Molby: Why I felt the time was right these 2 players left

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Jan Molby said that he felt it was right decision to let both Raul Meireles and Joe Cole leave:

“Raul Meireles – another transfer I simply didn’t see coming. I am not too sure what is behind that move, but once he made it clear he wanted to be elsewhere, he was never going to be kept. And Liverpool can certainly do without him. He had his moments at Liverpool, but consistency-wise he wasn’t quite there for me. I used to watch him, and could never decide what type of midfielder he was. He wasn’t a playmaker, wasn’t a passer and wasn’t a tackler; he fell between a number of stalls for me. It will be interesting to see how he does, however. He has experience in the Premier League, which could be to Chelsea’s benefit. But Liverpool needn’t shed too many tears.”

On Joe Cole, he said:

“I was one of those who wasn’t particularly sure he would be a good signing when he arrived last summer from Chelsea. To me it looked like a gamble. My personal opinion is that the way the game is played these days means you have to be so quick, both of body and of mind. Teams move the ball at pace, and the only players who hold onto the ball for any length of time are the ones who are a bit special. I always felt Joe just held onto the ball too long, took too long to make a decision in possession, and it did him no favours. He always said he preferred to play centrally, and there was talk that Liverpool intended to use him there when he joined, but in truth the game simply passed him by whenever he played there. Without wishing the sound cruel, Joe’s role these days has become that of an impact player, to be used in small bursts from the substitutes’ bench. Over the course of a cut and thrust, 90 minute Premier League game he was found wanting, and became a passenger. It’s a strange move, but hopefully he can start to enjoy his football again in France.”

So Meireles is fans’ player of the year one minute, then inconsistent the next.

Who was consistent for Liverpool last season, Jan? From what I remember it was a tricky campaign for the Reds before Kenny came in and steadied the ship, ironically coinciding with Meireles’ best form for the club.

These pundits are as fairweather as any fan – just because they’re on the tv, their opinions are made to look more valid than the rest of ours, but I put no stock in any of their words.

Raul asked to go … end of debate!

Wish him well but I’m more focused on the new LFC, not players who have left …

I have two points to make:

1-we should have gotten more for him, because it was obvious that Chelsea wanted him at all costs, their manager wanted someone bad, and wanted him because they couldn’t land Modric. At the least we should have gotten sturridge as part of the deal, if not, should have stood our grounds for more cash.

2 -it is not fair to call him Judas, he only submitted his transfer request because we have been trying to get rid of him since the beginning of summer, and he was way down the pecking order in terms of a first team place. Plus more importantly, if he is Judas, then what does it make of Suarez, Carroll, Downing, Enrique, Adam, Henderson, and Coates. shouldn’t they be Judases as well for leaving their teams??????

We can’t just call players that leave Judases, and the players that arrive fantastic piece of business.

I know it is very frustrating, to have god players leave, but this football now a days, you win some you lose some.
