Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes the Reds probably sold Raul Meireles because of a need to balance the books as well as letting go a player who was no longer a first team regular. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:

“The loss of Raul Meireles to Chelsea raised a few eyebrows but I don’t think the Portugal international would have been let go if Dalglish thought he was definitely going to be a regular in the team. Somewhere along the line Liverpool would have to start balancing the books and Meireles was a player that had value. Perhaps it was the trade-off for Fenway Sports Group finding the extra money to sign Sebastian Coates last month – yes, we’ll pay for him, but we want some of that money back as soon as possible. With the sale of Meireles, David Ngog and Christian Poulsen, and clearing others off the wage bill, Liverpool are starting to do that.”

Lawro also praised the work of Liverpool Director of Football Damien Comolli:

“All told, it has been a very productive few months in the transfer market for Liverpool. They got rid of plenty of deadwood and managed to bring in players with both talent and potential. Damien Comolli deserves some credit. With the director of football overseeing transfers, Dalglish hasn’t had be bothered with bashing the phones and dealing with agents and managers and all that. From what I can gather, Dalglish simply passed on a wish list of players he wanted, and another list of players he would be prepared to let go and do a deal with. Comolli’s role has completely taken all the pressure off Dalglish in terms of transfers, and left him free to do what he does best – manage the team.”

This week it is former LFC WAG Gisela Molinero!!

It’s obvious to me that Mark Lawrenson knows very little about what goes on in the corridors of Liverpool Football club!
