Rodgers Liverpool defeatBRENDAN Rodgers has reflected on Liverpool’s disappointing loss to Southampton, admitting that the team just were not as good as they should have been.

The Reds had not lost their previous four games, even achieving their first win against a top four team this season when they defeated Spurs 3-2 last Sunday before they fell 3-1 to Southampton.

There was one spark of hope for Liverpool, however, when Philippe Coutinho netted a goal to bring Liverpool back into the game; his second for the club and yet more proof that he was an impressive acquisition.

Rodgers was not happy with Liverpool’s overall performance in the game however, and said to the club’s official website:

“We just weren’t very good, it’s as simple as that. Whenever you start a game the way we did, it’s very, very difficult at this level to get back. We only started to play when we went 2-0 down. We got it back to 2-1 and were better in the second half, but then conceded another very poor goal.

“If you concede the goals we conceded today, it’s always going to be difficult to win games. Offensively we were bright, created chances and could have scored more than one goal, but we didn’t defend well enough – and you have to give credit to Southampton as well because they played well.”

Both Jamie Carragher and Lucas were dropped for the match with injuries (though Lucas would feature in the second half) and were replaced by Martin Skrtel and Joe Allen.

“We’ve played a lot recently with three midfield players in there and it gives us the chance to control and dominate the game,” Rodgers explained.

“Unfortunately this week, we had a couple of players that had niggles and hadn’t had a full weeks’ training – like Lucas Leiva. We put Lucas on in the second half and he was excellent.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

This clown is taking us nowhere . I have never seen a more clueless manager at a top club

    • Nkem Tony says:

To be honest, the clown who called himself Sergent Rodgers is clueless and cannot take us anywhere. He is causing hypertension to Liverpool FC. I hope as we make preparations for new players in the summer, we should also shop for a new coach.

My mind is telling me that most of the players are not happy with the dude. He is planning to go for Williams of Swansea, he wants to relocate all the Swans to Liverpool. Except for Continho, all the players he bought are clueless like him especially Borini.

      • H says:

We are 7th in the league – have a look where we have finished in the last few years.
Hypertension..? Were you supporting Liverpool when we had the previous two owners at the club, who nearly ruined the club..?
Do you think we should just change a manager every time we don’t win the league..? (don’t tell me, you want a billionnaire sugar daddy and maurinho in charge of us..ffs)
Most of the players seem to get on with Rodgers and he has definately been a breath of fresh air for the academy and youth set up so how is your mind telling you otherwise..?
You are clueless and to bring Borini into your post absolutely proves how clueless you are.

        • Luger says:

          Nonsense, a complete fantasy.

        • liverbaby says:

          Yes you are delusional H

        • Kenny says:

This league is an appalling standard, look at Man City for example. It seems however you are happy finishing below rubbish like Everton, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea. He had 6 days to prepare for the Southampton game which was quite obviously going to be a physical match and yet he plays Allen in the centre of midfield instead of the likes of Henderson and Shelvey.

It is time to get Phil Thompson in as manager. He would know how to organize a team from the defence up to the attack and he would get rid of the two physically weakest centrebacks in the League ie Agger and Skrtel.

How many more leagues do you want to see United winning before we start to try and catch up?

        • H says:

          you are delusional liverbaby

      • stevieG says:

        Well said nkem

  • H says:

The biggest problem at LFC is the clueless supporters such as the two above.

Absolutely clueless about where the club has been for the last few years and absolutely clueless when talking about getting a new coach in.

I suspect they do not go the matches – and thank god for that. The internet and whoppers such as these are ruining the game for good.

    • Luger says:

How many managers spend 50m net and are worse off as a team and actually weaken the squad? U want to talk about fans well what about the fans who made the long trek to Southampton, probably the longest away trip in the season only to be served up a gutless amateurish display? Pathetic.

      • H says:

Ahh the old money spent routine.

We had supporters doing this all the way through Rafa’s time at Anfield. We had supporters doing it to Kenny as well.

Like as supporters we have got a clue about the actual finances / wage bills / ownership constraints – get a grip.

Yeah it hurts when you go away and get a bad performance, I’ve been there loads of times, ive been there several times this season – aqnd the last – and the one before etc etc. That’s what happens.!! Its called being a supporter. Most of the time now people seem to just be in a constant state of misery and evrytime a result doesn’t go our way – sack the manager – pathetic.
Rafa only got us top four before Spurs spent a shed load and City got there cash injection – and people expect us to win EVERY match – or sack the manger.

