Have the Reds wasted £100million?

|

A lot has been going through my mind, some good some bad and right now I’m not so sure I know where to begin. So this might come across as an unreasonable rant, but I feel I need to let some of my anger out.

What on earth has Kenny Dalglish gone and done with £100m pounds? Firstly, he starts off by spending £35m (transfer record) on a player who is meant to be good in the air, since when do you spend that amount of money on a player who can’t offer you anything else? And then when the player arrives you all of a sudden realise that he isn’t even good in the air at all. His movement is crap, he stands on the bloody football pitch, he’s lethargic, no pace, not a hope in hell of getting past a defender, and let’s not even start on his ball control. The guy lays-off a ball to a winger in the middle of the park, then stands there. He then stands there, WTF??? What the hell is Bellamy supposed to do when he gets to the by-line?

To top it all off, we went and overpaid on other players who were supposedly meant to get this guy firing. £20m on a “moneyball” signing (most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard) who is supposed to provide the quality ball for our one dimensional record signing to feed off. And more money on another chap whose set-piece alone was apparently worth £10m at some point. Not to mention £20m on some youngster who is supposed to be the next best thing. The most depressing bit is that we got rid of some perfectly good players to accommodate this lot.

What peeves me the most is when I go onto the LFC forums and I see someone saying they think Andy Carroll played well. He won a few headers in the air (around the centre circle, might I add) and laid off a few balls. Really??? Is that what it takes to be considered a striker good enough for Liverpool Football Club, is that what we should be expecting from a £35m investment? For some reason our management seem to think it’s fine to splash unheralded amounts of money on what I and many others would consider to be at best average players, players whom no other top club would touch.

[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]

To think that Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam were considered to be the right kind of player to take us forward still has me scratching my head. Our management seem to be settling for for these second grade players and are happy to over pay for them, and we have a lot of LFC fans who also seem to think we are going on the right path by getting these second graders in. I feel short changed by our management at present, I don’t think they have made the best use of FSG’s money here.

Am I misreading something here? To me it seems like we are starting to accept mediocrity and that we can’t compete with the other top sides for the best talent around. I thought we were fucking LFC or do I have that mixed up as well.

Now you can point at the league table and say we are not is such bad shape but for how long are going to keep relying on Chelsea and Arsenal to keep dropping point for us to stay in touch? We ought to be doing much better. I happen to think that considering the amount we have spent on building this squad we should really be expecting more.

    • teesomethang says:

ngoni, thanks for the aticle mate.finally herez somebady who thinks, sees and argues the way i do.kenny has wasted money on useless players.2m for stew,35 for andy.we could have gotten better players with that kind of money.with 55m we could have gotten podolski 16m,de jong 10m,ramirez 15m,xaqhiri,15m making a total of 56m.but we spent it on two useless players.stew just runs and nothing comes out.shame.kenny is a poor tactician,he is just a legend.he is arrogant too like rafa.he plays kuyt ahead of maxi, stew ahead of maxi and bellers.shame.

Now I agree, Mr Chas not hit the ground running, but to bitch about him after Tuesdays game is a little unfair… We created very little for him to work with, apart from the knockdown to Dirk, yes he dident do a great deal…But we know he isnt quick ,so he aint gonna run past the 2 defenders marking him and score is he? The system was wrong,if you play one upfront, you need 1 or 2 players bombing from midfield to help/create, we did not see that..I see very little about Enriques pass from the free kick that allowed City to break away for the penalty, yes he has been a great signing, but this happened just after the sending off and killed us… I agree, Andy isnt worth £35 million, but lets seee what happens after this run of games he will now get,due to something else that happened…forgot what it was now… :?)…. not

  • syed says:

Well said mate, finally supporters are realising how KK has wasted a fortune on crap players, who are only good enough for middle of the table teams. We need to get a top European manager who knows a good player from an average player, at least players with technical abilities and players who can go past defenders. If the Americans knew about football they would have never authorised this idiots to purchase these players.

    • artigas cruz says:

carroll may one day be the bast goal scorer in the world, you english are just a funny bunch.

