Would You Be Satisfied With Two Cup Victories?

IT’S all about winning trophies isn’t it, so you’d have to say winning the FA Cup on top of the Carling Cup would add up to very successful season for Liverpool. Two trophies in Kenny’s first season would be something special.

However, should they fail to get a top 4 spot, which seems to be the reality right now, then the true measure of the quality of the team will still be in question, especially with their inconsistent league form.

It seems Liverpool can raise their game for the big matches but they can’t do the same when they meet teams like Sunderland. It’s a very frustrating and telling scenario.

There’s no doubt if Liverpool win the FA Cup it would put them back at the forefront of English football with two of the three domestic trophies on the mantelpiece. It would also mean Kenny’s job would be secure for at least another season which, before the last two wins over Everton and Stoke, was starting to be questioned even more. These two critical wins have taken the pressure right off Kenny and with another trip to Wembley for the semi-final he will be the first to agree that winning the FA Cup means the season will have produce more than most would have expected.

I’ve previously written that winning the Premiership has to be the goal each and every season and that finishing in the top four cannot be the new measure of success, although still essential for a team of Liverpool’s stature along with a lucrative Champions League spot. If Liverpool’s only goal is a top four finish then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that they won’t win the league. Why? Because getting a point at home or away starts to become acceptable. The occasional loss is deemed to be inevitable and shouldn’t impact the goal of finishing in the top 4. But having the goal of winning the league means you approach every game with the view you have to win it. This is what the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have done every season. They may fail to win the Premiership but they go into each match knowing the result will impact their chances of winning the league.

At the beginning of this season, even after spending £100m, it was clear the goal for Liverpool was not the Premiership title but a top four finish and we have seriously failed in achieving that. The squad itself has come under criticism for the lack of quality but with Dalglish today announcing there will be no new players coming to Anfield in the summer unless they are outstanding then this is the squad Liverpool will be taking into next season.

It seems Dalglish is extremely happy with the performance of his players this season but I actually don’t believe we won’t see any major new signings in the summer and that we will in fact see several of the first team squad sold as the project of rebuilding Liverpool into a quality team capable of winning the Premiership continues.

Adding the FA Cup to the Carling Cup will be a fantastic achievement for Liverpool this season but if we don’t win the FA Cup then the shine will be diminished and improvement in the squad will become paramount.

No , its not what LFC is about. The league is our bread and butter as a former Red once said.

  • Souey's 'tache says:

We exist to win trophies. Just because Sky/UEFA are complicit in trying to demean anything that’s not the Champions League shouldn’t take away from the fact that we are back to winning, what all clubs set out to do – win stuff.

As a life long fan, its a difficult question, on the one hand I’m proud to be a red. Our history dictates we should be better then 7th and if we don’t put a winning run together, that could be 8th.
I respect KK and his cry for time, but…. I’m a little disappointed that he seems to suggest fans are being to demanding, KK may only have been in charge for just over a year but he spent good money last Jan and the summer and we should be doing better! I’m not suggesting we should be up there with manu and man city yet, but we should be battling for that 4th place, and we are not. So KK, give the respect back to the supporters who won’t let a bad word be said against you and stop telling me and every other fan that we are expecting too much, too soon, we are not.
We understand your protecting your players but just like me and everyone else, if I don’t do my job, after time I get my arse kicked. Winning the CC was great, yes, but we need to be in the top four, look at Newcastle if they can do it, then we have no excuses, none!

If the cups could serve as a step towards an EPL challenge next season, yes. However, our continuing, woeful record in the Premiership seems to suggest otherwise. The manner of our capitulation at Loftus Road was especially worrying, surely an unlikely sight in the days of Rafa Benitez. Dalglish has been a Messiah for Liverpool after the dark days of Hicks-Gillet and Hodgson – but is he the man to take Liverpool to the next level?

For me wining two cups and finishing 7th or 8th in the league is not except able at all. For KD to say that it will take a hell of the player to improve this team and we don’t need to buy anyone in the summer than I’m afraid we r in big trouble. If we don’t buy anyone in the summer and KD is still in charge than I won’t expect us to b any better next season.

