5 Key Battles that Liverpool need to win against United

|

According to Opta Sports, Manchester United’s shooting accuracy (26%) and their shot conversion rate (54%) have been the best among Premier League clubs this season, taking them to the top of the league with a phenomenon 24 goals scored, more than any other team.

Dalglish and co. would have to be at top of their game, both in terms of tactical set up and execution on pitch, if Liverpool is to gain maximum points from the game. As Tottenham, Bolton and particularly Arsenal would all witness, United could be lethal in front of goal if given a chance.

As it has been proven many times this season, it is difficult to predict Saturday’s starting line up of either side. Coming off an international break makes it even trickier. Nevertheless, I believe the below would constitute the main battles of the match which Liverpool would need to triumph in order to have a positive outcome from the match.

Enrique vs Nani

Although it isn’t guaranteed that Nani would play at United’s right midfield or even start the match, it is highly likely that he would play a good part of the match on the right side of the Red Devil’s midfield. Enrique would have to be fully alert to the speed and trickery of the Portuguese international and deny him time and space on the ball. If he succeeds at keeping Nani at bay, the Spaniard would make another major step towards gaining his first international cap with La Roja.

Right Back vs Young

The right back position would be the biggest selection dilemma that Dalglish could face during his match preparations. With both having injury/fitness problems, starting either of Johnson or Kelly introduces danger of recurrence of their injury. Other options include inexperienced Flanagan or out of position Skrtel. As we have experienced against Black Cats and Spurs, this could be a risky option, particularly against skilful and a quick player such as Young who would most probably be regularly accompanied by Evra bombing down the flank. Another alternative would be to move Carra to right back, though effects of his absence from heart of defence would need to be carefully assessed.