    • julius says:

Dalglish & his management should quit now.LFC needs players that can take the club forward ,not the bunch of over priced average players,dalglsh/comoli has brought to this great club.Dalglish has simply lost touch of modern football.Lfc fans are used to champions league football. With this bunch of average players Lfc would find it hard to qualify for uefa league.

  • JC says:

we all wanna get behind carroll, we all love kenny but it has to be said alot of people are still unconvinced on the buys last year. the problem is that no-one has a chance to take time to fit in straight away to the team/new system etc-todays league wont allow this. everyone has to hit the ground running, some do ,some dont and it seems -ours havent!! apart from suarez maybe and he is over compensating for the lack of service etc and can be seen to be greedy-wants the ball all the time in place maybe of being an out and out striker in the right place at the right time with tap ins a la rushy!YNWA

  • Paul S says:

    Should say Mr C has…

  • Ashfah Hussain says:

Unfortunately yes. We are in the same position as of 10 months ago.

  • lfc fan says:

I think lfc’s policy of signing is not best young player but best young flop player.

  • Will Cooper says:

I am fed up of fans like you lot. For a start, how is slating every player we buy regardless of their ability going to help them develop? It isn’t. Getting behind the players and supporting them is only going to help. Teams like City have been spending fortunes for years and only just getting results, Jo for £18m, Santa Cruz for £17m, Wright-Phillips for £9m, Robinho for £32m, Wayne Bridge, Bojinov, Caicedo this list goes on. The point im making is spending big doesnt guarantee results, but we are building a team and players like Downing and Adam help the balance of the team and we have improved from the days of Poulsen and Koncheskey. Carroll will become a top quality player, but only if he has the backing and support of the fans. YNWA.

    • Ghulam Shah says:

all the players u mentioned man city bought them liverpool got robbed full stop!

    • Rich says:

Excellent point, other teams have splurged millions but we have bought for the future. I hope and want all of our signings to come good, expecting miracles straight away is naive – I’m incensed by what appear to be fair weather supporters slating KK. We are playing decent football, the team seem happy and we must stay behind them.

We have had some good results this season and a lot of bad luck with goalkeepers choosing Anfield to play their best game, FGS open your eyes and stop slagging off a hard working team and coaching staff.

I thought the moaning would stop after G&H left but silly me.

      • teesomethang says:

yeh,we support kenny and the team but i am sure u can see that sometimes he messes up the selection of the team.how do u play stew over maxi, kuyt over bellamy? sometimes he waits till the 80th min to take out these guyz and by that time nothing really changes.yes he is a legend,he loves the team but we want results.we dont eat his legendary status.i have no doubt that kk epitomises liverpool but his actions, tactics and selections must show that he wants the team to win.granted he would not have known that stew would dissapoint but sticking with him when he is just running and producing nothing is arrogance.why not bench him like wat he is doing with andy carrol.and because of his arrogance we have lost points at home to lower teams.and u think we will get top 4 like this.u think arsenal, man u,chelsea, spurs and city will stop wining because they feel pity for liverpool whose strikers are still to find their feet?in january kk must buy a good striker, playmaker and winger and my choices are podolski and dejong, then ramirez and xaqiri

    • ANTI-carroll says:

well carroll is lucky enough to not being booed off the ground yet, and that alone is enough support for him.especially when he’s been such a flop for more than a year. kenny has been terrible in the transfer market,it dusgusts me, how he’s gone about wasting the owners money on some utterly average players

  • Flying Pig says:

Carrol was a massive mistake which may well cost KD his job. Your description of him is accurate indeed. His ability in the air is a myth.

Henderson oozes talent and class but he needs to be braver and take more responsibility and self-belief, rather than staying in the shadow of Adam or Gerrard.

Kenny’s January signings are perhaps the most important of his career. He is on thin ice right now.

    • Rich says:

Who do you support? Kenny will never be on thin ice with genuine LFC fans. Give him time – or support teams like Chelski and Newcastle who change their managers whenever the whim takes them. Glory hunters are not needed at Anfield, where is everyone’s patience?

  • siblfc says:

Admittedly Carrol and Henderson are yet to show us their best and at £35m and £16m (rising to £20m) respectively we need them to start performing, however saying that they are only young and need time. I actually think that Henderson is starting to look very good.

