Jonjo Shelvey

|

The one thing that impressed me most about Jonjo in this match was his maturity when we went down to 10. With Sama off, Shelvey was called into the back 4 playing both full-back slots, communicating well with the younger lads around him. Very impressive. At the start of the match we saw perhaps the ‘most improved’ side of his game as his eagerness and strength in a tackle led to fouls and with this ref, I’m surprised he didn’t show the super secret purple card! Yet as the game progressed and (prior to the red) Shelvey settled into a deeper central role, he was able to pull the strings and displayed a fantastic range of long passing allowing the team to switch play and exploit space. Note, I said long passing not long balls as these were inch perfect onto the boots of Suso, Sterling and Morgan. There is no doubt, never has been, that Jonjo is a player and has the potential to be a big player for us as long as he can build on the mature displays like Monday night and have that patience to learn from those around him.

I've produced work for many football media outlets & am now happy to run a major site on the club I love - providing our fans with a voice, and to bring as much information and news on the club as possible.
