Just ask Tony Pulis which direction this Reds team is heading

I think I speak for every football fan in the world when I say it is always a lot more frustrating, even upsetting, when your team lose a game they should have won, let alone drawn. I was going to write this article quite quickly after the final whistle on Saturday evening but the fact that everything would have been charged full of emotion, I think a little bit of distance is needed to get a better picture of events.

One statistic really sums up the whole match really; Shots on goal: Liverpool 20, Stoke 2. As Stewart Downing said after the match it really wasn’t our day, and we will probably play worse this season and still win. Our profligacy in front of goal was frustrating and there was a lot of shouting at my computer screen when watching the match.

No doubt, the penalty decision was pretty harsh and although Jamie Carragher did have a hold on Jonathan Walters, the Stoke striker went to ground under his own volition rather than any force from Carra. It must be said that beyond the refereeing decisions though, Liverpool should have been well out of sight with the amount of opportunities they created anyway. Jordan Henderson had three attempts on goal in as many seconds, and though the young lad will come under some criticism for not putting one of those chances away, we must remind ourselves he is only 21, and he has yet to really master the art of finishing; something that will hopefully be added to his game in the coming years.

Rather than dwelling on the negatives of the match though, I think it is better to focus on the positives. In a stark contrast from last season at the Britannia stadium where we never looked liked scoring and were pushed back into our own half by a barrage of long balls and throw ins; this time we managed to limit Stoke’s hold over the match. There were only a couple of long throws into the box of note during the game and there were very few crosses into the box from the wings for Peter Crouch and Walters to capitalise on.

  • Chambers says:

All points taken B-U-T! We need to be scoring. Little point that we had 20 chances. We might have said 120 chances! The truth is that we DIDN’T score!

  • Stevie G (Walton) says:

Chambers, unfortunately, you are spot on!! We did not score but you must remember that under the likes of Hodgson we would have been lucky to get 2 shots on target!! I am just so glad we have King Kenny in charge and I am confident that our strikers will get into the groove of scoring soon. That is the ONLY thing that stops us from been a title contender this year, our wasting of chances in front of goal. Put that right and we can take on anyone. Just remember though that even the likes of Man Utd, City, Chelsea etc have still to visit Stoke and it will be interesting to see how they cope there. Also I will be interested to see if they get the decisions (for penalties etc) that Liverpool didn’t get!!!

  • Abraham says:

sorry mate chelsea took a point there on 15th august. The man(s) will score the goals our english players couldnt score. We are 5 pts behind in sept by coaching errors, wow! Henderson has cost 5pts already after paying £20m, wow! Big pity!

    • sdf says:

abraham your an idiot, the fact we have english players is not a negative. rooney has been the best player in the prem so far this season and guess what? he’s english! henderson has not cost us 5 points that a retarded statement!

      • Griffins says:

Augero and Suarez have been the best player in the league by far…Rooney is an English player from day 1.. both Augero and Suarez have little experience of the EPL and they have been playing well better than Rooney..

    • Karim says:

Unlike Man City, we arent looking for success over the next 1-2 years. If City dont win anything, then they will chop and change.

Liverpool are looking to the future. We have taken a gamble with Henderson and Carroll and I pray to God every day that its a gamble we win.

Stop criticising the team and actually support them!

If you dont want to support the team, then go up the Motorway and support the new glory hunters in blue, Man City.

      • Jacklad99 says:

Karim , supporters that pay for anything that involve Liverpool have a right to there own opinion , we spent to much money on Carroll and Henderson , end of , nasri was 4 mil more , seem like Liverpool have no idea how to buy and sell , to many duds aqualani. Poulsen, babel, Henderson , and Carroll , to think aguerro cost 3 mil more , we have bought saurez we looks a bargin at 22m , but will probably sell him for 26m if we don’t get 4th place

        • zahid says:

yeah just make sums of money up where did £26 mill come from. DO you think Nasri would have left Arsenal for LFC? Do you think we can match Man City with wages? Whether we paid over the odds or not i rather be where we are now then a year ago. Rome wasn’t built overnight we are a team in transition we can’t be great nor can we attract all the worlds best overnight.

  • Robbie m says:

When you try to move in one direction whilst being held back, and that person let’s go, you fall forwards! End of.

  • Mike says:

Why are we always defending mediocrity! He’s a professional for christ’s sake and should hav scored. Jeeeezuz! Ario goetze is 19 and i can bet he would have converted the chances. Same goes for other players who fluffed golden opportunities, that’s why they get paid so much. Pls drop henderson and start maxi in future games kenny.