    • stevieG says:

No .it’s uneducated idiotic fans like you that are holding this club back.

Fools like you have low expectations , and have contributed to lower standards

I go to most games. I am scouse. Are u ?

This club is about Winning and having high standards. People like u and that dope we call a manager are a disgrace

      • H says:

Uneducated and holding the club back.? Whatever, you womble.
Its nothing to do with low expectations, we havent been able to compete since the start of Sky football.!! Wake up lad.
If your’e such a good scouse match going supporter then you’ll have been on the SOS marches when the club was proper fukked, you’ll also have been the away days when the lads are getting behind the manager becasuse they can see he has to be given time, you’ll have been to Oldham which was gutting, but one of the best atmospheres in ages when we scored, Wigan the same – yous all just enjoy moaning..
The club is about winning – we won a cup last season and our club legend got the boot..!!! Our standards were dragged through the mud by H&G and Roy.. This club, right now, is about being united and getting some consistency, not calling for managers head evrytime things don’t go our way. its smalltime – its chelsea and its pathetic.

        • kev says:

The more you waffle .the more stupid you sound.

        • kev says:

How many trophies have Chelsea won in last 7 years ?

        • H says:

How many trophies have Chelsea won in last 7 years ?

So what..? What is your answer..? Keep changing the manager until we win a trophy..? We need a Russion oil barron in charge before we do that.

        • Kenny says:

Winning rubbish like the league cup is worthless. The only trophies that matter are the Premier League and the Champions League.

Rodgers is out of his depth clearly and should be dispensed with this week. It is pointless waiting until the summer. It is time to get Phil Thompson in now, he would jump at the chance.

  • peter says:

I just hope Mr BR will realise that some of our midfielders are tied and need rest but what was the offence of jonjo and Suso pls give them playing time

  • bj says:

@ H, I really don’t support insulting our manager but u too should be careful wat u say. We are all entitle to our own opinion, so y insult them for voicein out their frustration. Have u ever heard of wat is called constructive criticism? If yes then u should understand n never should have insulted dis fans n if not, then be a little more patient cos I trust ur teacher to explain to u so next time u behave urself. Abt coming to field to watch match, if I’ve never been to anfield, does it make me a small fan morron?

  • Ian says:

h I am in total agreement. Although I am from the area and go to a number of games I do not think this is totally important for me to be able to voice my opinion. I just wonder what a lot of these proper ‘scouse to the core me!’ Lads are on about sometimes when they think its just a case of getting a new manager every few months. Fair enough Rodgers makes mistakes and did the other night. Also, he wasn’t my first choice either. But please get a grip because its people like these who embarrass us as a club and give people the chance to say we are living in the past …we are not able to go and get the top top managers / players at the moment but must take educated gambles instead so a reality check is in order.
Who would you have as manager then?
    Who would you buy?
For all these points I can see a bit of steady progress which we must at least get behind for another 12 months.
…last thing, why mention being ‘scouse’ lots of lfc heroes weren’t. I just think having an education helps sometimes!

  • yenoor says:

I can’t believe there are still some buffoons on here defending Rodgers ! Manu supporters perhaps ??

The man is dragging our club down to his own mediocre standards . As Liverpool fans we should not accept second best , or in Rodgers case 8th or 9 th best

  • Bailey says:

Rogers is a disgrace .get him OUT !!!!

  • simon says:

Once again there are a few uneducated dopes on here making excuses for our inadequate useless manager.

I suppose they all wanted Hodgson given much more time too?

I suppose they all thought Hodgson was doing a fine job too !

  • bob says:

if only rodgers would see what we see
    – a championship manager who is way out of his depth
    – a fool who doesnt have a clue how to organise a defence
    – a bullsh!tting waffler
    – a self absorbed egotistical big head
    – a man who imagines joe allen is a footballer , instead of what he should be – a ball boy
    – a loser who has never won anything
    – a loser who was sacked by reading

take a look in the mirror brendan . a good manager – you are NOT

  • Howie says:

NEVER has the phrase “out of his depth ” been more appropriate that to describe Rodgers tenure at Liverpool.

