Aldridge: “He looked out of his depth”

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that Martin Skrtel shouldn’t have started at right back. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo:

“I can see why Kenny decided to start with Skrtel over someone like John Flanagan. He has experience and strength, but to me he just isn’t a right-back, and he was horribly exposed by Bale. I don’t like to single individuals out, but he looked out of his depth there. He lunges in at the best of times, but against Bale, and once he had been booked, it was always going to end in tears. You look at the game sometimes and see things coming, and his second yellow was one of those.”

Aldo also talked about the travails of Andy Carroll:

“Andy is fit now, he is over his injury, but he needs games and he needs minutes. I think his work rate is there for all to see, as it was on Sunday, but you can still see the areas he needs to work on. As a centre-forward, he needs to be in the box more often. Too many times he was coming wide to chase the ball, and that is not where his strengths lie. When I used to play for the Republic of Ireland, we had Niall Quinn. And if Quinny wasn’t at the far post when the ball was out wide, Jack Charlton would absolutely slaughter him in front of everyone. Andy is similar to Niall in many ways. He is great aerially and decent with his feet. It is just that positional side of things that he struggles with; he doesn’t utilise his best attributes at times. But I’m sure Kenny will work on him, and will sort that out. As I say, a few games will help massively.”

I’d like to meet this “Andy” he talks about. Is he any relation to the wastrel wearing an LFC shirt?

    • Paul says:

go support someone else you waster, our club don’t need idiots like you who constantly batter our team, there’s enough people from outside the club doing that.

  • mc_katsi says:

Mr. Chambers, 5 games into a season does not make a player. Like the king said, LFC bought him for 5 years not 5 games….give it a break.

  • Cal says:

why dont u just go and support other teams chambers. Now is the time we show our support to kk and the players. no room for jerks like u

    • Gary says:

Just want to know. Did you support Benitez the same way too? I hope you agree with me because he didn’t deserve to get sacked when he wasn’t backed like Dalglish. He bought players with quality. That was the mans favourite word, quality. Kenny’s signings are really letting him down, tactically Carroll, Henderson and Adam cannot carry out his tactics. And it doesn’t help when Kenny Dalglish is all about ethics. If a player wants to stay, its in the best interest of the club? So does that mean we get rid of players who are quality that don’t want to stay. Look at Modric, captain of Tottenham. Look at Rooney. Blindly stubborn is what I call it

      • Teasle says:

I’m not sure if KK has tactical nouse. I agree that Benitez was a great tactian but KK appears beyound critism.

      • Cal says:

U know what, i did support rafa and i admire him for standing up for the club against the cowboys. i was gutted when he was told to leave.
I cannot agree with u about keeping players who want to leave though. would u say having a bad apple in the team is better than having someone who would go out to the pitch and give u nothing less than 100%? look at what happened when we had a sulking u know who last year and the sort of influence caused to the team.

  • Berno says:

Hmmmm the same John Aldridge that said last season that Kevin Davies could be a good front man for us as we had problems with injuries and players with loss of form. Give it a rest Aldo…

  • LEROYRED says:

When is the guy going to come good—Andy Caroll & what was the gaffer thinking, he is giving me serious doubts about his ability. And John Aldridge: the “oracle of Liverpool”, so much for your postulations about who is good/fit to play for Liverpool and we are left with a workman like midfield with no craft and invention and are very obvious in our outlook, we get figured out too easily and for the life of me, must Jordan Henderson play????? We do not have any guile to sort out opponents like these at all and its painful and the technically sound guys have been sold off or shunted off on loan.

  • CP says:

jordon henderson a total waste of space!!!!!!!

  • MARK says:

i totally agree i just think andy carroll needs to position him self better in the box to many times the balls whipped in and hes already in the box , he needs to time his runs and be darting in and attacking balls then no defender could handle what he could do ,if im to critize a player it would be jordan henderson absolute disgrace he gets to play before the likes of kuyt , maxi ,spearing ,shelvey ,he dont tackle his passing and creativity is non existant ,and to let players like aqualani and raul go ahead of henderson is even more bizarre ,you look at man city, man united , chelsea and the quality of depth they have compared to us and we want to be champions again never going to happen ,and were kidding ourselves if we think we can with this current squad ,id love to see us put a second string team out and beat leeds 3 nil in the carling cup ,the club as a whole needs to get its act toghether ,keep quality get rid of the trash ynwa

  • Sam says:

Aldo is one funny character, He talks about taking high ground and not picking out on one individual after he relentlessly attacked Lucas for 3 years also picking up the scalps of Benitez, Aquilani and Babel along the way whenever a result went wrong.
The theme is quite familiar beat down non-Brits and encourage more understanding for locals. Aldo was angry about what he called £17mln wasted on Aquilani and that was after less than one year in the premiership while he he pleads for more time before people judge Carrol when He cost even more at £35mln and does significantly less for the team cause.
Carrol has a poor touch, be it first touch or subsequent touches and makes Crouch look like Messi. He has no awareness of the role he plays for the team just like Henderson who is supposed to play on the right but spends almost 90% of game time infield or getting in Lucas way at defensive midfield such that Lucas is always telling him to move back to his position rather than crowding central midfield while leaving the right back exposed. Henderson also has a tendency to always receive the ball then turn around to face Reina before delivering a pass thereby slowing down moment for players with speedier reflex and thoughts who will be anticipating return passes.
Its unbelievable that Carroll cost the equivalent of 5 Chicaritos or the equivalent of Suarez, Coates and Van de Vart combined

  • moz says:

come on guys give henderson a break, hes only young and just joined a big team, he needs time to settle in, now gerrards back he will learn a few things from him on the pitch

    • Stan says:

He might be young …but how many more games of non-existance do we allow him. If we persevere with him we lose midfield dominance all the time. Just cant afford to keep losing to teams. Put simply the defence looks as bad as it is because opposition teams are just walking through our midfield ..no defensive cover by our midfielders apart from Lucas. Henderson and Adam have no idea how to harass and tackle when we dont have the ball. I for one want us to get top 4 . Keep playing these two ,especially Henderson and that is a distant dream. I recall Kenny saying you earn your place in the team on merit.. how have those two earned their place ahead of Kuyt , Maxi or even Spearing for that matter? They have both been non – existant. Henderson should only be coming on if we are a goal or 2 up. Henderson was bought for the future anyway wasnt he? TIA YNWA

  • abraham says:

Ok, but how old is phil jones or welbeck or cleverly? What about K. Walker, Adam Johnson, Michael Richards etc.
Pls stop this mediocre mentality. It has cost liverpool 21yrs and Africa a life time.
Henderson is a waste of space – lacks confidence, lazy, cant tackle, lacks positioning sense, not athletic and weak. We needed ball retainers and strong xters in the team of last season not weak, skilless ball passers. We are weaker and i doubt if comolli really bought this player.

    • jimmy c says:

I dont like to attack young players but i agree with your comments abraham,(bad name you got there
mate straight out of a fairy story he he)henderson
is like a little boy and plays like one i would
love to know if this is one of comollis players
because if i thought that kenny bought this player
then i would be very worried indeed.
just a little thought on skirtel,he is not good enough for lfc never was never will be !iam more
excited about coates and a few of the young players coming up in the next couple of years
i believe in king kenny, and he his the man to sort
andy carrol out,the kid will come good.

  • badnews says:

send henderson to the reserve for a year. andy carrol is a 35 million mistake. imagine we could have bought hazard and affelay for that amount. for the 20 for henderson we could have bought m villa and a creative midfielder. if that had happened we would not be aiming for a champions league spot but the premier title. personaly aiming for a champions league is wrong mentality thats why we bought adams, carrol and henderson. half baked players in a world class team. till we bring world class players with pace man utd will be winning titles and we will be looking to knock them off the perch which belongs to us.

  • Jack says:

£55 million spent on Carroll and Henderson. Oh the mind boggles. We carry on like this and it won’t be long before Suarez wants out.

    • Stan says:

Your dead right Jack….you can already see hes starting to get frustrated much like Judas (Torres) before him at the lack of quality service he’s getting. If this continues I fear the worst especially if and when the big 2 in Spain come calling. I dont want to sound too negative but it is plain to see Henderson just isnt cutting it in a world class team such as Liverpool….He needs to be starting on the bench and being played when the game is fairly safe or having a spell in the reserves to get his game and confidence up. 1 thing is obvious he should never be starting ahead of Kuyt on the right or even spearing in the middle.

  • 4redkops says:

Support Kenny but wonder why he does something like play carrol living kuyt out, henderson while maxi and spearing or even bellamy are there then i think what if Benitez had all that financial backing where would LFC be???

  • daboy says:

Henderson was bought for the future and i guarantee he will have achieved more than Adam within 2 seasons.
Adam is my concern as he just does not seem Liverpool quality.
Henderson is not much older than Shelvey and is a lot better than him.

    • Stan says:

Is he? What gives you that impression? You must be watching another game when LFC plays or Shelvey must be a complete hack. Henderson is useless no drive, no creativity , no defensive cover no attacking threat , cannot find a splitting pass ..just a waste of money. Absolutely stupid comment comparing him to Shelvey cause hes not that good either.

  • Lee says:

Carroll has great potential and is still learning. The only reasons are giving him stick is because of a) his fee – which is no fault of his own and, b) Suarez settled in quicker while Carroll was recovering from injury.

This has nothing to do with supporting the team or Dalglish it has to do with the fact that he will come good and all this constant battering for no reason is not helping anyone.

Kuyt still lacks ability, never had the talent Carroll and yet he has been here for years. why don’t you pick on him instead you muppets!