    • zahid says:

chances are missed by even the best players in the world, at the end of the day you have to be the there to miss them. Suarez movement off the ball is nxt to none atleast we are creating chances now, yes its a shame we aint converting them at the moment Suarez’s finishing needs to improve he could have had atleast 5-6 goals already this season, but look to the positives then the negatives because theres more positives this season.

  • zahid says:

Maybe the rest of the team should take a leaf from Suarez’s book, the man has been our star performer every week who gives 110%. It’s easy to blame him for missing chances yet if he hadn’t been on the pitch at Stoke lets face it Stokes defenders would have had a stroll all game, just ask Pulis how hard he made it for his side. I think Hendo needs to be benches Kuyt on the right Downing on left with Bellamy or Carroll upfront. Both Hendo n Adam were losing possession far to often watching Adam this season what i have realised how poor his overall play is, his plus points are his set plays which are great, but we’ve not signed him for set plays. Yes hes got a great pass in him but apart from that he’s giving the ball away far too often and can’t tackle aswell as lacking composure, sometimes holding on to the ball and possession is better then looking for a long range pass. The sooner we have Gerrard back the better, quite frankly if he had been playing we would have got something from that game

  • J J says:

Adam needs to stop thinking he his Alonso and stop shooting from the half way line!He must of tried it in every game this season and start playing some quick through balls for Suarez to run onto like he did for Blackpool and DJ Campbell.

  • Prole says:

We were not good enough! No excuses! End of!
With regards to our summer transfers…. Adam was poor, Carrol is dropped and really struggling, Henderson is still young, Downing – hard to call, Suarez….must be worried!!

  • Joeme says:

He loaned Aquilani,he sold Meireles& wasted money on english players including a Crappy drunk in person of Carrol. These are nasty mistakes and i think he’s paying for them now,he must realy be a Xenophobe Dalglish. When you know Henderson is still young, why not let him learn from bench instead of making him start in all our matches. People keep saying under Hodgson we couldn’t create a chance! Can you imagine!fans talking like Lfc is meant to be in the middle of the table, what’s the essence of creating a chance when u know u won’t take it? Lfc is a big club & on top of the table is where we are meant to be but it seems dat’s impossible, now dat all we have is a bunch of ‘SKIll-less’ english attackers who can’t not even when the FANs are no longer confident and they feel satisfied wit creating goal chances without scoring them. Imagine if we had bought Aguero& Mata just as we were linkd to them in the transfer window. Daglish is a good manager bt his preference for English players may jst spoil d show.

    • Harry P says:

What an ignorant comment. Kenny Dalgish is a Xenophobe?

The man who fielded the first team to win an FA Cup without a single Englishman in the team has some sort of obsession with playing only Englishmen? How hilarious!

      Is Luis Suarez English? No.

      Is Luis Enrique English? No.

      Is Sebastian Coates English? No.

      Is Charlie Adam English? No.

      Is Craig Bellamy English? No.

      Is Doni English? No.

      Is Villyan Bijev English? No.

So if Dalglish is only interested in buying English players then why did he buy those guys?

It’s nice to imagine what it would be like if Liverpool had bought Kun Aguero and Juan Mata but those two players cost a combined £62 million in fees alone, and went to big money clubs that could guarantee Champions League football for this season.

In comparison, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson cost a combined £36 million in fees, want to play for Liverpool, and cost something like £10 million a year less in wages.

      • Harry P says:

Sorry, that should be Jose Enrique.

(I have Luis Enrique on the brain. What a player he was in his time.)

        • zahid says:

Did Mata have PL experience and was he proven?

          NO

Did Aguero have PL experience and was he proven?

          NO

Bilijev is one for the future, it was only Coates who has no PL experience and we got him for a good price not over the odds like some of the defenders we were linked with.

Kenny’s n the owners main target is the CL we needed more proven PL players to get in the top 4 and once we have then you will see more European players added to the squad.

        • zahid says:

besides atleast when the chips are down the British players are more likely to work harder for the club then the foreigners who will look to Barce/Real/CHavski to bail em out

      • Jacklad99 says:

Ok let’s all do maths here, Carroll and henderson cost 55 m add downing to that 75 m I know who I would have bought mata and aguerro in the long run they both would have been better options , even if they didn’t want to come there’s so much more quality out there that we could of got instead

  • Shersingh says:

    hi LFC fans,
i will only say that the errors of defending against bolton and stoke have caused LFC to conceed 2 GOALS. Carragher is an excellent player on the pitch but man, he is 33, and for LFC it is time to replace him and to create the next Carragher, which i think Coates will do. he is young and like carragher which took several years to be like he was at his prime. and also we have dirk kuyt. He also is past his age. he is slow and we need more youths (Henderson, Suarez,Adam,Lucas) and with lightning pace and one that has goal accuracy like Fowler. and also the REFEREE was CRAP for the match against STOKE