Not for me. Would rather get 4th than both cups. We can only attract the right players if we are in the Champions league. Otherwise we will need to overpay for primising players/players from lower teams/leagues that aren’t at Champions league level.

On a positive note; I don’t think too much is needed. The football we play is greatly improved on from last season, we do need a quality sticker though. A direct right winger is also needed. Downing has hugely improved in the last month.

Kenny, is the worst manager in the English league for now, he does not deserve to be our manager, this man has disgress us all over the world, do u know how it hurt Liverpool fc fans all over the world, that a great club like Liverpool fc has played 9 premier league game this year and pick only 8 points out of 27 points and sent 19 points to a grave. This man realy want to kill many Lfc fans with heart attact, if u see how my friends are mocking at me, every mints of the day, the only thing am thinking of is of is our great club, my eyes always full of tears, how do u think that this man can win the premier league for us? That Is imporsible. Kenny does not know what he is doing, our players are not to be blam, why this is because of how this man use to approach game, just look at what happend yesterday, we have 2 goals down and this man went and make 2 wrong chenges, why should this man change suarez for his 35 million striker? This man always got every things wrong, bad team selection, bad tactic, bad changes, our team does not have fighting spirit anymore, am realy afriad. Kenny or what ever the call u, u cannot kill our great club instead our great club will kill u, no body is bigger than our great club.

With our wretched league form, I would say the FA cup is not a matter of contentment anymore, rather it is a bare necessity.
Make no mistake, if we win the FA cup I will gloat quite a bit to others, and will be proud to have two silvers, but this league form can never be satisfactory, no matter how many trophies we win.

  • Steven Teague says:

No chance! Doesn’t even come close to compensating… had we finsihed 4th even 5th it would be ok given we are a team in transition, but the current situation is no where near good enough. The squad has improved, but all in all, we ain’t made much progress and there’s little sign the football is going to get any better at the moment.

  • Vip says:

Too much of excuse for Kenny.his signings cum sentiment towards certain players reveal he is not catching up with the modern game.take a look back at the way we played in cc final after milions of pounds spent.i want to believe kenny has the ability to lift us higher, save he stop defending his mistakes so it does not lead to more mistkes. We all saw what he did with the “average”players he inherited.but he got it wrong in the transfer market. I sugest he resign.

    • Liverpool Die Hard Fans says:

Sack him now before Liverpool drop behind Swansea and at relegation position, what a shame..

  • Chan says:

KD seems to be on a 1 man mission to destroy our future. LFC had always been about the league and Europe, that means winning it, and not just be part of it.

Basically with KD, he is saying here, we just won this mickey mouse cup, we all should be happy, screw the league.

I simply can’t recall (i doubt many fans either) that we lost a match after leading 2-0 at halftime. Heck even Hodgson can’t do this, but as his usual consistent self, KD has no answer for our lost. It’s down to luck or the lack of it. So luck win games, might as well appoint the tea lady as gaffer.

Any LFC fans (barring KD fans, i said KD fans not LFC fans take note) can’t in the life of us can imagine we can regain our glory days under KD.

We are a massive 28 points behind Manure and 14 points of 4th after spending 113 mill, SO NO, I WOULD NOT BE SATISFIED WITH 2 CUPS. IT SHOULD BE 2 CUPS AND 4TH AT THE VERY LEAST.

    • Liverpool Die Hard Fans says:

To win this 2 cups is really a luck. But talking about premiere league it really show how bad Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish. It is even worst than Roy Hodgson, please bring back Rafael Benitez.Kenny Dalglish must resign and out now!!!

    • charlie says:

don’t be so short-sighted. if you can’t see that we have made progress this season then you are either blind or haven’t been watching. Winning 2 cups would be better than we have done for 6 years. I suppose if we had your way we would have a new manager every year until we won the league?

  • ashley says:

NO!!!!!!!!!!! We should be playing champions league footbal….BRING BACK RAFA

  • red.red says:

we havent won the f.a yet shutup untill we do. I dont see us beating chelsea anymore
