His Best Years Are Still Ahead Of Him

|

There were times last season though, especially near the start of the campaign, where these defensive lapses were becoming more of a problem for the team. Roy Hodgson publicly criticised Johnson, and it seemed to unsettle the England international to the point where it was rumoured that he was close to leaving the club. He also learned Spanish during this period increasing speculation about his future.

As with the club itself, Johnson’s season turned around with the appointment of Kenny Dalglish. To those who question Johnson’s ability to defend, you only have to look at the amount of solid defensive displays with Johnson playing a left back, to know Glen does have the ability to defend. Johnson, in my opinion, is very much a confidence player, and Dalglish has the ideal man management skills to get the best out of him. In addition, the defensive organisation instilled by Steve Clarke will have certainly helped Glen, and it must be said that playing at left back may have helped in the development of the defensive side of his game too, as he ventured forward far less when being played out of position.

At 26, as Comolli said, his peak years are still ahead of him, and I have no doubt that Glen Johnson, bar perhaps a few defensive lapses, will be an integral part of Kenny Dalglish’s side. Martin Kelly and John Flanagan will certainly keep him on his toes though.