Yes Downing at £18m is yet to show his best form, but we have seen enough in his performances for Villa and England over the last couple of years to know he is a good player.

Adam is a good squad player but represents reasonable value at £7m.

Based on the above we have not seen good value from our £78m, but saying that would you not agree that sourcing Suarez, Enrique, Bellamy and Coates for a combined total of £35m is absolutely superb business.

So we have spent £113m since Kenny joined us and have recouped £78m. Personally I think the quality of the players and average squad age are much improved, and definitely give good value for the £35m net investment.

A good blog is about expressing an interesting argument, but if it is to be credible should be factually correct (£78m not £100m) and not be so one-sided.

    • Stevie says:

      Here Here!

    • Ghulam Shah says:

the good business bit were all foreigners! ironic eh?

    • NJReds Fan says:

Price of Carroll was simply passed on to Chelsea, no? Torres sale price was driven up by £ demand from NUFC. Carrol’s strength was his power in the air while on the move, not jumping straight up for balls knocked toward his head, and first touch shots from decent passes.

      • Rich says:

Good comment siblfc, I despair at these armchair sky sports fans who are now telling us we should have signed Ba and Cabaye- I bet most of the whingers hadnt heard of them before they joined Newcastle.

I think the signings will come good but we need the fans to get behind the players, not sulk and go quiet because we can’t break Swansea down! The players need Anfield to intimidate the opposition not be quiet because an expensive new signing has had the temerity to mis hit an ambitious pass.

I can’t believe some are calling for Kenny’s head but I comfort myself with the thought that these cannot be considered knowledgeable fans!

  • Mike Arms says:

The overall strength in depth has been improved, the potential for a star or two for the future has been improved, but we still need more quality in the first team.
One step at a time, build the squad and play a more attacking style of football. Step one acheived. Next step get back into the Champions League so we can attract the better quality player. Hopefully achieve by May 2012. Next step Summer 2012, sign the better quality players and build on the momentum to achieve more than we did the season before.
Some fans are so impatient, building a top team takes time, even with City’s billions it has taken them nearly 3 years and they are out of the Champions League already.

  • Kevin says:

Glad this was article was posted.

  • Dave Dennison says:

So what should we do? Fill the team with second rate foreigners who can’t get a move to champions league teams? I think you have forgotten how LFC has little appeal to most world class players. We need to back KK with what he’s got. Any luck in front of goal and we would comfortably be in 4th place in the Premiership. Sure it’s not good enough for LFC to finish 4th, but it’s the first step that’s the hardest. Once back in the Champions league, then we might attract better quality players.

    • LFC_Fan says:

Partially true, but yet Downing was preferred over Mata, 35mn could have brought a top quality striker, had KD not been British biased.

KD & DC has wasted 100mn & let’s accept it

    • Steven says:

Well let’s be honest here and remember we spent 20m a piece on Henderson and Downing! Carroll 35m! That’s a whopping 75m where we could have bought Mata, Benzema & Hazard at the time!
In replace of Adam I personally would have kept Aquilani that would save a further 7m!
Bellamy free and Enrique for the small fee we paid!
I have no idea what is going on and I’m sure NESV must be reluctant to open the cheque book again!!!

    • Eric says:

You’re funny Dave. Liverpool might not be able to attract most world class players but they did manage to sign Suarez. Cabaye was available for £5m during the summer but Liverpool decided to waste money on rubbish midfielders like Adam, Henderson and Downing instead. Kenny and Comolli also had the opportunity to sign Mata but they opted for the rubbish Downing instead. And how do you expect Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League with this mediocre team?

    • sperm thrower says:

dave is a clown, expecting liverpool to finish in the top four with mid table british players like adam, downing and carroll.

  • Martinmarx says:

I don’t understand the criticism towards Adam. Fair enough he’s struggle a bit to find a role in a new club with a totally different way of playing, nevermind moving from a championship club to one of the greatest ever in British footy.

Henderson and Downing, tho, are a total waste of money and space. Worst of all I could’ve told both Kenny and Comolli this beforehand. Yet Kenny keeps playing them week in, week out in an extremly naive hope they’ll come good. NEWSFLASH!!! The won’t!

