BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC journalist Ben Smith have said that Liverpool Football club are on the verge of signing Roma striker Fabio Borini.

Borini, who was with Rodgers at Chelsea as a youth team player and again at Swansea during their promotion winning season, is likely to be re-united with his former boss by the weekend.

The deal, which has not yet been fully completed, is likely to be for a fee in the region of £8 million.

Rodgers had said at a press conference given earlier today that he hoped Liverpool would be able to announce the signing at least one new player by the end of the week and Borini is said to be that man.

Borini scored nine goals for Roma in Serie A last season and played a crucial role in Swansea’s promotion push in the previous campaign, scoring six goals in nine games as the Swans reached the Premier League via the play-offs. Roma permanently signed the player last week after securing the rights for him in a blind auction with fellow Serie A outfit Parma, the result of a co-ownership saga, for £3.8 million.

Should the transfer be completed within the timescale set down by Rodgers earlier on today,  the 21 year old striker is likely to join up with the rest of the Liverpool squad for the pre-season tour to North America.

  • Danny says:

Wasnt to keen when I first heard of this, but the more I read of him the better he sounds but I’m hoping this isn’t the exciting transfer that all us fans will love ???? , hoping that will be gaston Ramirez class player how people can slate him ? Have they even seen him play? Obviously not . Any way looking forward to the new season under brendan rogers YNWA

    Gaston ramirez is d next

I am happy bcos I av begin to see it that changes would surely come to Liverpool, but pls Mr Rodgers we need Gaston Ramirez, because he is the only surprise I am looking forward to seeing.

  • Fivelamps says:

Seriously underwhelmed no Italian has cut it at LFC so far…cut price footie and mid table mediocrity here we come…Dempsey next no doubt to sell more shirts to yank teenagers……..

  • Elias says:

Gaston ramirez is being monitored by napoli so we need ramirez first before the others steal him from our noses

  • Steven says:

Datz a gud move Mr. Rodgers. I’ll also like to see the likes of Gaston Ramirez @ Anfield.

  • NJRedsFan says:

The cynicism, doom and gloom, and xenophobia on these postings aren’t going to help anyone, especially not the team support. Does anyone really think Dempsey, at a decent price wouldn’t be a solid addition to the team. He’s strong, creative, aggressive, can pass and can score. If LFC sells more shirts to Yank teens then all the better. Borini has already had a taste of English football with both Swansea and Chelsea, he’s not coming in as a complete unknown. You could point your finger to most any footballing nation and find players who have failed in England. Let Rodgers pick his team and work with them before anyone starts to try to pick them apart. That’s not the work a proper LFC fan, that’s the work of the Manc press.

    • Fivelamps says:

Call it anyway you like – it still smacks of football on a shoestring – a marque signing like Ramirez is what is required – as for xenophobia looking through the comments above no one could be accused of a racist or nationalist view I merely mentioned – FACT – that no Italian player has so far cut it at LFC – that’s not a swipe at Italians in general or any nationality in particular – however the imperative of globalisation does mean that some players are not going to be bought for footballing reasons – so go ahead and accuse me of cynicsm doom and gloom all you want – fact remains that as earth shattering signings go if it is Borini and Dempsey then all I’m feeling is a dull thump. The work of the so called LFC football fan is not to be some obedient drone accepting whatever pap the publicity machine puts out but actually to say it the way that it is – Rodgers deserves a break but don’t try to pretend that everything is hunk dory

      • Fivelamps says:

Of course Hunk Dory a quarterback for the Tampa River all stars can probably be converted to offense for LFC and come on after one of the timeouts when the mascot has run up and down the pitch a few times… no offence YNWA

I’m sorry but i think Dempsey is a verry average player who enjoys a good season in a team which suits him well.
At Anfield, the player have to play IN the system and the system is not made for someone.

  • chester says:

Fabio Borini never heard of him but in Bred i strust.

  • james yeboah says:

that is good ideal to sign such a player. Jah bless. YNWA

  • fidel says:

obviously Borini isnt the exciting signing which BR was talking about since it is only today that the player and his agent are considering the interest from lfc. BR sounded like the deal he was talking about was only waiting for finishing touches and therefore in an advanced stage, which in Borini’s case isnt. I think Borini will be our second signing and i would welcome a player of his abilities, but i think our first signing will indeed be someone everyone can be excited about. Ramirez anyone?

    • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

Anyone waiting for Ramirez to become a Red may be waiting a very long time. He is most likely off to Napoli, who desperately want him after losing Levezzi to PSG. Our name is being used to drive his price up.
