We could do with him finding his scoring boots again

|

Recent statistics have shown Liverpool to be the most wasteful side in the Premier League. Missed opportunities against Norwich and Swansea resulted in crucial dropped points at home, and the Reds have only managed 14 goals from their first 11 league fixtures this season.

Arsenal and Tottenham, the two sides most likely to contest the battle for fourth place with Liverpool, have already scored 23 and 21 times respectively. Chelsea have 24 goals, Manchester United have 28, and Manchester City have a staggering 39. Even Newcastle, the one side above the Reds who are unlikely to remain their all season, have scored 17 times.

What Kenny Dalglish could really do with is a proven goalscorer stepping up to the plate. Andy Carroll is still struggling to find his best form, while Luis Suarez seems to be being relied on to score the goals single-handedly. Steven Gerrard is injured, Stewart Downing has yet to impress and most of Charlie Adam’s goals last season came via set pieces. So what better time for Dirk Kuyt to rediscover his scoring touch?

When Fernando Torres departed Liverpool for Chelsea in January, there would have been concern among the Anfield faithful over who would score the goals. Admittedly, Torres hadn’t exactly been on fire in his final few months on Merseyside, but he still had that goalscoring instinct that made him a constant danger. Suarez was coming in from abroad and would need time to settle in, and Carroll arrived injured.

Fortunately, in the second half of last season Kuyt popped up with some crucial goals. His late winner against Sparta Prague secured progress in the Europa League, and he further increased his hero status at the club with a hat-trick against Manchester United. Yes, all three goals were tap ins or near enough, but he still showed good anticipation to be in the right place to score them.

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

The midfield is not functioning well in the absence of Gerrard and Lucas is a handicap so Kyut does get enough support or passes/crosses of good quality for him to convert into goals.

Kuyt is a ‘striker’ (poacher)but has been played in a different position constantly, because he is versatile! Good all over the field. But KK has to persist and try the new ‘duffers’ that he signed has’n’t he! Kuyt has always been there to rescue LFC when the main strikers have been unavailable,(injured)etc, but he can’t do much good when brought on with 15 minutes left to play. However,Lfc(owners),need to start spending on ‘top players’,because the ones they have brought in,in the last transfer window(apart from Enrique),are just not good enough. The big problem,as other fans have said,is that it will be difficult to attract quality players with not playing in Europe?’IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE LFC GET BACK INTO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE’.