Carrol I think showed signs of improving. It was never gonna be a quick fix and I suspected early on it would be a trip downhill before things would get better. As someone above said it’s easy to critcise him for Tuesday’s performance but shite like Downing and Henderson didn’t do much to help out.

In short, yes, Kenny wasted an embarrassing amount of money on mediocre players. Adam and Enrique was good signings and I’m pretty sure Adam will captain our side one day. Kenny can’t spend wisely, pick a formation wiseley or pick a team wisely. THAT’s the reason we’ll miss out on CL-footy for the 3rd year running.

  • chri5jo@hotmail.com says:

Don’t know where this person being in the last two seasons previous to this. But we have been nowhere near qualifying for the champions league and unless you want to pay a player 200000 a week they are not gonna come no matter what are name is! The past is the past, and that does not create our future.

What was you expecting of this term, unrealistic expectations. Yes we have dropped silly points, yes we have missed chance after chance. Though we are playing better football and if you show a little patience and support the players we might get somewhere.
How many times when carrol has played have we got to the by line and whipped in a cross (whipped not floated)?
One final note if these supporters where around when Shankly took over they be moaning first few years as well.

    • jimmy c says:

I too think we have wasted money on carroll, downing and adam, not one of these players
are world class, pretty rubbish to be honest, and
just to let you fans out there who have blind faith out there know i started going to liverpool games in 1977 so i think i know a good footballer
from a average or poor one,who does the scouting
for lfc these days because i dont understand how on one hand you can get a player of pure class in suarez then buy a load of crap.

  • cloudno44 says:

I think Adam and Enrique has proven to be value for money since the fee was’nt that inflated. Henderson is definitely showing improvements and is reading the game better(That through pass to Downing vs. ManCity was almost Gerrard like.. Almost..)

Though Downing has been dissapointing, he can be a good squad player, although the money invested was not for better options on bench.
But Carrol has certainly been a disappointment and a horrible bit of business from Dalgish/Comolli. I cant understand when certain media states that the guy has heaps of potential. He’s never gonna fit into the style of play Liverpool are trying to adopt. It may seem pre-mature to judge a player so soon, but those on the Carrol bandwagon should take a reality check and just accept that he never was and never will be a good enough striker for a top quality side.
Now the latest news surfacing is about a possible bid for Darren Bent. I keep praying that this is a false rumor unless the transfer fee wont be anything over 10-12 millions. I really hope John Henry demands a more reasonable usage of his money from his employees.

    • Ghulam Shah says:

henderson 1 through pass for 20 million!!

      • LFC_Fan says:

Thanks Ghulam. Every body in different blogs are trying to save KD & in most cases at the expense of Commolli, because he is French; it’s unfair. Commoli has done well so far to off load some deadwoods

  • vimal says:

if carrol n henderson cost £60…so how much cabaye n Ba can cost?

    • Eric says:

Cabaye was available for £5m during the summer but the management team decided to waste money on rubbish midfielders like Adam, Henderson and Downing instead. With this ridiculous transfer policy in targeting rubbish overpriced British players, Liverpool can forget about the top four, let alone the league title.

  • Bomber25 says:

Dalglish had an agenda of his own which defied reasonable logic. He has wasted millions on very poor to average signings.

  • SuaRed!!! says:

Young flop! How does that work?

Any young player can improve! Only players in their mid to late 20s can be a flop….e.g. Downing

  • Bahllen says:

The article is very correct. I have a lot of respect tp king Kenny but he has done a big mistake by wasting our owners money on everage players and the latest rumors that he is buying darrent bent…liverpool has become an everage team and will never will epl for another 20 years with this management. Spurs will overtake us we will be left to compete with mid table teams. More than 100 millions were gone to drain when this amount is more than enough to put liverpool back on track. King Kenny has continued the Graeme Souness legacy as the manager who caused the fall of the mighty red. Can fate change liverpool’s condition? Only a drastic action from Mr Henry. Im carrying a pain for more 20 years waiting

    • Bomber25 says:

Bahllen, You have hit the nail on the hid with your thread. Kenny Dalglish is signing players who are eventually going to get him the sack. We need a new young modern day manager whose nationality should not be an issue. YNWA.
