POLL – Would you welcome back Craig Bellamy to the club?

With nearly every newspaper now stating that Liverpool are interested in Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy, I think it can be assumed that there is at least some interest on the part of the Reds in the 32 year old.

Although Bellamy is 32, I believe he still has something to offer at the top level in Premier League. During his first spell at the club in the 2006/07 season, Bellamy certainly didn’t set the world alight but there is no doubting the Welsh international has ability.

In fact, under Mark Hughes at both Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City, the striker looked a very good player in my opinion. Especially at City, his pace, close ball control and capability of scoring some spectacular goals showed he could match the levels of the best players in the Premier League, but the question for me is, after being frozen at Man City, and playing a season in the Championship with Cardiff City, does he still have the ability to replicate such form?

There will be those that say that at 32 years of age, the odds of him playing up to those past levels would be unlikely, and considering the lucrative contract the Welsh star may ask for, FSG may not sanction such a deal anyway.

A lot seems to hinge though on whether Roberto Mancini and Manchester City are willing to let Bellamy go on a free transfer. If they agree to a compensation deal to release him on a free transfer, then the Reds would be free to talk to the Welsh international. If the Reds offer a one year deal, and get the player for free, it seems only a small risk to bring in a player who has a lot of ability.

On top of his on field ability though, any prospective club must consider his off field antics. Will he disrupt the team spirit at the club? No one needs reminding what happened when Bellamy was last at the club, swinging a golf club at John Arne Riise.

Even those managers who have fallen out with Bellamy though, such as Graeme Souness, have said that Bellamy is someone who demands the utmost effort from his team mates, as well as from himself. Something that manager Kenny Dalglish would identify with. In any case, I doubt Craig would be stupid enough to get into a slanging match with King Kenny. He knows there would be only one winner and he would depart from the club as quickly as he’d arrive.

Still, it would be a concern, especially with the past history of our record £35million signing Andy Carroll. Bellamy’s introduction into the squad mix would be a risk, and it would have to be something King Kenny would have to be 100% sure about before moving for the 32 year old.

just don’t think you can go back to go forward! it worked for rushie because he only left for a season and in fairness, he was a different class! craig hardly set the place alight the first time! john henry has not been afraid to spend, so i would urge him to dig that little bit deeper and try for the likes of Higuain or Benzema if possible.
also, whether we buy coates or not, i would still hijack arsenals move for cahill

trouble maker, high wages, doesnt score enough, injury prone, so why sign him

  • Kevin says:

Good business. If we can ship out Cole, Poulsen & Ngog along with Aquilani, Jovanavic and El Zhar we’ll have a more competitive squad. With Gerrard coming back I can see us having more balance and options on the right hand side. I think we’ll see Dirk Kuyt more up front this year and Kenny will be hoping him and Bellamy can provide good quality competition to keep Carroll and Suarez on their toes. If the Bellamy & Coates arrive and the trio I mentioned above leave I’ll be a happy camper.

  • Davie says:

Yes,take him back n get shot of Ngog. Unless Kenny has another striker lined up Bellamy is a decent player even at 32. We need another striker simple as.

  • cloudno44 says:

His reported 90K wages sounds way too much for a backup striker. If we can get him with nominal transfer fee and with a wage around 50-60K it might be a good deal. (And get rid of a player with a high wage bill, Joe Cole)

  • Chambers says:

It would be a complete and utter waste of time , space and money. That said it’s just about right for people who dump a world class talent like Aquilani! Exxpect him next week at £100K a week or more then he can start fights with Carroll. They will enjoy themselves…

  • Col says:

Surely Santa Cruz would be a better option?

  • JJ says:

I think he is the best free transfer available and if we offer him a two year deal we can consider long term striker targets while they develop rather than just rushing in and buying one know. Bellamy will provide cover for the likes of Suarez,Carroll and Kuyt up front but I believe Bellamy is most dangerous when playing from the left or right wing and he could even push for a starting place. My starting 11 would be the 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 formation Liverpool are currently using with Reina-Johnson-Carragher-Agger-Enrique-Bellamy-Gerrard-Lucas-Downing-Suarez-Carroll and with the squad we have Meireles,Skrtel,Kuyt,Adam,Kelly,Henderson,Coates,Spearing,Aurelio,Doni, plus some very promising youngsters coming through Robinson,Sterling,Coady,Flanagan,Suso,Morgan,Wilson,Shelvey,Bueno Liverpool are looking stronger and stronger the future looks very bright

it used to be cahill and scot dann rumour before coates came out of the blue. If ngog is leaving truly then something is up kk sleves

  • Jaz Kooner says:

Please, please let it be a resounding NO…..too much of a liability and on top of that he is too old……does not tie into what the current management structure is aiming for !!!!

  • ALFonZo!! says:

A gud quality striker, offered for free. what more do v need?
    Would be alright under KD.

  • thekopite says:

too old and he’s a liability, bring in rodallega and cahill

  • redhed17 says:

He’s been a good quality player, but anyone who raises a golf club to a team mate can’t be trusted not to do something similar again. At the moment, everyone seems to be moving together and are united, you want someone who can enhance that, not potentially mess that up. If they let Ngog go, which seems likely after the Bolton match, then we need a striker (or two), with just Carroll, Kuyt and Suarez the strikers available. Bellamy is the cheap quality option, but I’d rather not have that type of person at the club. I’d rather not win than compromise on principals. There is not much of that in football though sadly. 🙁

  • Shaun says:

Rubbish deal!! Chelsea doesn’t have space for Daniel Sturridge, so spend the money and get him, better yet, forget the striker as Kuyt, Suarez and Carroll with a youngster (too bad Dani boy is gone for the year) such as Morgan or even Ngoo as a possible last replacment sub! Even Maxi could play up front as an option! Forget Bellamy, he’s a s!#t disturber
