‘That’s What We Call History’ – And Here’s Why It Matters

LIVERPOOL FC’s recent slip in form has resulted in their worst league standing in 18 years, leaving an increasing number of fans turning away silently and pointing to the past for comfort – and they have every right to do so.

A Chelsea fan I know began relishing their FA Cup success while we watched the match together. I, in response, duly sang a Kop classic that, to put it simply, reveals how in the past glory was familiar only to the colour Red.

Protests immediately followed from him questioning the purpose of the past and how it means nothing now.

I shall confess, for a moment I nearly considered his point.

To defend myself and the importance of Liverpool’s illustrious, earlier days, I begin in a high school history course. My professor confronted us with an anecdote of a man who loved sailing, and even more his ship. As he sailed and the effects of time set in, the man had to repair and replace certain pieces of it. If the ship eventually contained none of the original pieces, is it the same?

With thought, I would like to believe so. The quality, purpose, values, and virtues of the man that he put into building the ship remained consistent, and thus coincide with the ship itself. The same can be said about Liverpool Football Club.

18 League Titles, 7 FA Cups, 8 League Cups, 5 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups, total to 41major honours won by Liverpool Football Club. Yes, more than any other English side (knock on wood).

Names like Shankly, Paisley, Dalglish, and Gerrard all represent Liverpool football despite their mixed roles and eras. Aspects such as hard work, creativity, strength, and poise, are all crafted into the football played by the Red Men. It will never leave, and it can never be sold. There may very well be a season, years even, where a club uncharacteristically does not meet its standards, but the significant part is that those standards are there are, and represent what a club is and always will be about.

The philosophy of a football club and all that goes into it are what makes the top clubs what they are, be it Barcelona, Manchester United, or LFC. It takes that philosophy and all the aspects of it to hoist a club up, and to do such with the means of 41 total honours speaks for itself.

Though our present form has been dipping due to whatever reason your opinion may hold, the club’s virtues and outlook have proved themselves before and will shine through again to propel Liverpool back to the greatness for which they are known.

So go ahead Reds, belt songs about it, bask in it confidently, point to it, and grin.

History will repeat itself.

I want the owners out can’t stand American owners after what happened!! The way we are now we need a good Arab to come in spend millions on the team new stadium and push us forward. Look at city that is what we need im afraid

So you want us to be a rich mans play thing do you? GET REAL!

LFC are unique in that our owners are not rich business men looking for a hobby, they are men who got rich by being in the business of running sports teams! They are less likely to bleed the club dry or to cut and run when the going gets tough like other owners.

The see us as a challenge, a sick entity, something they can gain enormous satisfaction from by resurrecting to our former glory.

They may be american, and yes we were ar*e raped by americans but NESV / FSG know sports business and are making genuine moves to understand the sport of football. (you need to understand a business to succeed in that business) I for one believe we are better off under them than under any other owner regardless of how much more money they may have

FSG did NOT get rich by being in the business of running sports teams. JW got rich in Forex and futures trading..and FSG were a complete disaster in Fla and were forced to sell the team at a loss. The Sox have the 2nd highest payroll in MLB and they spend like drunken sailors in Bangkok! So lets get the facts right before putting them on a pedestal. They DO NOT employ moneyball in Boston..they employ Sabermetrics but are not shy about dropping stupid money and mediocre crap (exactly what they have done with us).

I for one would love for the club to get bought by a rich middle easterner. Every club that has won titles has done so by spending big money.. to think we are somehow different is delusional and stuck in the past..

Yes we made great histoy because we had a GREAT team with TOP players,+ management with passion for the club and for football. To repeat it again, we need to invest in two or three TOP players to strenghthen the team.As everyone knows its getting more difficult to win the title each year as we can see other teams are getting better to beat. And I think its about time a club as big as ours wins a tile.

At the present we r where we r cos somebody called Purslow decided that it was time to replace a CHL winner in R Benitez with LMA mngr of the year R Hodgson. We didn’t win the league with him but we came very close. We were feared around Europe. Nobody wanted to b drawn in the same group as us. Made Liverpool number one in Europe. As for the history mate YES we have great history. But there is no point to go back and remember it every time we finish 7th or 8th. We need to move on and look to the future. But the future, I hope I’m wrong in this but doesn’t look better than last two or three years. Just looking at the players Chelsea and MC r being linked with and one look at the players we r being linked it doesn’t look good at all.

  • We can say because of money but Mcity had been save to success only of the 5mins injury time for Liverpool there were some artificial defeat where opponents benefit some artificial winning that’s come from both manager and players * POSITIVISM* not only changing manager and player can solve problems not even money
