FORMER Liverpool FC winger Harry Kewell has quit his club, Melbourne Victory and will return to England for family reasons.

Kewell who is now aged 33, joined the two-time A-League champions prior to last season and scored 8 goals in 25 appearances during the campaign.

However he has now chosen to stay in England to be with wife Sheree Murphy, whose mother is seriously ill.

Liverpool’s former no.7 said: “It was one of the toughest decisions we’ve had to make.

“I enjoyed playing for Victory and living in Melbourne, but family comes first and together we made a decision that it was best for us to remain close to our family at this time.”

The Australian’s coach at Melbourne, Ange Postecoglou is disappointed at losing his player, but understands the reasons, stating:

“Harry’s a fantastic player and I was looking forward to working with him this season, but he has family matters that need his attention so while it’s unfortunate, I completely understand.

“We’d been working very hard to come to an agreement with him and we were extremely confident both parties were close to finalising the deal, but these things happen and we wish Harry and his family all the best.”

Has there ever been a player that promised so much and garnered such excitement, yet returned so very little in his time with the Reds?

Meanwhile the man who signed Kewell for Liverpool as manager, Gerard Houllier, has joined Austrian champions Salzburg – forming part of a new-look set-up as the club’s Global Sports Director.

The Frenchman joins alongside Roger Schmidt, who was named as Salzburg’s head coach, and Ralf Rangnick – himself, linked as a possible Reds coach around 18 months ago – who becomes the club’s Sporting Director.

Jimmy Areabi (Editor) - @fantasista1077: Huyton raised like Steven Gerrard, football has been my passion since the time I received a Kenny Dalglish badge as a toddler, and I've followed the Reds ever since – something that was easier during the 80s, when I worshipped John Barnes! I've produced work for many football media outlets & am now happy to run a major site on the club I love - providing our fans with a voice, and to bring as much information and news on the club as possible.
Having played football all my life, I aim to continue longer than Stanley Matthews...
