This Signing Could Mark The Beginning of The End For Shelvey

IF in fact Gylfi Sigurdsson follows Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool, Jonjo Shelvey’s role in the team will require careful decision-making by both club and player.

Sigurdsson was to be a record signing for Swansea City before Rodgers left, and there was plenty of reason for him to be. From what I’ve seen of him, he certainly has potential to exploit. His spot kicks are excellent, his attacking ability and habit to produce as well as sustain activity in the offensive third are aspects that have fallen shy at Liverpool. If he were to form a strong bond with Steven Gerrard, it would certainly only generate more offensive prowess and perhaps allow Steven to play wider and utilize his delivery more.

While no signing comes without examination of the talent at hand, it is a transfer which would have many eyes solely on Jonjo Shelvey. In all honesty, Shelvey’s skill often causes me to forget that he is merely 20-years old. The loan spell was a great influence on the lad. In my eyes, his confidence has increased, and his execution has begun to match the excellent vision he contains.

Again, he is only 20-years old. He is I feel exhibiting progress and undoubtedly developing – as his remarkably composed screamer in the Chelsea game would suggest. The focus for me thus becomes the rate at which he is doing so, and if LFC can afford to wait. I do not want to get rid of him, but I also believe signing Sigurdsson would be of value. He is also young at only 22 years of age, and could really find his form at the club under a manager with whom he is familiar backed by standards that only exert the best if indeed the player is a match.

With that, I don’t feel it would be regressive to loan Shelvey out once more. I know his dedication and heart is with Liverpool, as he has stated his admiration for Gerrard, but one must be objective in order to succeed. Also, so long as it is a loan and not a transfer, I am sure he realizes it would not only be in his best interest but in the club’s that he holds in his heart as well.

I would also understand if Shelvey was kept rather than loaned. He has earned the stay and should only improve. If we sign Sigurdsson, I would like to believe that the competition would breed greatness as standards are constantly raised to earn a spot on the starting line up. The best athletes are those with self-motivation and a sincere desire to work to their full ability with the hopes of success, a trait I believe to see with delight in Shelvey.

While the rumour activity has seemingly settled with Gylfi – at least what the public knows – such could be a calm before the storm, and I for one am currently open to change.

Good Thought but you shoul remember that our captain is 32. So having two young Lads should do for the future.

  • jasonm says:

Yeah, as said, Gerrard is not getting any younger and we need his replacement, Sigurdsson and Shelvey can be groomed while Gerrard is still fit and can be used when Gerrard is not.

  • royce says:

Moving Shelvey on i dont think so he looks better than Henderson and Adam they should get the flick before him.

    • turks says:

Agree with you there Royce, Shelvey is a far superior player to Adam and Henderson and with the right coaching could occupy a number of different positions.

Sigurdson would be an excellent signing and would like to to see Jordy Clasie of Feyenoord and some sort of pre contract arrangement with Joe Allen, possible buy and loan back for 12 months.

I think this would solve our problems in midfield for the long term and would allow us to offload the likes of Adam, Henderson and Downing which in turn would probably slash a fair chunk from the wage bill.

      • royce says:

Would like to see Clasie and or possibly Allen too i think Liverpool could have a huge midfield for years to come.

      • PeterLFC says:

Henderson will come good I cant believe no one has mentioned moving spearing on he is way short of the mark time for wee jay to go.

  • You heard says:

We can not afford to loan him out again. The kid is fiesty and that is exactly what Liverpool needs. Hendo is young and is very passive, spearing should be shown the door. Stevie will need rest after the Euro’s so we need as much help as possible. The only one I trust (that is on the roster as of now) is Shelvey. It may just be me but I see a little Zadane in him. Big guy with excellent vision, passing and always looking to score. If Shelvey becomes half of what Zadane brought then the future looks very bright for both player & club….

  • SuaRed says:

    Why get rid of anybody?

    • turks says:

SuaRed, agree that we should keep Shelvey but there are certain players within the squad who have been given a full season to perform and show their worth and simply have not delivered!

For those reasons I think we need to look at offloading Henderson, Adam and Downing!

