How The Truth Was Reported Today

After a momentous day yesterday, many of us are still coming to terms with what we now know.  We always knew the truth, but never could any of us have conceived of the level of the cover-up that was perpetrated by the press and South Yorkshire police.

Not unexpectedly, such news makes the front pages and headlines of most of the reputable papers this morning:

Liverpool Echo’s Paddy Shennan –

‘At the end of the Hillsborough Family Support Group’s mid-afternoon press conference in Liverpool Cathedral, I hugged Margaret Aspinall, its tearful but beaming chairwoman, who then grabbed my arm and said: “Wasn’t that brilliant?”

Yes, it was. It was punching-the-air brilliant. Because it was a day which provided much more than many of us had believed possible.’

From Tony Barret in the Times

‘A scriptwriter couldn’t have created a day like today. I never thought my admiration for the Hillsborough families could grow any more. Today it did. Exceptional people. If anyone should see Bishop James Jones or other HIP members today be sure to shake them by the hand. They’ve done a wonderful thing.’

David Conn of the Guardian

‘Throughout a momentous day at Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral for the families of the 96 people who died so needlessly at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough football ground, one phrase dominated above all else: the truth.’

Henry Winter in the Telegraph

‘Wednesday was a hugely significant day… The families’ long, dignified and relentlessly resilient campaign was vindicated. The police did tamper with statements. They did orchestrate a cover-up of unbelievable size and criminality.

Liverpool’s supporters were exonerated. They were not drunk. They were not ticketless. The truth was found. But closure?

There can’t be.’

And, as far afield as the New York Times

‘For Liverpool… the report, and Mr. Cameron’s apology, had a profound emotional impact… Against that backdrop, the developments on Wednesday were taken by many in the city as a vindication’