  • Suarez says:

Rodgers has had time and money
Rodgers has failed. Simply not q good manager

  • Erin says:

Championship manager who wa sacked at reading. Describes Jo Allen as the welsh xavi! You just couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried. I will never understand how he got the job. He should be a career consultant or in Pr. sadly, he is our manager . It will be a long season next one. Don’t see him getting sacked. First envelope, blame the previous one, second, make promises , third, prepare 3 envelopes

  • Rajiv Singh says:

It is with great interest that I religiously read everything about my beloved LFC from a sunny South Africa everyday. I try to be as open-minded about all the comments as I can possibly be. Trust me when I say that I want what ALL us long-suffering LFC fans want – our beloved team to return to the top…..and that time is nigh!

As much as I am disappointed with the result on Sat (who wouldn’t be!!), we need to be aware of some glaringly obvious facts. Yes, BR was to blame for starting with that formation (& that team). However, the players have to take responsibility for their player & truth be told, I cringe every time a team attacks against us, because our defence is so poor – and this goes back a few seasons. Yes, the likes of JC (true legend that he is), have put in good shifts over the years, but as a defensive unit, we have always lacked a bit of steel, class, pace and good old-fashioned balls. Add to that Pepe’s obvious decline (Im sure u have all heard that he is now starring in a movie – so much for his commitment), and one can easily see why we concede so easily. Our entire defence is downright shoddy. Our midfield on Saturday was not helped by an injured & out of form Joe Allen (& ultimately BR is the one who selects the starting 11), but Joe Allen is a decent player. He is however, one of many who’s form has been on the decline. However, saying that he, Borini, and BR an others are not good enough is pure bull. Most fans are saying that we were lucky to beat Spurs as they made mistakes. What utter crap!! If no team ever made mistakes, no goals would be scored!!! We have made many mistakes this season – does that mean that in those games our opponents were just lucky to beat us? Fact is, we have played better football this season, and while we have been lucky with injuries, these are the ingredients that go into making an entire football season – and i’m not talking Playstation season!!!
At the end of it all, I am not saying that we should display blind faith & I am also not saying that we should not encourage good debate on all LFC issues, but I strongly urge us all to stand behind our team – irrespective of who walks out on the pitch. Having played sport for many years – both individual & team sport – I can say that having fantastic support works wonders for morale.
To those who suggest sacking BR, please stop living in the past & rather come up with suggestions of replacements (& “anyone” is not available -= he has retired!!!).

    Long live LFC – YNWA!!!!

    • simon says:

Sorry but that is a load of nonsense and excuses. To even suggest that Allen is a decent player shows a lack of knowledge.

Lots of people have suggested many many names , with much more experience and proven quality than Rodgers. I’m not going to repeat them again but suffice to say – any of them would be better than rodgers

    • simon says:

One more thing . It IS blind faith because Rodgers has no track record of success and therefore no reason to believe he is a decent manager.

    • Ian says:

      Decent comment Rajiv.
Also just noticed Alan’s below too, u both seem like level headed people.
…with all due respect Simon, what would you do and what players & manager would you like to see. I’d also like to see what prices we would get them for too?
I’m old enough to realise that having Rodgers is a gamble of sorts and if you see something there in a young manager you have to stick with them as they are certain to make mistakes.
You also give them time whilst analysing if the mistakes are becoming less frequent and also outweighed by the pluses.
As mentioned in an earlier post if we think we are now the still the most attractive and best team around we are living in the past unfortunately.
Iv been right across Asia in the last few months and I now see more chelski shirts which is quite scary really so sticking together is what it’s all about.
Optimism and togetherness is what I say ..not blind faith, that’s just insulting!

      • Dennis says:

If you put your trust in a man who has done nothing , won nothing , got sacked by reading after 6 months , spends all our summer transfer money on total rubbish ,shows ridiculous naive tactics in game. If you put your trust in that …then sir you are mad

        • Dennis says:

Ps. Rodgers is losing the club massive amounts of money….so we don’t have time to be patient

        • Ian says:

Fair enough Dennis with your opinion (which I won’t discredit.)
Although mine is not concrete in the fact of blind faith as I do see Rodgers faults ..just hope he will learn from mistakes. I will reserve judgement till the end of the season, maybe slightly longer.
I was a massive Rafa fan but conceded that the time was right for him to go too (circumstances went against him)
I would however like to see the answers to the 2 questions from my previous post answered as I do think we have fallen down the food chain in recent years.

      • simon says:

        Ian
Again it has been answered by many, on many different articles….but there are many top managers ..some available , some not …who would take ourclub forward

Fact is a good manager signs good players ,has good tactics and gets results….Rodgers

        • simon says:

          doesn’t do any of them.

