It all went wrong for LFC when Rafa, and our patience, left

Rafa Benitez LiverpoolWE often talk of how patient Liverpool fans have been. We’ve all been patiently waiting for over 20 years to win the title.

A child looking at his birthday gift and not opening the box for a few hours is more patient than us. The child has the option of opening the box early – we’ve never had the option of opening the box early; we haven’t forgone winning the league earlier for later. We’ve not had a choice.

We were seen as patient for giving managers time. Now we seem to be keen to hire and fire.

It all went wrong when Rafa left.

Rafa, in my opinion, was forced out by the owners. Hodgson unfortunately came and luckily left. King Kenny was hired and sacked in the same shameless way Sir Bobby Robson was treated by Newcastle United – I always thought we were better than that. Now Rodgers is at the helm and so many fans with access to the internet are out for his blood, they want him gone. Where is the patience? We can’t keep sacking men one year into 3-5 year plans.

Players come and go without enough time to show their true worth. This hire and fire attitude to players comes with financial foolishness as our managers have tried to wheel deal.

This money-wasting, player-messing-around started on Rafa’s watch. Was Alberto Aquilani given enough time? Robbie Keane? Crouch?

Were we patient with Carroll? From the day Rodgers came in we heard of Carroll being available for loan! Loaning a £35m assets? Who does that? Madrid? Barcelona? Man Utd? No one! Except us.

Rodgers should have done what’s known as ‘coaching’ and coached the best out of Andy. An impact substitute, a plan B or substitute striker for half a season would have been sensible uses for Carroll…but then again, where’s the patience? Yet Rodgers wants patience from us when it comes to his job. They both deserve time and patience in my opinion.

It wasn’t too long ago that Henderson and Downing where the prime targets for the boo boys. Many internet-friendly fans were overly keen to give them the old elbow. Brendon Rodgers himself tried to off load them, offering them to other clubs sometimes with cash for second rate players. Henderson plus cash for Dempsey – thank god we didn’t get that poor deal done!

Now Henderson and Downing are being regarding in a much better light as they have improved. That’s not patience that’s just the determination of the players themselves. If I were under the same pressure of being sacked I’d struggle at work, wouldn’t you? What happened to giving players support?

Let’s talk of the present. I read comments by fans asking for Jonjo Shelvey, Fabio Borini and Oussama Assaidi to be sold and moved on. All are young and neither (especially Assaidi) have had much time on the pitch. What happened to allowing players to develop out of the lime light? At the financial outlay for these players (including Borini) I think we can afford them time. Can’t Rodgers coach and improve them?

Young players are expected to deliver immediately rather than grow as people and players in Liverpool FC. Where is our loyalty to these young men?

It’s different for ‘local’ home grown players such as Jay Spearing who was allowed all the time in the world. In all fairness I do think Spearing’s time has come. Carragher wasn’t always the main man he is now. Players were brought to challenge for the same positions he wanted to play and he always adapted and improved.

All this impatience, buying and selling while managers and players are still settling in seems highly counterproductive. Maybe some real patience will lead us to our mutual goal that much quicker; is it a case of a stitch in time saves nine? Are we all now demonstrating the fury of a patient man? Either way I still believe (my last proverb) everything comes to him who waits.

An armchair fan who loves the stadium experience but likes the bread and butter of replays, moronic pundits, a drink in a pub atmosphere. LFC is my religion.

Common sense is missing from football but the situation is always complicated so I endeavour to give opinion and encourage discussion and thought about LFC.

the PLAYERS ran out of patience as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t00D23R63ig that video says it all.

    • stevieG says:

Yeah right. The players really ran out of patience challenging for league and being in champions league latter stages every year !!!!!!

I’m sure they would much rather be stuck in mid table with no cups to play for , like rodgers has them now

      Dope !

  • Emma says:

u must b crazy….. who wants Rogers gone, boy has done a good job wit limited resources

  • Lar Larkin says:

Unfortunately pseudo LFC web-sites such as Liverpool-Kop, run by Rick Parry’s brother Jamie Kan-lad, brainwashed many LFC followers and still continue to today. LFC were the No. 1 rated club in Europe in 2009 now we are nomarks. Of course Rafa made mistakes but he was on the brink of making us ‘great’ again but was let down by Staedler and Waldorff and Snake Purslow….all history now. Now’s the time to back Rodgers and get behind the lads next season …isn’t that the definition of the word ‘supporter’? YNWA

  • Erin says:

Yes it did go wrong. And both fans and Rafa reached the tipping point.
Downing improved? Sure on being useless.
Allen and asaidi? The only way is up. Doesn’t make the liv players.

