RodgersTHE Liverpool Daily Post has reported that Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, has outlined financial reasons as the main cause of Brazilian winger Willian’s snub.

The manager has insisted that the club have to start spending bigger in order to keep up with other potential Champions League contenders this season, having finished in 7th in the Premiership last term.

Liverpool were favourites to sign the 25 year old Willian a mere week ago, though a deal could not be concluded and Willian then went for a medical at Spurs, though he has now taken another dramatic u-turn and looks set to sign for Chelsea.

Speaking about missing out on the Brazilian, and ask whether he believed it was for footballing reasons, Rodgers said:

“No, it wasn’t a football one and I don’t really want to go into it…that’s for us as a club really. The bottom line is he hasn’t come here for whatever reason and we move on.

“We identify the targets and then try and get the deal done financially. That’s how it was. The club has pushed financially as hard as they felt they could but it wasn’t to be. It’s disappointing because this was a player who would have been perfect for us.”

Rodgers went turned his focus onto Liverpool’s finances, and insisted that the Reds would have to spend heavily in order to maintain top four contention:

“I think the owners will spend the money, they are ambitious for the club to progress and get into the Champions League places, and we also know in order to not get left behind you have to spend money.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

He ‘thinks’ the owners will spend money.id prefer it if they did spend money.i get the impression that BRs got his teeth well and truly buried in his tongue where the Americans are concerned. Time to spend some of that new tv and sponsorship money FSG,the recruitment team are identifying targets so put your hands in your pockets and quickly realise that without quality we get left behind.

I think Willian is interested in Champions League . When he went to Spurs he realized they aren’t in Champions League .He made a U turn and went over to Chelsea.

    • Ossie says:

Lol, he had to go and find that out, did he? I’m not a professional football and don’t have an agent and I already know this great secret that spurs aren’t in the champion league. Money my friend is the factor, money.

villa match justify the need to spend the cash on quality players. We were lucky to overcame Astonvilla this evening….imagine my captain defending due to pressure from villa team…sucks

  • Barnetto says:

Lets not pin all our hopes on young Coutinho. It’s a team. Hopefully we can get someone of quality in over the next 10 days as we are short on real match winners. Good sides have four or five of them. We have two and a half at best.

  • Martin says:

No sh it Brendan . How did he figure that one out !!!

  • Gerrard79 says:

@martin … Give br a break … He’s identified 2-3 top players that he wanted . The owners and Ian Ayer let him down ! Why don’t you try support our current team like a real fan or maybe you don’t genuinely know how to as your negative comments at our coach seem like those of a plastic fan .

Kop on . Rodgers being a fsg ar5e licker is part of the problem too. If the guy told the truth once in a while instead of covering up for them , then maybe fans might have more time for him

Rodgers is doing himself no favours

  • Maruf says:

Liverpool don’t have replayment for player, so they need to spent, because they need a more playmaker.

  • EZEKIEL KPAREVFA says:

Stupid cowboys! Brendan, do your best and leave the rest. God wil see us through.

  • RONY says:

I think eriksen is the best attacking midfielder, so BR ask your boss to pay whatever it costs if they wanna see us in CL 4 he is real quality.

  • Qamarudeen says:

I’ll like 2 see BR sign the likes of Erickson & Ilori that’s the void he can fill that will pave way 4 success @anfield 4 now

  • stevie says:

Can’t understand why we wanted will.I.an anyway. Unleash sterling and ibe with their pace. Defenders can’t deal with pace. Look forward to seeing those two more this season

  • BIDIKA KITILA says:

The owner themselves, who delibretily kill the club as well demoralize fans. Why not they financed the club. What 20m for great club? Stupid owner! Financial problem shortens Rogders hand & prologs his ambiouns.

Gud morning all u Liverpool fans why are you hitting on BR n owners look at the premier league table played 2 won 2 we are joint top with Chelsea plz don’t slag our team off villa is a god team they beat arsenal should have got a draw against Chelsea but was robbed by the ref
And we beat them so let’s all sing the praises of BR n team ynwa

  • Raam says:

Its not just Willian, but most so called stars are in fact chasing a fat paycheque. The CL club reason is just an excuse.

    • Alex says:

It’s not just the money . Liverpool have no ambition right now. We wont buy the top players and are Destined for a future of not challenging at the top . So why would any ambitious player want to join ?
Even our best player wants to leave

  • Raam says:

BR has started to show his frustration towards FSG for not back him up financialy. At last he is showing some ambition. Come on BR, so far the results are good. The score is the one that needs to be added. Some time even goal difference counts at the end of the season.
