American (and) Joe In, While FSG Call £20 Million ‘Toon’?

REPORTS from various media outlets this morning have suggested that Liverpool FC will add to last week’s signing of Fabio Borini by bringing both Clint Dempsey and Joe Allen to Anfield.

Whilst rumour has it that it won’t be all one-way traffic heading into the club; with £20 million apparently being the magic number Newcastle United need to meet if they want to bring Andy Carroll back to ‘Toon’.

Liverpool’s Radio City this morning reported that the club have edged closer to securing the signature of American forward Clint Dempsey, for a fee in the region of £6 million. The Reds look keen to add the versatile Fulham star to a new-look attacking system which includes new signing Fabio Borini.

Scoring goals was the Achilles heel at Anfield last season and with the recent departures of Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez, the Reds are in need of additional firepower – something which Dempsey had in abundance last season, when he hit 23 goals and attained 7 assists in 37 appearances.

Last week it was thought that Fulham, fully aware of Liverpool’s interest in their star man (who has just one year left on his contract), would offer a swap deal involving Andy Carroll. Dempsey’s signature would surely put the big Geordie’s place in the Reds squad in further jeopardy, however Liverpool are thought to want far more for any deal involving their record £35 million signing – something which has now been relayed to Newcastle United, after their initial bid of £13 million was turned down.

£20 million is the magic number said to be acceptable to Liverpool’s owners FSG, who will sanction the £15 million loss if Newcastle come knocking again. Liverpool’s apparent willingness to court interest would suggest his days at the club are numbered, and that has dismayed the striker whose instinct was to remain a Red after settling on Merseyside after a difficult start.

If he were to leave Anfield, Carroll would prefer a return back to the North-East, but as the latest reports suggest, the key to that deal happening lies with the club’s owner, Mike Ashley.

Speaking to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today, Toon Army manager Alan Pardew stated:

“That whole process is a little bit more involved with the chairman and the board at Liverpool. We have got a great team here, a great squad, and if Andy Carroll comes, it will only add to us. It’s simple, really. Sometimes transfers are done at corporate level. I’m slightly detached from that. It will be what it will be.

“It’s been said that he’s available and if we are involved, then we will be involved because of the figures, not anything else, because we know he’s good enough.”

Back to the potential new faces heading to Anfield this summer and according to The Telegraph (to name just one of many), Brendan Rodgers has moved a step closer to being reunited with yet another of his young prodigies (after capturing Borini on Friday) by signing Swansea City midfield star Joe Allen.

It had been thought an agreement was in place between Swansea and their former coach, in which Rodgers would not raid the Welsh side for any players. However Allen himself is thought to have asked the Swans not to deny him the opportunity to join the Reds, after being made aware of Liverpool’s serious interest.

The Reds could look to push through a deal before the Olympic Games begin, when Allen will be representing Team GB (alongside Craig Bellamy), whilst a fee similar to what the Reds paid for Borini should secure the Welshman’s services.

no way is he worth the same amount paid for Borini so i am sure if that were the case then the swans would sell up!

  • FACE FACTS says:

LFC Fans dont want Caroll to be sold to Newcastle

  • nick says:

Carrol back to Toon would irk me somewhat, what with Ashley taking the mick ever since the deal was done to bring him to LFC. However, it’s BR’s side now and he shouldn’t be to blame for others mistakes. Cutting the loss and putting the extra cash to use would be good business after terrible form last season and yes, he did improve, but still come on people – he isn’t that good lets face it.

  • alfonzo mo says:

carroll is ok if you want to lump the ball forward. one of the reason he wasnt a success last year is due to kenny not entirely playing to his strengths. we tried to play footy with him in the hope that he might get on the end of an odd cross. not good enough for us and certainly not good enough for the new type of game we will play. new front three all about movement and pace. allen wont come due to rodges’ agreement with swansea. also unsure if we are genuinely into clint due to his age, but would be a good buy.

  • tony says:

the american owners want dempsey simple . We are all dreaming of something like tello 7mil ramirez 15mil walcott 12mil 34MIL . walcott will give carroll service he gave van persie look how many assist.

    • john says:

walcott is a waster gives ball away 8 times out of 10 even his own fans dont want him go for johnson from city much better

  • alfonzo mo says:

the majority of supporters were slating big andy last year and now while we try and sell him there are those looking to keep him saying hes a great player. hes not good enough, poor control, too ponderous, no pace, limited technique. but physical great. get real and get rid.