  • Jon c says:

Rafa started well and built a very good solid team. He messed up though. BIG TIME.
Get me Gareth Barry. The beginning of the end. Why? Why did he not say get me another striker who can score so that when Fernando is tired or injured. I can use him. He had at his disposal after Torres. Kuyt, Veronin,Ngog. Hardly gonna get you the goals is it? In midfield he had Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, Lucas, Damien Plessis could play and even Beniyoun. Yet he wanted Gareth Barry. Maybe he could explain that to you all. But the rot started with ‘Get me Gareth Barry’.

  • Ray says:

Please manager you need time to adjust, therefore you need to give the youngsters the same do not sell them. Remember a player named THOMAS INCE .

  • Pat says:

Rafa won the champ league with Houliers team. I do agree he bought some great players but he also bought some of the worst players to come to Anfield. His treatment of Alonso was his downfall and subbing Torres at Birmingham when we were looking for a goal cost him the dressing room.

  • Harvey says:

Now, isn’t this is a change? Where are all the “RODGERS OUT” bandwagon? Aaaah…hiding in the attic i see!

    • Vikas Dhingra says:

Yes! Where are they? Smiling n not being big enough to say they may have changed their minds. I’m still to be convinced by BR but think another season is the least he’s earned.

      • Mark Henry says:

Brendan Rogers out, this to little to late & worst manager that has managed this club in 20 years.

      • David Tobin says:

Vikas kop on. Do you really believe 1 good win can make up for a horrible embarrassing season ?

        No

Rodgers is useless and will never succeed at football management

    • David Tobin says:

      Right here. Nothing has changed

Rodgers is totally out of his depth

      Sack the fool now please

  • Ted says:

Houllier was actually a more successful manager than Benitez so why isn’t there a ‘bring back Houllier’ obsession? Benitez has been vastly over-hyped, he knew how to manipulate the fans into his agenda. The truth is he left us in 7th place and spent money like a drunken sailor. Aqualani anyone? 20m of a crocked lazy coward.

  • Precious Ndubuisi Chima says:

Pls BR shuld be allowed to develop those young boys, Luke at Thomas Inch, we sold him because of our inpatient now he has proven himself nd we now go for him, see hw much he is going to cos us if atall we can get him back, that shuld be a lesson to us LFC

  • joe says:

Carroll isnt good enough, he’s hardly set the word on the fire at west ham! and as for rodgers he’s doing a good job, this is the best football iv seen us play in a long time, i’ve enjoyed going the game this year and if it wasn’t for the poor start due to the changes that were brought in then i think we would be on a lot more points.

  • Abraham says:

Never seen so much ignorants commenting on this blog till today. Have you seen what Barry has accomplished since get me barry? Have you seen what the said lazy aquillani is doing with Forentina? What abt Rafa’s man mgt of a mafia group at Chelsea – the same mafia that got Ancelloti , Scolari, AVB fired? Our very own Coutinho was given a chance by Rafa. Isn’t our core players now better than the core that Rafa inherited? So to win with Houillier’s team takes a genius. Then after almost £50m spent same as Spurs, how can you say limited funds?

  • Phil says:

Rafa is a L.F C. legend and should never have been sacked, that’s why he had the kop singing his name as a Chelsea manager , FSG missed the opportunity to bring him home when they appointed BR but onwards and upwards let’s get behind BR.

  • Adams says:

I go with you Phil. You’re right

  • Pnderito says:

Too much praise to Brendan for the hefty win. Next is everton and all youl come crying how brendan is stupit. Time will tell

  • Mark Henry says:

Watch the attitude when we play Everton & get lashed, it could have been 10 nil I’m still not convinced. Brendan Rogers OUT!.

  • David Tobin says:

Rodgers is useless . Totally inept and out of his depth

Even if we beat Everton 6-0 it still wouldn’t make up fir the worst season in over 50 years

  • stevieG says:

Deluded irrational article.only a cabbage would think the likes of assaidi and borini aren’t rubbish
And as for rodgers ? The guy is a terrible manager – tactically naive and can’t organize a defense . Get rid

  • liverbaby says:

With the top players at his disposal – BR will always win the odd game , but he is not good enough for LFC

He will attract no top players , only average Swansea ones
He has a win percentage of 39% , which is disgraceful

  • bob says:

rodgers has done an awful job. dont know how anyone can defend him

after this , he will never get a job at a top club again
