His record of 8 Goals in 5 League Starts speaks for itself

|

The inclusion of Maxi Rodriguez in the starting line up against Chelsea was generally well received by Reds fans and I especially felt that it was long overdue. When you consider that he was one of Liverpool’s star players towards the end of last season then you have to feel that the ex Atletico Madrid man has been unlucky not to feature more in this campaign.

His goal against Chelsea will have done wonders for his confidence and it came as no surprise to me at all when the Argentinean put Liverpool ahead in the first half. Under Kenny Dalglish, Maxi Rodriguez has been a real goal machine and his record of eight goals in his last five league starts speaks for itself. Maxi clearly has the technical ability and game intelligence to succeed in the new style of play Dalglish is trying to implement, and this is reflected in his record for us since Kenny took over. Nobody should forget that one of the main reasons behind Liverpool’s resurgence under Dalglish last season was the inspired form of Maxi Rodriguez, who seems to have the positioning of a poacher.

This season has no doubt been a bit bizarre when you consider how good Liverpool’s away form has been compared to their home form, and I would blame part of the inconsistency on the fact that the reds are trying to gel so many new players into the team at once. Certain players like Charlie Adam and Jose Enrique are too crucial to be left out of the team but young talents more for the future like Jordan Henderson should be introduced from the bench for now.

Stewart Downing hasn’t been amazing but has at least shown glimpses of the huge talent he possesses and the fact that he is the only out and out winger in the team makes him crucial to Liverpool’s first XI. At the age of 30, Maxi Rodriguez has so much to offer Liverpool, and should be the man that our younger attacking midfielders like Henderson learn from. The Argentinean seems made for the pass and move style of play and his inclusion in the team more often than not coincides with us playing some attractive football.
