What Price For Skrtel?

THERE has been talk recently that Liverpool FC’s Slovakian centre-back Martin Skrtel could be on his way out this summer after his agent, Karol Csonto, suggested Liverpool’s player of the season last campaign wants assurances on the future direction of the club to see if they match his own ambitions.

Our question to you is simple – for the right price, is Martin Skrtel a saleable asset?

Off the back of a great season at the heart of the Reds defence and with two years left on his contract, for me, Skrtel should be valued at around £15million (at least) – a valuation I feel is fair given today’s average transfer fee. It is yet unknown whether any team would be willing to offer that particular fee for his services, however, if a team does come in with an offer of the best part of £15million for the Slovak then I believe it should be given some consideration. It is about time Liverpool stamped their authority when it comes to other clubs looking to buy players from us and, in my opinion; every club that offers below the £15million mark should be met with a stern ‘thanks, but no thanks’.

Despite impressing last season and forming what looks like a fantastic partnership with Daniel Agger at the heart of the Liverpool defence, a significant offer for Skrtel should be looked at by Rodgers, as it is not an amount of money that should be sniffed at. His career has been up and down at Anfield and, after having a fantastic first 12 months at Liverpool, his form dipped considerably before returning to his brilliant best in 2011/2012. Liverpool fans must also note that Skrtel is no spring chicken and turns 28 before the turn of the year and a fee of around £15million could afford us the opportunity to bring in a younger, perhaps better centre-half.

As for potential replacements for Skrtel, there is one name in particular being bandied about. Fernando Amorebieta of Athletic Bilbao has been linked with Liverpool and some rumours suggest a bid is imminent for the Spanish centre-back. Skrtel is actually only three months older than Amorebieta which means signing him would not be anything to do with age and possibly to do with talent. Another centre-back who has been linked with Liverpool in the past is Diego Godin and the 26 year old Uruguayan would be a great signing, further strengthening the Reds’ ties with South America.

I don’t believe Martin Skrtel will leave Liverpool this summer and, for me, his agent’s comments earlier in the summer were simply a negotiation tactic in order to get Skrtel on a better salary. I also would prefer it if the Slovakian stayed as his partnership with Agger could become a formidable one. What do you think? Would you sell Skrtel for the right price? Or was his form last year proof that he is one of the best in the Premier League?

Skrtel doesn’t do aswell when Dagger isn’t fit & in centre with him, just a thought on my part anybody think we could strengthen with the balance of a fee?

I can’t stand players or agents whom after one good season want promises and make demands. This article is correct in that he’s been up and down during his time at Anfield and also players forget the time that is invested in them to become the player they are today. If any players want out the let them go. For 15 mil we can get a decent replacement and or play CoAtes that guy is pure class

      HI Dizo,
Care to explain why this is ‘rubbish’? The ambiguity of your comment indicates you haven’t got a client what you are talking about and your beautifully crafted spelling suggest your intelligence is that of a five year old. Nevertheless, please share with us your definition of rubbish?

I don’t understand why teams let their players go so easily just because they, all of a sudden, decide they want to play somewhere else, usually for more money. The player wanted the security of a multi-year contract as much as the team wanted to secure their services. The teams all capitulate and give in, screwing up plans the manager had in place. The team should look at the potential losses they may take and demand that if the player wants to go.

I’d take anything above £10m for Skrtel. Best of a bad bunch last season.

I’d sell Agger now and Skrtel next season, ideally.

    Both are replaceable.

  • Anthony Finnigan says:

lescott cost 24m so skrtel is worth 25m cos everton dug there tere heels in like kenny did with torres but brendan hasnt seen that type ov dough

  • Mike says:

If Man City can stump up £25m, i bet Brendan Rodgers will sell Skrtel. A pretty good defender, but not as classy as Agger. With the 25m, we could easily buy Mario Fernandez or Fernando Amorebieta or Mahammadou Sakho, and still have some change to spare.

    • hyperbeat says:

I say sell if offered +20 mill and then buy Aggers national team.mate Kjaer for cheap, he is a top young defender plus he is a Liverpool fan. Not to mention that he is danish and obviously knows Agger

  • Shane Meyer says:

If he wants to leave let him go. I think its time for Coates to step up. He didn’t get best young player of the South American cup for nothing. Trust the youth and they surprise you pleasantly.

  • Chan says:

If any club is willing to fork out AT LEAST 20 mill, yes lets talk. We are well stocked in this dept, Coates, Wilson, Kelly, etc

  • steven says:

i hate seeing some of our best players been linked with other clubs ,how mny times has it happened that we sold players at the right pricebut failed to replace them at the right price .it was great to see suarez come join us even tho torres left but javi alonso and masherano they were 2 big losses lucky enough that lucas stepped up and fair play to him for that all the terrible abuse he suffered from sites and look at him now..but not getting away from the point we need to build and keep building and keep our good players and sell the ones that dont work out simple really i hope brendan rogers and the board can see this simple approach…im sure everyone reading this can too ..ynwa
