The On Pitch Battles We’re Likely to see on Sunday

|

Adam vs. Mereiles- Liverpool fans were loath to sell Mereiles and the Portuguese has added a new dimension to his team with his crisp and incisive passing. Adam too has made an impact at his new club not least for his stunning set piece ability, and just like Mereiles is multifarious. Based on their current form there is nothing to chose between the two. Draw

Anelka vs. Kuyt- The Frenchman is still an excellent player and even at the wrong side of 30 can still shift. Kuyt may not be the most technically talented (although he is better than people give him credit for) but his indefatigability, consistency and predilection for scoring important goals has guaranteed him a place in Liverpool hearts. If you wanted to choose a player for the big occasion it would have to be Kuyt. Winner-Kuyt

Mata vs. Downing- Downing has struggled to live up to his reputation but his performance against Sweden showed his undoubted ability. Unfortunately for him he loses this little battle by some distance. Mata has become the fulcrum of his teams play and is already one of the best playmakers in the league. His ability to dictate play means Chelsea finally have the creative player they pined for. Winner-Mata

Torres vs. Suarez- The old Liverpool idol vs. the current Kop idol, the fallen angel against the rising star. At the moment the Uruguayan is one another planet to his predecessor. Suarez is electrifying the public week in week out and his four-goal haul against Chile was almost Messi-esque. Torres however raises hopes of a revival before quickly crushing them. Expect Liverpool fans to remind Torres and Chelsea of the 50 million they received about 1000 times throughout the match. Winner-Suarez

Villas Boas vs. Dalglish- Almost 30 years separates these two managers. Villas Boas is a precocious talent and has demonstrated his talent in his short time at Chelsea. But he compares unfavorably to Dalglish. The canny Scot has proven himself a serial trophy winner and there is no more suitable candidate to take the reins at Liverpool. It will be many a year before Villas Boas can hope to match his counterpart’s managerial acumen.

The overall result is 6-5 in the Reds favor, which will come as a surprise to many especially when looking at the league table. On paper the sides are evenly matched and we can expect a close contest when they collide on Sunday.
