So why is this left back available to Liverpool for just €9M?

Lyon left back Aly Cissokho has been linked with a move to Liverpool in France Football Magazine over the last week. The article stated that Cissokho was more than likely going to Manchester City this summer, but after City signed Clichy ahead of Liverpool, Cissokho was left without a prospective buyer. The report then goes on to state that as both Cissokho is looking for a new club, and Liverpool a left back, the two are the perfect fit. Liverpool have enquired about the player, according to France Football, but no bid has yet been made. The article then states that Cissokho is available for €9million, and new Lyon manager Remi Garde raised speculation even further this week by stating to L’Equipe:

“Aly is an important player to us. But if an offer can match the chairman’s plans, he could be likely to leave.”

Lyon paid Porto €15million back in June 2009 for the player, and he performed very well in his first season at the club. So why is he now available for €9m?

There are three factors as to why Cissokho is now available for such a fee. Firstly, he suffered a drop in form last season as Lyon struggled in Ligue One. His performances led to fans questioning his attitude and he was asked about his form at a training session by a supporter. The fan asked:

“Can I at least question your performances?”

Cissokho replied:

“And your mother? Do I question your mother?”

(The footage in French can be found here). Needless to say this incident did not go down too well with Lyon’s supporters, and ever since he has had a fractious relationship with the French club’s fans.

Subsequently then, although still considered an important player for the team, as Remi Garde states, he is no longer indispensable as he was during his excellent 2009/10 season. With President Jean-Michel Aulas also admitting that the club must sell some players before they can buy any in this transfer window, it means Cissokho could be sold for less he was bought just over two years ago.

At 23 years of age, Cissokho certainly fits FSG’s youth policy, and in addition he is also very athletic, quick and strong which makes him an ideal full back for the Premier League. There are questions about his defensive abilities but with the dearth of left back options in Europe at the moment, €9million would be an absolute steal in my opinion, for a player who got his first cap for France last season.

His attitude could be a problem though if his comments to the Lyon fan are anything to go by, but he is young and still learning, and Kenny Dalglish would be an ideal man to get him back on track.

Good player better then Enrique and at a good price.

A couple of season’s ago AC Milan tried signing him and he had a medical which he failed because of a problem with his teeth which apparantly will effect his spine later in his career or life. However he did pass a medical a day later and Milan wanted the price lowered but Lyon refused so he didn’t sign, maybe it was all a ploy just to lower his price, but if you type “Aly Cissokho teeth” in google you can read all about it there……YNWA

If we can get Cissokho, Sakho and Mata, then we should be getting ready to drink from the EPL cup next season

  • CB says:

The bits about questioning some mother and spine damaging teeth make for a very interesting player. Very interesting indeed. May the new Diouf please stand up?

Niania grow up please. We are getting in players with Premier League experience which is exactly what we need to get back into the top 4. We don’t have time to give big signings from Europe a season or 2 to settle in. We need to get back into the top 4 first and then move on up. Show your faith and support to the club. YNWA

Imran, would ? please stop these erroneous believe that its only players that are bought from EPL teams that make an impact in their first seasons! Torres came from Spain and was a big hit for us instantly, Crouch is English and came from an EPL team, he struggles for matches to score his first goal(even missing a pen), Bellamy came from an EPL team and never settled, Robbie Keane came from Tottenham and never settled, Suarez came from Holland has never looked back after scoring on his debut. Who settled in faster Berbatov who went to Man ? and took 3 seasons to look a decent striker or Chicharito who came from America and settled in well? Its all about the player and some other factors! Where the player comes from doesn’t have over bearing effect as long d player is adaptable to circumstances.

Loool! *erroneous beliefs, *crouch struggled! Typing with a ????? could be funny, pardon ma errors.

  • GG says:

Focus on quality and stop creating issues out of nothing! He is a quality player and that is all that matters! We don’t know the context in which that exchange took place. Please, we should be better than that!!!!

  • Samba anfield says:

    Get Bastos and Rodalega.

  • Zhenyamos says:

I don’t think we need players with this type of attitude. Those who say this doesn’t matter are just hoping we get him because they’re desperate for us to get a quality left back and I believe we will. But we must get players who also synchronize with the rest of the squad, the staff, and of course the fans, and not someone who’s liable to spit on the club. And of course I think Kenny is trying to bring in Premier League players and not those playing abroad.

I think there is more to it than just his attitude. Apparently they are struggling abit financially, mainly because they have spent around 60-70 million Euros over the past 2-3 seasons with nothing to show for it. I agree this would be an absolute steal and would be a far better addition than Enrique, who in my opinion, is nothing but average defensively and going forward and would cost 5 or 6 million more. I don’t understand why Kenny is going after the likes of Downing and other Premier league players. The ones we are after cost 2/3 times there actual price and are again, distinctly average at best. Just because they have Prem experience, doesnt mean they have set the league alight and at £15 mill for Enrique and £20 million for a 26/27 year old Downing I would want far more for my money than just average. We need pace, the ability to take on a player and find passes English players like Downing can’t see. We’ve constantly struggled agaisnt the likes of Stoke ect because we havent got players that are quick going forward, or have a quick enough thought process or passing ability in short spaces. We need technique and pace, both things the likes of Cissokho and Mata have and Downing and Enrique don’t.

  • i don’t know why some lfc fans don’t believe on KD signing. What i think is aly cissokho his young, skillful, stronge, artletic and a minded player and he fit FSG programe so let support him when he sign for us.

    • Andy says:

If you’ve read the posts above, we would LOVE Cissokho to join. We just don’t want the extremely average Downing and especially for £20 million