  • alfonzo mo says:

tony are you tryin to seriously compare andy with rvp???

    • tony says:

clear to see you cant read what it said was theo walcotts final pass to van persie last year ? if he does that at liverpool carroll will kill it?

  • AndyMac says:

£20m ??? You are having the proverbial 🙂

He was way overpriced when you bought him but just because you were stupid enough to pay that amount doesnt mean that others have to join the lunatic asylum (that is Liverppol FC) to buy him back ?

    • Prole79 says:

I’m a Pool fan, and agree with you 100 per cent! He is worth about 9 million, max!

  • Hope says:

Lt frgt about buyin anyone 2 feed carrol, let thnk of hw we cn make it next season. i imagine spending money 2 buy players just 2 feed only one so called striker by name carrol.let b reasonable,hw many teams hav wasted lot of money just 2 feed one striker.these r ridiculous.carrol go bac hme

  • alfonzo mo says:

we paid double the odds for carroll and now trying desperately to claw back some of the lost millions. perhaps that is the reason some think carroll is actually any good. furthermore i suggest you go back to youre lunatic asylum andymac

    • Trolololol says:

shut up you little stalker alfonzo you must be another idiot that assumes theyre always right, you probably belong in a lunatic asylum

      • alfonzo mo says:

do you agree that lfc is a lunatic asylum as andy mac suggests, you brown squirt. also i dont always think im right but the market shows now that andy may only be worth 10-15. idiot

  • Elias says:

If big andy has the desire for playing in newcastle then we must let him go coz liverpool needs players who give it 100 % red.and some one tell BR THAT ramirez should be bought immediatly.we need world class players

    • zahid says:

If Brendan Rodgers doesn’t see Carroll in his plans, which is his right, then what do you expect Carroll to do? he’s obv going to look at other clubs

  • Ebri says:

Sell Carroll and bring in players who can produce. That’s all.

  • Effect says:

Sell carroll! Get Joe Allen, Client Dempsey and Ramirez. Downing, Adams, Spearing should follow Carroll.

  • DCMag says:

Love the Toon. Don’t want Carroll. He is the antithesis of our new style. He belongs at Stoke or some other small, choppy pitch.

  • Bekim says:

No big name player as yet. Gone r the days when we were being linked with world class players. We’ve gone from being linked with Ramirez, Joveti? to Dempsey, Allen and Borini. I hope BR gets it right. I really do. Just not very promising.

    • zahid says:

Would you rather be linked with big named players or actually have them at the club? Over the years we’ve been linked with them all and nothing much materialised right now we can’t attract the big players due to finances, not competing for league titles and not being in the CL.

  • zahid says:

FSG’s own policy of not buying players over a certain age seems to not apply if your American in this case Dempsey. They are desperate to see him join and Brendan is a fan of his as well so this transfer will happen and i think it will be this week.

Carroll apparently isn’t happy at not being given a chance by Brendan but he only wants a loan move not a permanent transfer, but it’s up to the gaffer n the club to decide whats best.

  • BillytheFish says:

Smacks of Robbie Keane to me.

If I was Andy Carroll I would sit tight as Rogers will be gone by Xmas..Out of his depth!

    • zahid says:

That’s why he wants a loan move n not a perm transfer he probly thinks the same.

I don’t tho im optimistic about Brendan hes sais all the right things since arriving and his kind of football is eyecatching, i can’t see FSG sacking him hes they’re man so unless he gets us relagated he will be here for sometime

      • Red Sonny says:

BR hasn’t even had a game yet and yous are already slagging him off, call your selfs reds – don’t make me laugh.
You should give him all the support you can untill proved otherwise.

  • StevenGJ says:

Lets all laugh at Liverpool…. I wonder will you be able to recoup your money on Henderson….. prob not MUPPETS

  • peter says:

i agree with billythefish come xmas i can see br gone ,how many times are we going to change the system at liverpool bloody hell i believe carroll can score 18 plus goals a season and we didnt have a player like that and i know caroll didnt score many goals but at least the lad should be giving a chance !! he is not one dimensional he score score with head and feet and just needs time and a good system that supports his game ,not acceptable to spend that amount on him then sell him for smaller ….grow a pair of balls rodgers and give this guy a chance !!

  • peter says:

@steven gj why dont u tell us who u do support ??