          You want names ? Fine.
I believe all of below could be convinced to be our manager
          1. Mourinho 2. Rafa 3. Hiddink 4. Van gaal. 5.laudrup. 6. Hyypia 7. Ancelotti

I could name many many more possibles….fact is just about any proven manager would do better than Rodgers

…as for players comin in…irrelevant question..depends on the manager and what players he wants

  • Alan-T says:

simon – you are the one on here who seems to be coming out with the most nonsense.

Rajiv posts somthing well thought out and all you keep going on about is nonsense and dopes, whilst also saying that lots of managers names have been suggested “any of which would be better than rodgers” – nonsensical indeed.

Well said rajiv. Mistakes wil be made along the way and the league has been a bit all over the place this season. Hopefully with the right backing in the summer and some decent signings BR wil continue to take the club forward. Any talk of another manager is utter madness and just shows the mentality of todays supporters.

    YNWA

    • Dennis says:

I’m sorry. Your posts are uneducated nonsense. You clearly don’t understand football , and are relying on blind faith to guide you

It’s astonishing the lack of intelligence in your comments. Im presuming that like rajiv you are just a youth

    • Dennis says:

I’m sorry. Your posts show a uneducated and naive point of view.your lack of understanding about football is embarrassing

I’m presuming that you are a kid too ?

      • Alan-T says:

My posts don’t even begin to display how much understanding I have, besides, who are you to judge.? All you have done is call people mad and uneducated without actually putting any reasonable thoughts down yourself.

Should I not presume you are the kid.?

I find it unreasonable not to be giving rodgers enough time to be able to prove himself as an up and coming, progressive manager. He has not been here long at all, the season isn’t even over and supporters think it’s ok to slash the guy off every time we lose a game. We haven’t been championship contenders now for a few seasons – since Rafa – and a lot of supporters let him down with their lack of support. The ground emptied when we played chelsea in his last match.
We all want success – I just believe we will get that by sticking together and building through stability – not calling for our managers head every time things don’t go our way.

        • Alan-T says:

Ps. Just seen you on another thread calling the manager a cabbage. Think I’ll leave it there, kid.

        • Dennis says:

Firstly I don’t call for the managers head every time things don’t go our way.I have wanted him gone since day 1 – he is not good enough for our club ,ad has proved it in the time he has had.

think you will find its the young kids who are defending Rodgers .

        • Dennis says:

I’m 45 . Most of the older heads don’t fall for Rodgers bull, the younger are more naive.
Calling the manager a cabbage is simply a way of getting my point across quickly in a slslightly humorous way

  • Alan-T says:

I agree – most of the older heads are suspicious, they defiantely want to see things happen on the pitch instead of just talk.
Whoever replaced Kenny was going to have it tough – decent CV or not. I’m prepared to give BR time to see what he can achieve and its just gets to me when so many of our own are quick to jump on our own managers back. Who need enemies…

    • Dennis says:

Way I see it…Rodgers is not good enough. He will fail…nearly all his actions so far have confirmed this for me

Liverpool has lots going for it right now
      – One of world’s best players
      – Fantastic fantastic young players coming through
      – Still other top players like Stevie after reina etc

We need a good manager now. We sack Rodgers now or we waste 2 more seasons and sack him then…result is same , but we wont have Suarez or Gerrard then

      • Alan-T says:

But for such a young guy, without experience at top level, he has us 7th in the league with 9 matches to play. What is failure.? if we all agree that winning the league is our ultimate goal – then winning the league is pretty much directly linked to money spent – so have we got a chance of doing that..?

Seems to me that our best bet is to look after our best player (he seems to be doing that – Suarez was a nightmare last season and caused Kenny all sorts of issues).

Give the young players match time – he does that but then gets slagged off when it goes wrong. The team that played Oldham should have been good enough for example.

Who knows what is happening with Reina – his dad seems to think he wants to leave, but he is still producing top performances. Stevie seems at ease and looks to be getting on with the gaffa.?

I think we need a manager who is right up to speed with the modern game, not afraid to “try” different things. If we brough in someone with a top CV and he “failed” after 6 months, what then..? Roll in the next guy and his vision..?

I guess we won’t agree and I don’t care that people accuse my like of having blind faith – a lot of support is about faith, hope, belief, or used to be, before the internet took over with its stats about every little detail..

        • Dennis says:

‘he has us 7th in the league with 9 games to go’
          That says it all

1 point better than west brom and out of all cups in February . With Damn all injuries and the best player in the league on form.

Even Everton fans would be disgusted with that

  • Alan-T says:

We’re becoming as bitter as that shower.
