I really hope injuries don’t blight this young star’s career

|

Kelly has had a longer history with injuries than just hamstrings though. He missed a year of academy development with a back injury, and it was testament to his character that he continued to improve and bypass some of his fellow academy scholars to become a first team regular. After an impressive debut against Lyon in 2009, he was sidelined with a groin injury which kept him out for a fair few months, and since he has had to cope with hamstring injuries.

Hopefully as he strengthens the weakest parts of his body, such injuries become rarer and if he becomes a consistent performer, there is no doubt in my mind he will become England’s first choice right back. Kelly himself is hopeful of an England call up but was disappointed injury has hampered his chances for the European Qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales

“I was disappointed because obviously the England manager had talked about me but I know if I keep working hard my time will come.”

When both Johnson and Kelly are fit, Kenny will have a very difficult decision to make as to who starts, but it is a tribute to Kelly’s development that Dalglish now has a selection headache in this position, injuring permitting of course.
