A lesson to learn from the Suarez situation

Melwood LFCWITHOUT any doubt the story of the summer transfer window has been Luis Suarez’s expression of his desire to leave Liverpool FC.

In the immediate aftermath of the Branislav Ivanovic incident there were a small section of the Liverpool fans that immediately called out for the club to sell its best player citing a number of reasons as to why he must be sold.

A few days after the incident when Suarez was handed a ten match ban a significant majority of the Anfield faithful sympathised with him, as they viewed the ban to be a bit too harsh.

Fast forward three months later and opinion on Merseyside has shifted significantly with the majority of the fans saying Suarez must be sold so that the club can move on quickly.

There have been a lot of developments in the three months between the biting incident versus Chelsea on the 21st of April and today.

First was Suarez’s declaration that he would find it hard to turn down Spanish giants Real Madrid citing the unfair treatment he gets from the British media as the main reason as to why he want to leave Merseyside. Suarez openly flirted with Madrid but, the Spanish side did not submit a bid for the Uruguayan. At that stage the majority of the fans still sympathised with him despite him openly publicly expressing his desire to join Madrid, as they view the media as being a bit overly critical of Suarez.

Then came the moment when Arsenal submitted a formal bid for Suarez, no one thought that the Uruguay international will be interested in moving to another English club as he wanted to escape from the British press. Suarez immediately expressed his desire to join the Gunners much to the dismay of the Liverpool fans.

The fans chanted Luis’ name in the games vs Melbourne Victory, Thailand’s national team and Olympiakos but the Uruguayan did not show any appreciation, he also was the only member of the first team not to attend captain Steven Gerrard’s testimonial dinner, raising a few eyebrows.

As if this was not enough, Suarez used the same British media he despised before to try and push for a move to Arsenal claiming that there is an amendment to his contract that allows him to leave for a side playing in the UEFA Champions League. Suarez personally approached the Guardian for the interview and this did not go down well with the fans and the management, coach Brendan Rodgers has also had enough. The interview clearly infuriated the coach among the things that Rodgers said was “there has been a total disrespect of the club – a club that has given him everything”.

The club has rightly given Suarez everything as they would have given any other player but, maybe they have given him too much.

Club legend John Barnes somewhat foretold what lay ahead in the aftermath of Suarez being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra:

“If he believes it’s all about him then I believe we could have a situation that we saw with Torres”.

The club risked its reputation for one individual by supporting him during the period after the Evra incident, even going to the extent of warming up in t-shirts showing support for the Uruguayan, this was one of the reasons why Kenny Dalglish lost his job.

From that period Suarez may have seen himself as the man who makes Anfield tick. Rodgers has been more strict this time around and has even instructed Suarez to train alone. Unless a miracle happens Luis Suarez will not be wearing the Liverpool FC jersey next season and the club has learned the hard way that pampering a playing does not directly translate to loyalty.

All the attention during pre-season has shifted to one player which is by no means good and the club should do its best to make sure that such a thing does not happen in the future.

I agree LFC were too supportive of Suarez during the Evra incident and are being too harsh now. They have given too may contradictory reasons why he must stay and TBH it just smacks of desperation. LFC often say no player is bigger than the team, but their actions show that even this tenant of Anfield history is clearly not being upheld by the current owners. A sad day for a great British club 🙁

  • PanchoTaffy says:

It is clear that LFC made a huge mistake by not punishing their player when he was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra. By supporting him as they did, they made it clear that even though he was guilty, he was right to abuse Evra. The fans themselves then took the opportunity to abuse Evra. It was clear to fans of other teams that Suarez was a timebomb waiting to go off. He has a history of cheating, assaulting and being petulant. It was only a matter of time before he threw his toys out of the pram and did the same things all over again. Now he has singled handedly turned LFC into the laughing stock of British football. The manager must wish he would be sold so he could get some control back, unfortunately the board are undermining this by refusing to sell this animal.

You can do one too troll.

    • guest says:

Lol, what a moron you really are, People like you are not worth a dime, you have no opinion of your own and just parrott the corrupt media, How many times did the drunkard fergie defend his players, despite them Bed hopping behind their pregnant wifes back, doing granny’s, crippling opposing players on purpose, attacking fans(jumping in the crowd feet first, with children around), get off your high horse and grow a mind of your own, HYPOCRITE.

    • guest says:

Are you a retard or something? I am sorry but people like you have no mind of your own, you are parroting what the media implied and have completely ignored the facts just to suit your nasty little Anti-Suarez agenda, you call him an animal, so you are obviously whiter than white. Folk like you usually have more to hide than those you try and vilify. Go and examine your own life before you judge Suarez………..Mr Clean.(Hypocrite)

  • Bill says:

Right here we go Mr Demestos the Arsenal troll that has been frequenting every Liverpool site for weeks. Suarez is not going to Arsenal end of story. and the word tenant means someone who pays rent to a landlord, the correct word you ignoramus is tenets. now do one back to your own sites.

