The Tuesday Transfer Column – Who’s leaving the Reds?

|

Peter Gulacsi – A loan move beckons for talented young goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. Following the announcement that Hull would play a friendly against Liverpool at the KC Stadium on Saturday July 23, online speculation had grown suggesting that the friendly was part of a package designed to bring an LFC star to the Tigers in time for the start of the new campaign,

A report by the Hull & East Riding Daily (01/07/11) clarified Hull‘s position on the matter. Their Director of football operations Adam Pearson confirming that the clash was indeed linked to Hull’s capture of a player, although Pearson refused to identify the star in question, stating “it is tied up to a signing, but I’ve no comment to make about the player involved.”

Pearson however, also confirmed that Hull were chasing a goalkeeper – “We’re looking at a number of options regarding our goalkeepers. It will all become clear in the next week to 10 days.”

The Daily Star (01/07/11) has now reported that the 21 year old Hungarian goalkeeper will indeed join Hull on a season long loan. The story was carried by various other news media including Live4Liverpool (01/07/11).

Gulasci has been expected to leave on loan this season, as such the news is not a major surprise, his management agency had previously stated on the matter (LFC.tv 02/06/11) that

“The most likely possibility is that Peter will spend the season at another club.”

That any move would be a loan deal, and not a permanent one was also made clear. The Hungarian’s management had also added that they were not surprised that there has been a lot of interest in the young goalkeeper:

“We’re not surprised [in the interest] because Peter has been considered as one of the best of his age in international football. We can’t say which clubs are interested but we can say that seven teams indicated that they will travel to France in order to watch him live. These clubs are from England, Germany, Holland and Belgium. Of course the final decision will be made by Liverpool. But we’re not worried about this as his career has been managed very gently. They see his values and also his high potential.” Liverpool Echo (02/06/11)

The Hull & East Riding Daily have also re-iterated their stance that Gulacsi is signing (02/07/11) although their has been no official announcement yet. LFC may be delaying on an official announcement until a backup to Pepe Reina is signed, with reports that the deal for Roma’s Alexandre Doni may be reconsidering his decision to turn down a move to Anfield. Watch this space, an announcement should be made soon.

Brad Jones SportsNewsIreland (02/07/11) reports that Derby are showing an interest in the Aussie goalkeeper. The report also claims that Roma’s Doni will join as a replacement, citing Italian newspaper Il Messagero as a source. The report also claims that the Gulacsi to Hull loan deal has been arranged.

Chris Mavinga – A report on talkSPORT (04/06/07) claims that defender Chris Mavinga, who can play at left-back or in central defence, will be allowed to leave the club for around £750,000, with Rennes and Villarreal both interested. Mavinga moved to Genk on a six-month loan deal back in December and talkSPORT claimed last month that the Belgian club were keen on making the move permanent.

The report claims that Kenny Dalglish is open to selling the player, and that Mavinga is keen to leave Anfield. The report claims there are no shortage of takers for the 20-year-old, who was part of the French side which won the European U19’s Football Championship in 2010. Mavinga can play at left-back or in central defence.

Whether this report has much merit remains to be seen – there is little of substance to back up the claims made by talkSPORT. That there would be interest in the youngster is unsurprising, but whether LFC have given the ok on any deal is not clear. As always we will keep you posted on any more developments as they occur.

That’s all the rumours on potential outgoings from the club this week, a week that taught us that the world of online transfer rumours – although full of nonsense, madness and outright lies, can sometimes yield stories with an element of truth to them.

Reports of the departure of Sammy Lee had broken and been widely established online for almost 48hrs before LFC made a statement on the matter. The departure of Gulacsi also seems to be as good as complete, yet Liverpool have not made any announcement on that matter either. The promotion of Steve Clarke to assistant manager has been mooted widely on many sites, as it seems to be a logical contributing factor to Sammy Lee’s leaving the club. That Kevin Keen was yesterday (04/07/11) appointed as a first team coach further reinforces this view..

Many fans have been frustrated by the silence from Anfield this summer, but they must be reminded that there are two months left in the transfer window, and that there is lots of time for movement yet. Those who have been reading this column over the last few weeks will have noticed that there has been a distinct lack of interest in a number of highly paid LFC fringe-players thus far in the window. Rumours relating to transfers of the likes of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen and Philipp Degan to name a few have been almost non-existent, and if reports are to believed – this inability to offload fringe players is hampering LFC’s spending power thus far.

If the pace at which LFC are keeping fans up to date with announcements is an indicator of how the club intends to conduct it’s business this summer – do not be surprised if negotiations for players and/or staff turn out to be rather protracted, drawn-out affairs this summer. Again, we hope you enjoyed reading this edition of the TTC. Be sure to check back here each Tuesday for the weekly review of transfer speculation on outgoing players at LFC. By next Tuesday (12/07/11) – there may be more concrete developments to report as the squad takes shape for next season.

* Sorry folks, but this is an additional note. Due to the appointment of Kelvin MacKenzie as a columnist by the Daily Mail, this column – or it’s author will no longer cite as a source or contain any work, reports, rumours or content from the Daily Mail for as long as this man is in their employment.

MacKenzie’s appointment was reported in The Guardian (30/06/11) in an article which ran with the sub-heading “Former S*n editor and ‘rather disgraceful’ columnist is to end long association with red-top to move to the Daily Mail”.

The report added that “In 1989 MacKenzie published a notorious front page S*n splash making false allegations about the behaviour of Liverpool FC fans at the Hillsborough stadium disaster. The paper, and MacKenzie, subsequently apologised – although the former editor appeared to backtrack on this at a private lunch in 2006” (The Guardian 30/06/11)

Then [S*n] editor MacKenzie had chosen to lead on 19 April 1989 [following the Hillsborough disaster] with a story headlined “The Truth” that was anything but. In it, quoting unnamed police sources and a Tory MP, it claimed drunken Liverpool fans urinated on and picked the pockets of the dead, hampered rescue efforts and attacked policemen.” (The Guardian 18/04/09) It remains to be seen if Kenny Dalglish, a columnist for the Daily Mail, will remain at the paper.

Any fans unaware of this issue should get in the know. This post at Anfield Road is a good starting point, the article gives further links to the issues involved.

Such gutter journalism, wherever it may be – should forever be confronted.

Don’t buy the S*n. Don’t buy the Daily M**l. MacKenzie out.
