Some shocking recent stats when the Reds face ‘easier’ teams

|

Since Kenny Dalglish returned to the manager’s post at Anfield in January, Liverpool have enjoyed some fine results in difficult games. The Reds beat Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City at the back end of last season, as well as picking up a creditable point away to Arsenal.

This season, they have already won at the Emirates Stadium and Goodison Park, and were unlucky not to beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side last weekend.

However, the team seem to have struggled somewhat in the games many would consider to be ‘easier’ than the ones mentioned above. Sunderland, currently sitting 17th in the Premier League table, took a point from Anfield in the opening day in what now looks a disappointing result for Kenny Dalglish’s side.

It follows on from last season: in the six games against the three teams which were relegated (Birmingham City, Blackpool and West Ham United), Liverpool took just seven points out of a possible 18.

The Reds dropped points at home to Wolves and Wigan, and also lost on their travels to West Brom and Blackburn, with all four sides looking potential relegation candidates towards the end of the season.

In fact, the only side in the bottom half who failed to take a point off Liverpool were Bolton Wanderers. This is made all the more peculiar by the fact that maximum points were taken from both Fulham and Chelsea from the top half.

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

It wasn’t being unlucky against ManU. It was simply not having anyone capable of finishing! We need a first rate international striker to partner Suarez.Carroll is not up to it. It is as simple as that.

I fully agree. These ‘smaller’ games a crucial. But I feel that most of the points we dropped against smaller teams was because of limited options in the squad. We now have options in Bellamy, Caroll, Henderson, Maxi to come from the bench and make in impact.

Besides having the option to change players it is a mentality thing. Something which needs to grow within a squad. Something which might take several years. Just look at Manchester United.

Very true article in hindsight although I don’t think you can classify the reds under kenny as the same as the reds under Roy think you should have just concentrated on kennys games you could still raise the same point. And chambers typical Carroll bashing there using our lack of killer instinct against united to have a pop at a player you don’t like WHO NEVER EVEN GOT ON THE PITCH haha funny! Hope one day you fans turn into supporters then more of our players can stop playing like they’re scared to make a mistake.