  • pino pino says:

a certain stupid uruguayan migrated to lfc to cause us more harm than good lfc always pampering their star strickers owen, torres now suarez

  • Stevie G [Walton) says:

A contract is a two way agreement and Liverpool must stand firm and show Suarez and Arsenal that they will not be bullied. Suarez has proved himself to be extremely greedy as well as talented but he must be shown that not only is he not too big for Liverpool, he is not too big for Liverpool reserves either. 2014 is a world cup year and Liverpool should threaten him with a full season in the reserves if he doesn’t toe the line. Funny how the press hated Suarez but when he wants to leave Liverpool suddenly he has their sympathy, just proves how anti-Liverpool the press are.

  • Marshall says:

Am not critical of lfc suarez treatment just concerned they havnt got contigency plans in the event he does something silly.l would love to c him play in the reserves the whole season coz either way are on the lossing side.its a gamble we should be ready to make.

  • REDDY says:

I don’t want to see Suarez in a LfC kit again to be honest… The guy has no moral values and is a Liar and cheat!! I love LfC and no player should do wat Suarez did and still get to stay, Nomatter how talented he is or how much he is worth!!! The NAME on the BaCk of the jersey is NEVER bigger than the Name on the Front!!! Ones Temporary, the other is Permanant!!! Sell to Madrid cos I don’t think they will pay the 100mil for Bale!? Get Benzema and Modric for him and let’s move on… Or even 40mil+Alonso sounds good. Then just use the 40mil n up thr bid to 25mil fotr costa and sign Erriksen for 15mil.. Life will be better without Suarez, who even b4 we started of an optomistic season killed it for us!

    • guest says:

“No moral values” lol, What a prima donna, your life must be one big melodrama from the moment you awake?, ” no moral values” lmfao, for showing passion within his chosen profession, I just wish we had a few more players like him, instead of drones with little personality and even less skill and presence on the pitch.

  • truth says:

GET RID OF HIM OR THE FANS WILL WALK – SICK OF AMERICANOWNERS WHO DONT HAVE A CLUE BUT IF WE DONT SELL HIM MAKE HIS LIFE HELL AT LFC

    • hanlon says:

r u a fan the fans will not desert liverpool because of a player, Liverpool, manchester united and spurs must be strong about contracts, the player power are pampering to overpaid premadoners. sit them with the stiffs.

    • guest says:

Speak for yourself, most fans will walk if we don’t start signing quality to inspire players like Suarez and if the manager keeps lying to us fans.

  • truth says:

IF SUAREZ DE T GET HIS WAY HE WILL DO A TEVEZ – GO ON STRIKE AND RETURN HOME – ALL OF US KNOW THAT EXCEPT HENRY AND RODGERS -HE WILL BE OF – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

    • hanlon says:

So let him, he cannot play football for anyone L.F.C. hold his registration no world cup next year. sit and watch the world cup

  • Forkah says:

  • Red scorpion says:

Lfc should keep him know matter what , soon as the season starts he’ll be scoring again,

    • hanlon says:

this is all about suarez, no news in the media about Rooney dont they have the same problem , aswll as spurs so its all about liverpool and suarez

  • dubs says:

he can go cos i dont think he’s our best player. We can do very wel without this snake.d main man in verpool wuld always b ‘captain Fantastic’ STEPHEN G

  • hanlon says:

dont let him go because he wants to.Keep him in the reserves for a year withold his registration then sell him. to the highest bidder because arsenal wont be in the champs league in a year.

  • Marshall says:

Luis needs to play in the reserves for the whole year,we’ve made losses already his not the first only advantage being with a little stick we can at least recoup our initial purchase price..this saga is only gettin started coz l believe suarez has a mental problem.

  • hanlon says:

if he wanted champs league football every year stay at ajax

  • Patrick says:

I think Liverpool is in charge of the situation, they have Luiz by the balls if he tries to play tricks they’ll squeeze until he squeaks.

  • hanlon says:

the only way arsenal will be in the champs league is for fenabache getting thrown out.

    • Liam says:

  • Ben says:

Rodgers made the promise. That’s why Luis won’t apologize

Rodgers makes my skin crawl. He is an embarrassment to LFC

    • guest says:

I can’t understand how the fact that our manager can’t even be straight with the fans, seems to have them all clambering to defend him, why?……….This is the only manager I can remember where I have so little trust in what he says. You are right, it is embarrassing, especially how most fans defend him to the hilt.

  • Marshall says:

Even if rodgers made private concessions, luis conduct is disrepectful and provocative…let him play with the u16s

  • godwin says:

best player?..its itching my ears! Captain fantastic is my best player..yes the fang scored some goals as expected, even sturridge scored alot should he be considered our best player?far 4rm it…my club has gone so low that one or two seasons wonda is nw our best player.