As was mentioned above by Youheard, it is a matter of trust and I’d have to say that I’d trust Shelvey, Suso and Pacheco ahead of Adam or Henderson any day off the week!
The same would go for Stelring, I’d pick him over Downing every time!

We can’t maintain this ethos of believing the under performers in the squad will eventually come good, it is a luxury we cannot afford.

      • Paul Smith says:

Couldn’t agree more, except that I’d prefer Suso and Teixeira to be given the chance to be part of LFC midfield rather Shelvey.

    • mal james says:

The answer to that is that Adam is woeful and Spearing is only good enough to be a squad player if the club is short of midfield players, which it isn’t. Both should be shown the door.

  • Marco says:

    rubbish
why sale shelvey when you can get rid of Adam, Henderson and Spearing

  • Pablo says:

Exactly SuaRed, this is a shoddy article based on the senseless premiss that you can’t have both of them in the same squad let alone team…utter nonsense…one of the drawbacks of supporting a great club is that there are so many twonks spouting sh*te about it

  • nick says:

Spearing should be first to go, then Adam so I don’t think Shelvey at his age and ability should be worried.

  • mal james says:

Not the end for Shelvey, but certainly for Adam – surely the worst player to plod his way round the Liverpool midfield for many years

  • Noblelox says:

I’m with Marco, just because they are similar, does not make them mutually exclusive, we could use both and sell Adam instead. I really don’t think Brendan will rate Adam’s style of play at all. The others are young and adaptable, just because they have all been seen as the next Steven Gerrard, does not mean we can’t deploy a couple per match.

  • Spousebob says:

If its the end of anybody it’s the end of Adam or spearing! Anyone can see that shelveys got potential to excel and Jordan Henderson should be given a chance and I think Rodgers will retain the latter.

  • ds says:

I hope we’ll keep Shelvey and get rid of Adam.
Also, I would prefer us to develop Shelvey, Henderson and Sigurdsson, and if we must, let one go out on loan at one of the preimer league’s small clubs. To be honest, I would prefer Henderson to go out on loan rather than Jonjo

  • AJ says:

Shelvey will stay and fight for his place. Simple as that. He’s a good player with plenty of drive.

We need strength in depth. Why are we writing our good young talent off every time there’s talk of a new player on the scene?

  • IGOCHE LFC says:

DAni aves, mata, yaya, and so more miss. now gaston ramirez, till man city get this lad. can suarez talk to he just as he do in coates. GOD RESTORE MY LIVERPOOLFC from NIGERIA

  • SAM CHARLES says:

Dont understand why fans and so called media people think that just because liverpool buy a new player another has to then be moved on.

These players as it stands should not at the moment be 1st teamers at the club anyway.

shelvey, adam, spearing, henderson, – they all should not be 1st teamers at all. – But that does not mean that we sell them.

In fact next year we have much to much football,
bellamy cant play game after game, gerrard gets an injury once a year now, agger, johnson, get knocks very much at the drop of a hat, add lucus coming back form a bad long term problem then thats nearly 40 % team that has been and does get bad injuries!!!!

For me id like these sold to free up wage bill and then use that money for better value and then bring in that better quality player for the wage that they require.

    OUT- COLE,AQUILANI,BRAD JONES GK,WILSON,ECCLESTON, PACHECO,ADAM,

    GONE- DARBY, KUYT, AURELIO

IN – EVER BANEGA, GASTON RAMIREZ, ALY CISSOKHO,GYLFI SIGUROSSON, ISAAC CUENCA,EDISON CAVANI

The problem with media and some fans is that we try to get into the managers’ minds using our own limited opinions and we do it continuously until we believe our own crap and make everyone else believe our without realising we are undermining the manager and 99% of the time actually affecting their plans and performance. BR has picked a team, and yet we making so many(pos&neg) suggestions. I’m a strong Rafa fan, but at this moment i strongly believe Rodaz can take us places,we only ever dreamed of,if given the chance to implement his philosophies. Most problems on the pitch actually start in the media. Lets all just get behind him and stop allowing ourselves to be furastrated when Rodaz does his own thing, even if it doesnt come off initially…YNWA

Shelvey MUST not go anywhere, he is a great talent who should serve us for years to come, lets get that right.
