Is this the broken promise which Raul’s talking about?

Raul Meireles spoke out on Monday about his departure from Liverpool and he said there was one promise Liverpool broke and that caused him to leave. Now what could this broken promise be? Meireles said:

“All I have to say is that I had one promise at Liverpool which wasn’t fulfilled. It’s not the only thing to blame. But that’s why the Liverpool fans are unsure why I left….Liverpool asked me to hand in a transfer request, so that’s normal. I was aware that Liverpool wanted to sell me in the summer, which was a bit surprising to me. There’s no point touching this subject any more. I was a bit surprised, but now I’m just concentrating on my present and future, and that’s with Chelsea.”

Looking back at the history and speculation surrounding Meireles at Liverpool, he was signed by Roy Hodgson from Porto and there is a suggestion that he was given a low wage contract when he signed with the ‘promise’ that his salary would be doubled if he had a good season for Liverpool. Now Meireles went on to play very well under Kenny Dalglish and that surely would have prompted Liverpool to offer him a new contract as per agreement with Hodgson.

But since Hodgson got sacked, it sounds like the promise to Meireles also went. But surely such an agreement would have been down on paper? What other promise could Liverpool have made to Meireles that they broke?

Perhaps it was playing time on the pitch and not just the practice field. However, most players move for money!

It would have helped if we had not tried to flog him to every club in Western Europe over the Summer. Perhaps he would have felt like he had more of a future.

But its only rumours from sites like this and crap newspapers that say we were trying to sell him.

No one at LFC has said that we were trying to sell him.

And totally agree, if he had half a decent agent, any possibility of a wage increase would have been stated in his contract.

Meireless did confirm those rumours when he acknowledged the club were looking to sell him.. The club has never come out and said we want to sell a player before but the tone is set when the manager does not exactly deny the rumours. Meireles and Aquilani were said to be on the way out and the club said nothing but when a rumour popped up that Lucas and Kuyt were on the way out, LFC officially denied this on the club website.
It doesnt take a magician to then know who is on the way out.
I do agree that the agent failed Meireles by not looking at the bigger picture by not getting any commitment in writing even though verbal agreements are contractually binding but the burden of proof makes it very difficult to enforce

Who cares!!!! Good luck Raul. Hope you have a short trophyless stint at Chelski.

why do these players moan,he said it wasnt for money so why did they have to pay him more, if it was promise of more game time just go and stop blaming everone, liverpool never got him to go like they did with other players it was his choice.

  • stan howard says:

it boils down to money and thats all we need to know. bellamy took a wage cut.

Chelsea fan here, and I come in peace.

Just to say that I had no idea how good Raul was. He’s been superb in his firt two games. I’m so surprised you let him go when thee likes of Henderson are clearly nowhere near his quality at the moment.

    Cheers

Your key phrase “at the moment”…Is Liverpool thinking like Chelsea?? They are a old team and rarely see an injection of youth during the season! Josh MacEacheran rides the pine and eventhough Henderson has struggled: game time = more increased performance! Raul is 28 years old! and for 12 million quid, thats a steal! I was more worried about loaning out Aqua again, so if Raul went for money?? or for Villa Boas??? or for whatever!!! YOU DON’T WANT TO BE A RED!!! Then LEAVE! and thats what he requested! Adios!

  • Dan says:

they guy gets picked over a kid who is nowhere near ready, Raul is a professional and has proved himself why do you think he left, it’s not always about money and if it was a contract is a contract verbal or not and if he was on a low wage pay him what he is worth atleast

  • Ashole says:

I was sure liverpool asked him to hand in a transfer request to escape the wrath of fans.
    12m was a bargain.
We should’ve never let him go.
Oh well, its over now. time to move on.

  • TKP says:

Come on… he had one purple patch where he knocked in a few goals… so did Maxi. He’s light in the tackle and doesn’t like to play on either wing… so getting 12 mil for a 28 year old that’s not committed to the cause is good business. I’ve never heard another player moan about a defaulted gentleman’s agreement – contracts are what determine the terms. The real loss this summer is Aquilani.

  • sai says:

    dalglish and comoli is sucked!

  • m kop says:

    money, money, money

    Money was promised to him.

If it was first team that was promised that would only be another stupid thing Hodgson did.

No one should be guaranteed first team football.

  • yardscouse says:

I saw this story earlier in the summer and i believe this is why he left. i hear lots of fans saying we should not have sold him, rubbish, even yossi said he knew rm was coming to chelsea. The player wanted to leave after chelski offered him bettter terms. Yes he had a purple patch but he did nothing for most of the season. In kenny i trust!! ynwa
