

As long as we complement the youngsters with some quality more experienced players (like Mata rather than Downing) then I don’t have a problem at all and nor will any other Liverpool fan

If Henderson was good enough for Kenny and Alex Ferguson to be competing for his signature and good enough to have gained an England cap by the age of 20 in one of Englands most competitive central midfields for years oh and some of the best passing stats in the league last season…..I guess I don’t mind if he cost 16 million as later revised sources are quoting!
