There’s no guarantee he’ll be an automatic starter anymore

If I were to say 12 months ago that Steven Gerrard, Liverpool’s talismanic captain, would find it difficult to get into the starting line-up, I would have been checked into a psychiatric ward.

Here we are, though, in the infancy of the 2011/2012 season and Liverpool’s form is sky high. Only three league games have passed, yet 7 points are already on the board and the club have already recorded their first league win at Arsenal in more than a decade.

With Steven Gerrard recovering from a serious groin injury, Dalglish has begun the season with Lucas and Charlie Adam in the central midfield berths. Lucas, who was voted the ‘Standard Chartered Fans player of the year’ for the 2010/2011 season, has started the current campaign in fine form and Charlie Adam has slotted seamlessly into the team.
The favoured formation thus far has been 4-4-2, albeit in a very fluid structure, with King Kenny preferring a two-pronged strike force.

All of which begs the question, where does Steven Gerrard fit into these plans?

Without doubt, Steven Gerrard’s best position is in central midfield, where he can utilise his endless qualities. However, with Lucas and Adam occupying the two central midfield positions, it seems as though Steven Gerrard may have to change his role to warrant starting.

Kenny is already looking at this with the other coaches and they will know where is the best position after determining Stevie’s fitness level. He might start in one position and then be moved to another later as he gains better fitness!

  • ste c says:

if stevie g is even 80% of the player he was he will get in the team, either as cm or on the right(which may suit best)or behind suarez/carrol/kuyt. there is no way that a fit stevie g will be left out on a regular basis when fit

  • SuaRed says:

Gerrard is a true world class player and will be guaranteed a place in the starting line up. either centrally or on the right/left.

He’s WORLD CLASS and respected throughout Europe! He has a least 15 goals a season in him and double figures in assists. In fact the new players that have been bought into the team this year should make Gerrard even better.

    Stupid to suggest otherwise.

  • swiller says:

so what your saying is charlie adam will keep steven gerrard out of the liverpool team!!!!

  • Mr Expert. says:

For me, it’s quite simple. We still need him in the center midfield even there are newcomers the like of Adam and Henderson. Although Stevie missed for the last 6 month, but his touch in midfield is still much needed. As we know, the new partnership between Adam and Lucas in the midfield done quite well recently, but the are some flawless that can be clearly seen in those two partnership. For me Gerrard is a Class player and I’m highly confident that his service will be needed by LFC for coming 3-4 season ahead like Lampard did in Chelsea FC. So, the point is, i strongly believe that he will be an automatic starter in the 1st 11 this season as long as his hamstring problem did not cost him. His attacking minded, leadership skills and shooting ability will made him favor ahead of Lucas, Adam, Henderson and other midfield.. Therefore, i recommend that the next game against Hotspur,

    Reina

    —-Kelly——-Carragher—-Agger—–Enrique—-

    —————Lucas————-Adam————-

    ——Bellamy———-Gerrard———Downing—-

    ———————–Suarez———————

  • Liverpool needs Gerrard he is the world best player his job as he is best in ball distributor can help Suarez ,Carroll to score minimum 2goals to avoid any Ref interference we all need you YNWA

  • percy says:

well after watching us play yesterday & then reading this article, you definitely need 2 be checked into a psychiatric ward!!

  • linc says:

who can bench 70% fit gerrard in the current liverpool team surely percy is right, beside lucas whose role is totally different, adam is not worthy of carrying gerrard’s boot, henderson need 10year and hard work to be anywhere near gerrard. On Daglish I have said it before and i will still repeat it, we are giving him more credit than he deserve, what are the likes of spearing, jonjo, doing on bench while playing adam and hendo(look at what cleverly and co did to man city). While did he let mereiless leave and also aquillani, both of which are better than his beloved adam and hendo. I said he let them go b’cos he’s not favouring them(aquillani and mereiless) ahead of adam and hendo.

  • linc says:

mr daglish is suppose to strenghten the team and you can’t do that if you keep letting some of your best player go, mereiless and maxi are some of the players that got him his job of permanent basis and his way of paying them is to stop using them over the likes player that are not as good as them just yet. I did not blame him for buying those players b’cos they can strenghen the team now and take over later in future but am blaming him for handling the team over to them while they are not ready to take over and to make it worse he’s letting the already established player go.

What kind of nonsense article is this!!! Gerrard is King and I’m not saying this because I’m a Merseysider, I’m saying this because 85-90% of the time, Gerrard is the linchpin for LFC. His passes and placement alone makes a difference on the pitch and will only make Carroll and Suarez 10 times more lethal. Do you honestly think Torres would have left if Gerrard was a bit more healthy playing games!?!?!? NOPE! Gerrard peripheral vision alone kept Torres on the score sheet! His “Antelope-esque” movement with the ball exhibits what LFC lack right now, as I’ve watched Adam try it (eventhough he’s good), but he’s no StevieG! Once Gerrard is healthy I look forward to his starting role automatically! May not be the best captain verbally, but his team-mates know that when StevieG is on the pitch there is a different aura! Looking forward to seeing many dives after your goals, the fist pumping that we all miss and our captain who leads by example…..very very very soon! 🙂

  • Keith says:

    lol – more fantastic journalism.

maybe we should drop suarez to keep stevieG company on the bench too eh?

    lol lol lol lol

  • Mike says:

The truth is stevie remains d best midfielder + d most influential player we’ve got. Unti charlie adam learns that simple is genius, he’ll remain a liability. I believe henderson should be benched and eased into the action gradually. Also, we need to sign players in january. We could go for damiao, adam johnson, albrighton, leroy fer and sell andy carroll!

  • Eric says:

    Reina
    Kelly Coates Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas Adam
    Downing Suarez Bellamy

  • Igwe says:

Stop playing carrol he’s not a liverpool player any longer…..Bring back Torres

  • dixie222 says:

In answer to your statement, i have a question! Who is the best midfielder liverpool have? well there goes your answer to your statement. To leave gerrard out when the others are playing is a complete and utter joke. gerrard will be walking into the liverpool and england teams. Gerrard has had a good break, it may have just been the break he needed, he will be right up for it when he comes back!

  • Jim2010 says:

Gerard is key to Liverpool even after the addition of a few excellent midfield players.
His likely position will be behind Suarez in the role he played so well in under Rafa – especially during the season we finished second.
He can also play right & to be really honest there is no position he couldn’t play aswell as or better than in the team – he is that good.
Most critics even the most biased ex-man u players and pundits call him world class and ‘anyone’ who even suggests he may not be an automatic choice when fit is a fool.
He is mr Liverpool & will remain so until his legs give up the ghost.

    He is priceless.

  • Jim2010 says:

Like it or loathe it but Frank Lampard is a midfield legend for Chelsea and has been a an ever present for England for years. Gerard is very much the same (but for Liverpool).

Which one of the two is constantly being questioned & rumoured to be ‘limited’ & ‘on his last legs’ and about to lose his England place….?

    Now, why is that…..?

  • red-indian says:

simple solution.drop henderson, bring in stevie.henderson is a complete waste of money.
