Liverpool legend Phil Thompson feels that the departures of Alberto Aquilani and Raul Meireles was right for both players. He told Goal.com:

“I think it’s decisions and you have to make decisions. Alberto Aquilani spends last season on loan and he came back in the summer. Yeah, he was [the best player in the pre-season] but you have to look at the quality of the opposition as well. The two players are quite similar in many ways – Meireles and Aquilani. Both are central midfield players, both are forward midfield players, so it’s a forward midfield player of a three (up front). They would have to fit in to how you are going to play the game. I think the way Kenny [Dalglish] has probably looked at it at the time, he has not seen them fit in. . . I think both things suited both parties. Alberto and Raul got what they wanted, because Alberto knew his results weren’t needed to go and play (for Liverpool) and Raul was not going to be in the first team – he wanted to leave.”

Liverpool face Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

That made no sense whatsoever thommo!

    Jeez!!!

Basically, we spent over £40million on three players who are going to start every game plus we have Gerrard to come back who is two / three times the player Raul / Alberto will ever become.

We also have young Jay Spearing who given the right amount of time will do really well, clearly Kenny fancies him as a player.

Also, with only one up front now with two wide men, the system doesnt fit having two players of Alberto and Raul in there.

Spot on mate! However Kenny needs to look to implement Maxi into every possible game. He’s riding on a high from the end of last term and usually translates early in the next (current) term. It’s impt to have the poachers in the game when goals are seemingly hard to come by, plus he works well with Suarez and Kuyt and I’m sure he’ll help give Carroll more openings because opponents know how deadly Maxi “can” be when on! I watched the ManU highlights from the CL and I truly think Downing is the same type of player that Giggs is. Having him “jutt” out from the right side coming to the middle and riffling it in is a necessary move, plus he has a good right foot when crossing as we saw in the last game!

Alberto is a good player but no where near a Gerrard nor Alonso type and really I’d rather Adam in there eventhough he’s struggling at the moment. Raul, we thank for those consecutive good performances since January which lifted us, but Kenny already invested in others and him moving I guess we had to accept. Plus he’s 28 and got back a better fee we paid for him and he’d be unhappy if Gerrad can somehow stay fit for a large part of the season