  • The Don - South Africa says:

Say what you have to say, but the real problem with Liverpool and which has been happening for a long time is that, THEY JUST CANNOT SCORE AND WIN away from Anfield. Face it, this is the real problem. When I look at their fixtures, most away games are either drawn, lost by a single goal, or miracously won, shockigly at the bigger teams like Chelsea and Arsenal. But when they play average (no disrespect to Stoke) or below average teams they GENERALLY LOOSE. Now this is just not acceptable for a team with championship aspirations let alone the top 4. Until LFC LEARN to win away from home at these kinds of teams, even ugly wins, I fear their aspirations will not be achieved

    • paul says:

Im sorry Don stick to the Kaiser Chiefs, you spout Rhubarb.
Get behind the team win lose or draw, we have played four games and playing well.
If we had your way we would sack KK, sell Andy Carrol and bring back Ngog.
Get a grip this time last year we had a clown of a boss looking like being relegated and now you idiots on here are still not happy.
We dont need fans like you, you are making a laughing stock of proper supporters.
god help us if we dont win against Spurs, I can see it now” sack the board etc”

      WHOPPERS

  • Jack says:

I would rather look at the positives. Just as we had really bad luck on saturday so the law of averages say we will get a win soon in a game which we won’t deserve to. Its that simple. It happens to every team a couple of games a season. Lets not dwell on it.

  • mike-h says:

did we really play that badly???? it happens, opportunities are not converted we lost three points. but god almighty were all you idiots moaning after the chelsea an man u victories last year?? were you moaning at henderson against bolton or the team for that matter? do me a favour, the lot of you all do one. Half of you probably dont even go the game, so sitting in your nice comfy chair in the south, or in europe or anywhere else in the world, piss off and support your local club if watching a team in transition is that hard for you. Apologies to those of you around the globe who are fully supportive. It’s time to drive unwanted ‘guests’ out of the club.

  • DAVSPURS says:

You have spent 80 million on players and got Bellamy for newt and iam sorry to sy you will win newt. Spurs created chance after chance last season and we finished 5th because of it. Sunderland 1-1 Stoke 0-1 is not good enough and your bad pre season should have told you something is missing Hull 3 Liverpool 0 Singing too many players can have a bad affect on moral to the players missing out like Spearing and others. Last season Daglish finished with two defeats and this will happen again 3-1 to Spurs

    • Karim says:

p*** off back to your own board.

    • zahid says:

worry about your own form nevermind ours, stop envying us coz we’ve spent so much. Just because Levy hasn’t spent much of the money he made from last seasons CL on the team don’t get jealous mate.

    • zahid says:

Oh get use to the Europa because that’s where you belong and will probly be there nxt season. To get back in the CL you needed to strengthen your defence you got rid of Woodgate, King’s hardly fit, Kaboul is hardly reliable, asi whats his face is crap, your right fullback looks decent, you sold Hutton and Dawsons injured. Gary Cahill would have been perfect along side Dawson as i beleive that will be the future Eng centre back pairing, but your going to be exposed come Sunday.

    • paul says:

Yes youre right Dav, Spurs are really doing well and all youre players are happy to be there, you keep taking the medication son you have had your 5 mins with the big boys.
As for pre season what does that matter? and Lurn two spele U whopper

    • paul says:

Ps who wants to win a newt?

  • Karim says:

Can we just get behind the team please.

How nice it is to see British players back playing for LFC.

Forget about the other teams in the league, its time we focused on us!

  • Joeme says:

Harry P” are u kidding me? Dalglish is from scotland. He bought:
    Henderson
    Downing
    Carrol, all 3 from England…
    Adam from Scotland
    Bellamy from Wales
They all fall under the UNITED KINGDOM.
That been said if we realy wanted Aguero&Mata we would hav at least gotten one of them trust me Lfc isn’t dat bad. In fact i think one of this players proclaimd himself to be a Liverpool fan. Concerning Coates: one can infer that he bought him so that Suarez can feel a bit at home. I don’t know if u can remember Lfc was once linkd with with the old Forlan. Meanwhile,we all know it’s not that possible to have a full english team so some foreigners will definitely still be in the club. The truth be told, it’s so obvious Dalglisg favous english boys.
B4 i leave, i appreciate one thing about ur comment,it was less ‘Insultive’,straight to d point, some would have preferd been insultive to driving home their opinion. Ynwa….
