With reports suggesting that Liverpool are closing in on Newcastle left back Jose Enrique (although the Liverpool Echo state a transfer fee has yet to be agreed), I take a look back at the Spaniard’s career so far.

Full name Jose Enrique Sanchez Diaz, he was known for his tremendous speed from a very young age, and he had to make a difficult choice between football and Athletics. At the age of 7, he became a member of the Benimaclet running club in Valencia, and was tipped as having a bright future in Athletics. At 16, he either had the opportunity of signing a youth scholarship at Levante or representing Spain at various Athletic youth championships, but Enrique opted to embark on a football career.

At Levante, he progressed through the club’s youth ranks in the early Noughties before beginning to feature for the club’s B side in the 2004/05 campaign. He however never played a match for the club’s senior team as he was bought by rivals Valencia in 2005. He was immediately shipped out on loan to Celta Vigo where he made his first senior appearances in the 2005/06 season.

After impressing on his loan spell, La Liga side Villarreal decided to purchase the youngster for Valencia and he went on to play 25 matches for the Spanish side in 2006/07. Yet again though, he didn’t spend more than a year at the club before Newcastle United approached Villarreal to bring him to Tyneside.

Manager Sam Allardyce saw the potential in Enrique and beat off a number of other Premier League clubs to seal a £6.3million move and a five year contract for the player. Still young, Enrique needed time to adapt to the style of the Premier League, and although he did feature in the majority of league matches in both the 2007/08 and 2008/09 campaigns, he didn’t always convince, and when the club were relegated, he wasn’t part of the exodus of player’s from the club.

Personally he’d possibly be the best signing yous have made all summer if you think about it with him in your only a center half away from being a pertencile league champion contender ima newcastle fan and I’d hate to see him go but if his heart isn’t in it then I (or shud I say mikes bank) would prefere the 8 mill
