Another deal done, but how many more to go?

With Alexander Doni arriving from Roma to play as backup goalkeeper to Pepe Reina next season, and the arrival of Stewart Downing at the club imminent, the question becomes how many more deals will Liverpool make this summer.

I think a lot will depend on how many players the Reds manage to offload during the summer, and therefore reduce the wage bill significantly. If Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen, Milan Jovanovic, Nabil El Zhar, David Ngog, Philipp Degen and one of Raul Meireles or Alberto Aquilani, are offloaded then there maybe a few more than people are expecting.

If they are not shipped out as quickly as most Reds fans would like though, I doubt there will be too many more coming through the door this transfer window. Most would feel that left back, centre half and a striker would be the primary areas to strengthen, but currently it maybe the case the Reds will only be looking at one of these positions.

The most obvious is of course left back. With Paul Konchesky departing the club for Leicester City, and the uncertainty still surrounding Emiliano Insua’s future, Damien Comolli is no doubt making it his top priority, after sealing the signature of Downing, to find a solution to Liverpool’s troubled left back position.

The lack of options in this area, not just in the Premier League but around Europe too, is quite startling though. The five best left back performers in the league last season were probably, Leighton Baines, Jose Enrique, Patrice Evra, Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy. Out of them, Clichy (who was a Liverpool target) moved to Man City while Cole and Evra are at top 4 clubs, leaving us with Jose Enrique and Leighton Baines.

Indeed we seem to be buying good but not top class players. Would it be enough to catch up with the top four who though better than us last season are still strengthening with top class players. Also vilaa and spurs bought good/average british players but how did they go .

only play top 4 sides six times a season. kk is signing guys to beat all the other sides in the league. if we go 3-5-2 in the big games we’ll be fine. really happy with who we’ve signed so far.

  • marcelo from real madrid. Very impressive going forward AND defending. Plus real madrid signing coentro we could get him on the cheap ( 10-15 million pounds)

Mourinho would be insane to let Marcelo go. With the exception of Ronaldo, he is their best player. I ought to know – I saw at least thirty to thirty-five of their games last season. If Kenny can get him he can walk on water.

  • Gerrardious says:

he’s an explosive fullback, very agile n fast, but vile most attacking fullbacks, his defensive abilities are questionable.
    He’ll be a coup though

We need a back up striker not necessary because NGOG might be leaving but because we can build a team around carrol.

I hope he(carrol) start perfoming before fans start getting on his back.
