Liverpool edge closer to £10 million midfielder

Liverpool targetThe Independent understands that Liverpool are edging closer to concluding a £10 million deal for Derby County midfielder Will Hughes, though the midfielder would remain at the Championship side for the remainder of the season.

The 18 year old, an England U-21 international, has been touted for a while as one of the most promising young talents in English football.

He made his Championship debut for Derby at the tender age of 16, but that did not faze him as he notched up a fantastic 35 league games last season.

Liverpool’s chief scout, Barry Hunter, has been scrutinising Hughes for 6 months. Though it is not just Liverpool who are interested; Hughes’ performances have peaked the interest of fellow Premiership big names such as Manchester City and Arsenal.

But it appears Liverpool are the ones who are prepared to pay such a fee and leave the teenager to hone his craft at Derby for one more season.

Hughes did nothing to hinder his international record whilst playing for England U-21s against Scotland last week, and is one of the scarce talents the FA hope will be able to shine at senior international level.

Despite his age, Hughes has already had sufficient first team experience under his belt, a factor towards his price, though despite the seemingly extortionate price the Reds are aware that the fee will only increase in the coming months.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

    • Joe says:

Like Man United when the signed Zaha? Or Spurs nearly signing Ince? How about the Goonies signing Oxlade-Chamberlain? Pull your head out of your arse, you clueless c@nt.

We need men with experience who can bring us to the next level. Not schoolboys who are good to play for the U21. You twit . BPL is a different ballgame altogether.

      • FSG Out says:

Those players are over-rated over-priced garbage. Why do we need to follow suit? You mug.

It is patently obvious that you have not watched Will Hughes, I have been watching football since 1946 and he is one of the most gifted players I have had the privilege to watch, unfortunately he has always been a Liverpoool fan and it is probable that that is where he will end up.

      I hope that DCFC accept nothing less than £10million + add-ons + a season’s loan back.

Makes me laugh how Liverpool fans (probably the most deluded fans in the world) are slating Will Hughes and saying he’s not good enough without seeing him play. As a Derby season ticket holder I can tell you that he is too good to play for Liverpool, he’d be better off signing for a club who play Champions’ League football

      • allaboutanfield says:

I’ve see the clips on Will Hughes , all I have to say even our Jordan Ibe is a much better player than him.

      • FSG Out says:

Yeah right, so why havent other clubs come in for him with big bids? Trying to dress him up as a top talent so you can get more money eh?! Weve seen it all before.

  • ray says:

This boy is a wonderful talent – he is READY NOW. If Chelsea sign Willian we should go for MATA

  • vicky says:

FSG and BR are jokers…they are toying with LFC and soiling its image by always enaging on petty players…

  • Sadiq says:

Rogers you are doing great work but pls don’t just depend on teenage players. Get some big names atleast two.Ray i agree with you let lfc go for mata cause it seems mata is not part of jose’s plan or better still, try everything posible to land ericksen from ajax cause mata might be to xpencive compare to ericksen..
Lfc is very good are very good in targeting good players but not doing well in signing them rathere missin them to other clubs. Are we becomming Arsenal?
Pls BR, get a vibrant, ambitious, agressive defencive mildfilder as backup for lucas. Ywnwa.
